Local Notes:

CHS… Last Friday night the Clinton Red Devils hosted the Broome Centurions in Region III-AAA action in games that have playoff implications.

  • G: Clinton 47 – Broome 36… The Lady Red Devils took a very contentious 47-36 win over the Lady Centurions in the first game of the night… The Red Devils came out and took a 12-8 lead after the first quarter and then extended it to 26-14 at the half… The Centurions cut the Red Devil lead by 1 in the third quarter outscoring them 8-7 but the two teams battled to a 14-14 tie in the final 8 minutes to insure the Clinton win… DeShanti Watts had a game-high 24 points to lead the Red Devils… Savannah Campbell finished with 7 points, Terriauna Bennett 5, Dana Kinard 4, Kailey Cheeks 3, Ashlyn Abercrombie 2, and Sara Olivia Stephens 2…. The Red Devils improve to 11-11 overall and 5-4 in region play… The win assureds the team of making the playoff and can finish anywhere from 2nd to 4th depending on the outcome or tomorrow’s games region wide…. NOTE… During the fourth quarter of the girls’ game there was an “incident” involving a Clinton and a Broome player… We at WLBG do not condone to such things… However District 56 Superintendent Dr. David O’Shields sent out a press release late Friday night with a note to read and disseminate as needed…. What follows is the text of that release. “Tonight at the Varsity home girls basketball game an altercation occurred during the fourth quarter on the court between a Clinton High player and a Broome player. We do not condone or promote this type of behavior in any of our athletic programs.   The safety of all players and fans is crucial to a positive athletic environment.  Clinton High School will continue to work collaboratively with the Broome High School administration and Clinton Public Safety to resolve this unfortunate incident”… The release then had the names of Maureen Tiller CHS Principal and Nickie Templeton CHS Athletic Director at the bottom.
  • B: Clinton 59 – Broome 48… In the second game, the Clinton boys’ team completed the sweep of the Centurions and avenged an earlier loss to them by taking a 59-48 win… The Red Devils started out a little slow as Broome actually led 17-8 at the end of the first 8 minutes of play… However the Red Devils picked up their offense in the second quarter and by the time the half was over they led 24-23… The Red Devil offense continued to outscore the Centurions in each of the last two quarters and the defense forced the Centurions to commit numerous turnovers thus sealing the win… After the game Coach Eddie Romines stated “We struggled at times offensively in the first half but we played much better offensively in the 2nd half… Also, we played really good defense the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th quarters… It was a great win for us! I’m very proud of this team! I’m so proud of my assistant coaches, Josh Bridges and Dontavius Glenn… They did an excellent job tonight also! It was a “Team” win tonight!”… JD Payne led all scorers with 18 points 12 of which came from behind the 3-point arc… Jahleed Cook finished with 9 points, Vilo Boyd 8, Zay Hurley 8, Ty Priestly 6, Zay Bennett 3, BJ Bluford 3, Ahmarie Bates 2 and Zach Jones 2… The Red Devils are now 7-2 in region play and tied with Newberry for the region lead… The Red Devils will host the Woodruff Wolverines in their final regular season games tomorrow on Senior Night.

LDHS… The Laurens Raider varsity teams traveled to Riverside last Friday night to take on the Riverside Warriors in Region II-AAAAA games.

  • G: Laurens 41 – Riverside 39… In the first game at Riverside the Lady Raiders broke a 7 game losing streak taking a last second 41-39 win… The two teams played about even in the first quarter with the Raiders leading 14-13… By the time the teams reached the half the Warriors led 30-23… The Raiders fell further behind early in the second half but rebounded toward the end of the game to tie the game 39-39 and with about 1.2 seconds left Sandajah Vance hit what would be the game-winning shot… Qua Fortson led the Raiders with 10 points… Alexus Espinosa finished with 8, Jayla Mosley 6, Vance 4, Cali Heisey 4, KB Burnside 3, MK Moore 3, Ashanti Conway 3 and Paula Abrams 1… The Raiders are now 8-13 overall and 2-6 in region play and still have an outside chance at making the playoffs.
  • B: Riverside 49 – Laurens 47… The Laurens Raider boys were not quite able to pull off the last second shot as the girls did and they as the fell to the Warriors by a score of 49-47… The Warriors sprinted out to a 15-7 lead after the first 8 minutes of the game and maintained that margin in the second quarter holding a 25-17 lead at the half… The Raiders cut the Warrior lead to just 3 points by the end of the third quarter outscoring the Warriors 17-13 in the quarter on the strength of 4 three-point goals… The Raiders continued to fight back and just like the girls had an opportunity to tie of win at the end but unlike the girls they could not get the shot to fall… Justin Anderson led all scorers with 18 points 15 of which came on shots behind the three-point arc… Carson Todd finished with 14 points, Dee Foster 7, Connor Dunlap 6 and Ty Foster 2… The Raiders fall to 9-13 overall and 2-6 in region … The Raider host the Hillcrest Rams tomorrow in their final home game of the season where they will be honoring their seniors.
  • NOTE… According to information we received last Thursday, the sub-varsity games with the Rams at Hillcrest will be played tomorrow (Tuesday) instead of today due to a scheduling conflict with the Hillcrest gym

Laurens Academy… The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to Newberry Academy last Friday to take on their arch-rival the Newberry Academy Eagles.

  • G: LA 68 – NA 16… The Crusaders girls’ did what they have done in the majority their games this year and that is jump out to a quick lead and either hold it or add to it as they 25-7 at the end of the first quarter and 46 to 7 at the half and then went on to take a 68-16 win over the Eagles… Taylor Campbell led the Crusaders with a game-high 33 points and Ruthie Moore finished with 22 points… Others scoring for the Crusaders were Jennifer Wu 6 points, Florence Mitchell 5 and Regan Williamson 2… The team is 24-1 on the season and 10-0 in region play.
  • B: NA 45 – LA 38… Unfortunately the news is not as good where the boys are concerned as the Eagles took a 45-38 win over the Crusaders… Where the girls usually start out fast the boys have often started slow and that was the case again last Friday… At the end of the first 8 minutes of play the Eagles led by a score of 11-5 (7 points) and the two teams scored equally the remainder of the game so the final margin was 7 points with the Eagles taking the 45-38 win… Noah Moore led all scorers with 19 points and Joshua Moore was also in double-digits with 12 points… The Crusaders other 7 points were scored by Dawson Foster… The Crusaders fall to 9-14 overall and 5-6 in region play…. The Crusaders finish their regular season tonight as they travel to Wardlaw to makeup varsity games that were postponed in mid-January due to bad weather.
