Local Notes:

CHS

  • Conteras Signs With USC-Union… Yesterday morning in the auditorium at CHS, senior goalie Tania Conteras signed a letter of intent to continue her education and soccer career next year at USC-Union playing for the Bantams… Tania has been playing soccer for the Red Devils for at least three years even though this is the first year for girls’ varsity soccer at CHS… Two years ago she played goalie for the JV boys’ team and last year for the first year JV girls’ team… This year the program transitioned to a varsity and JV program and she has become a leader on the pitch for the Red Devils… She also very active around CHS and is a member of the ROTC program… At this point in the season the team is 3-2 on the year… She is the first goalie ever signed by USC-Union… To go to a video interview with her after the signing, click here… There are a few photos at its end made yesterday also… Congratulations to Tania!
  • SB: Clinton 12 – Whitmire 5… Last night the Red Devil softball team took a 12-5 win over the Wolverines of Whitmire HS… The Wolverines took an early lead scoring a single run in the top of the first inning but the Red Devils erased that in the bottom of the second inning scoring 4 runs and never trailed again… The Red Devils led 10-1 going into the top of the sixth inning when the Wolverines struck for 4 runs but the Red Devils got 2 of them back in the bottom of the inning and held Whitmire scoreless in the top of the seventh inning to take the 12-5 win… The Red Devils pounded out 15 hits and all but 1 starter had a hit with 5 Red Devils getting 2 hits each… To see who they were, click on the following for the box score and stats:  CHS-SB-3-21-18-Whit…. • SB: Clinton 11 – Newberry 1… Yesterday I told you that on Tuesday the Red Devil softball team had played Newberry on Tuesday night but I did not get the score in time to make yesterday’s sport report… Well I know have those results and I am happy to say that the Red Devils took an 11-1 win over the Bulldogs… The score was tied 1-1 at the end of the first inning and it remained that way until the bottom of the third when the Red Devils plated 3 runs, added 4 more in the fourth and 5 in the fifth to end the game on the 10-run rule… Clinton picked up their 11 runs on 8 hits, 6 Bulldog errors and 3 walks… Hunter Benson and Madison Burton led the Red Devil attack with 2 hits each and one of Benson’s was a double… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: CHS-SB-3-20-18-New … For the games scorecard, click on the following: CHS-SB-3-20-18-New-SC

LDHS & CHS Baseball

  • Laurens 9 – Clinton 6… Last night the Raiders and the Red Devils got together at CHS for the first of their two game series in baseball… The Raiders prevailed by a score of 9-6 but to be honest it was not the prettiest baseball game ever seen as the two teams had only 11 hits and had at least 12 errors between them and much more often than not the errors figured prominently in the other teams scoring… The Raiders had a 6-0 lead (on just 3 hits and smattering of walks and Clinton errors) going into the bottom of the third inning when the Red Devils plated 4 runs to make the score 6-4…They did that on two hits a walk and a Raider error…  The Red Devils continued to fight and take advantage of Raider miscues and scored 2 runs in the fifth inning to tie the game 6-6… The Raiders plated a run in the sixth and two more in the seventh again with help of Red Devil mistakes… After the Red Devils scored their final two runs in the fifth inning they never really threatened again… The Raiders had only 4 hits in the game and they were spread among 4 different Raiders… The Red Devils managed 7 hits and Matt Thomas was the only Red Devil to get more than 1 (he had 2)… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: LDHS-BB-3-21-Clinton… For the games scorecard, click on the following: LDHS-BB-3-21-Clinton-SC… The Red Devils travel to Broome tomorrow for a region contest while the Raiders are at Mauldin tomorrow
