Hit-&-Run, Slurs, Assault, Labeled Untrue

Lying to police was alleged with an arrest yesterday by Laurens City Police. 53-year-old Stanley Smith of unit 10 at 6 Franklin Drive, Laurens was charged with Filing a False Report of a Felony. A warrant states that an investigation by Detective Doug Jones indicates that on Saturday, August 19th, 2017 the defendant unlawfully and intentionally filed a false police report, telling law enforcement that he was the victim of a hit and run accident involving a truck with a rebel flag. He also allegedly further claimed that occupants of that truck yelled racial slurs at him, while also assaulting him. The warrant states there was no evidence to support the claims made by the defendant. It stated that a thorough investigation by the Laurens Police Department and the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) determined the defendant had made untrue statements and falsely reported a felony. The warrant states the offense of filing a false report occurred on East Farley Avenue in Laurens last August 19th.

Stanley Smith was being held overnight, awaiting a bond hearing today on the charge of Filing a False Police Report.
