Sports Report for Thursday, 2-8-2018

Local Notes:

  • Two Sign at Clinton… Yesterday at CHS Haleigh Kuykendall and Kody Varn signed letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers… Haleigh signed to attend Martin Methodist College in Tennessee and her sport is somewhat of a non-tradition sport not part of most high schools offerings and that is bowling… She has been a very active in tournaments throughout the south and has an average of about 210 with her best game a 279… She plans on majoring in Business and minor in Mathematics and hopes to become a financial manager and maybe even bowl professionally and/or in the Olympics. … Kody signed with Newberry College where he will play on the offensive line… He will be majoring in Sports Management and says he would like to become and athletic director one day… Now if you would like to see a short video interview done with each of these student athletes after the signing, click here.

  • Red Devils in Tiebreaking Games Tonight… Both the CHS varsity basketball will travel to Woodruff tonight in a pair of tiebreaking games to determine seedings for the playoffs starting next week… The girls will kick things off at 6:00 pm taking on Chapman to determine which team will finish the region #3 and which will finish #4….. After that game is over, the CHS and Newberry will take to the court to see which of the teams will finish #1 in the region… Obviously the Red Devils would like to have plenty of fan support to cheer them on and they are asking the fans to wear re so as to have a Red Out in the Woodruff gym… Good Luck to the Red Devils.

LDHS… I need to do some catching up with the Laurens Raider sub-varsity teams that traveled up to Hillcrest Tuesday night to take on the Rams.

  • JV-G: Hillcrest 48 – Laurens 21… In the girls’ JV game, the Lady Rams took a 48-21 win over the Lady Raiders… The Raiders hung in there for the first 6 minutes as the Rams only led 6-5 at the end of the first quarter… The Rams outscored the Raiders 17-5 in the second quarter and then went on to take the win… Nydia Anderson was the leading scorer for the Raiders with 8 points and Angel Johnson had 5.
  • 9th Grade Boys: Hillcrest 51 – Laurens 44…  The two teams battled almost evenly in the first half but the Raiders did have an 18-16 lead over the Rams at the end of the first half… The third quarter proved to be the difference in the game as the Rams outscored the Raiders 19-9 to take a 36-27 lead in to the final quarter and that proved to be just too much for the Raiders to come back from as the Rams took a 51-44 win over the Raiders…. Shamare Dendy led the Raiders with 14 points… Others scoring for Laurens were Rashun Kennedy & Sean Miller each with 9 points, Toney Pulley 4, Dontavius Stevenson & JQ Fair 3 each, and Nick Cook 2.
  • JV-B: Laurens 56 – Hillcrest 52… Now the Raiders were able to avoid being swept by the Rams Tuesday night as the JV boys’ team took a 55-52 win over the Rams…. The two teams played a close game for three quarters and the Rams had a narrow 41-39 lead going into the final 6 minutes of the game… The Raiders fought back outscoring the Rams 17-11 in the final quarter to take the win… Laurens had two players scoring in double-digits as Amaija Hill finished with 17 points and Jamir Booker with 13… Rob Gilliam finished with 7 points, Jackson Mahon 6, Dra Copeland 5, Nigil Owens 4 and Kentravious Williams 3…. The Raider sub-varsity teams host the Greenwood Eagles today in the final games of their season.

Middle School Basketball… In the second round of the girls’ portion of the Little River Conference Tournament last night at Hickory Tavern:

  • Mid-Carolina 33 – CMS-W 26… The Lady Wildcats of the CMS-White tem faced off against the Lady Rebels of Mid-Carolina in a game that went back and forth with the Rebels but in the end the rebels prevailed by a score of 33-26… The Wildcats led early only to tail the Rebels 11-9 at the half… The Wildcats fought back to take a 19-16 lead going into the last quarter but could not hold it as the Rebels ran off 6 unanswered points in the 33 seconds of the game to take the win… Alexis McGowan led the Wildcats with 17 points… Naomi Valentine had 3 points while Kamryn Aiken, Asia Boyd and Cuprasia McCauley all had 2 points to round out the scoring for the Wildcats.
  • HT 36 – Southside Christian 14… In the second game at HT, the HT Panthers took a 36-14 win over the Lady Sabers of Southside Christian… The Panthers scored the first 4 points of the game before the Sabers got on the board and when the first quarter was over the Panthers led 8-2 and would never be challenged again as their speed and defense outclassed the Sabers… The Sabers never quit as they scored 7 of the points in an comeback effort that fell well short… Ranyia Jackson led all scorers with 18 points… Others scoring for the Panthers were Kimyah Foggie with 8, May Revis 6 and both Taylor Hiott and Morgan Richard finished with 2 points each… The Panthers and the Rebels will play for the championship at LDHS Monday with the game starting at 6:00 pm.
