Sports Report for Monday, 4-30-2018

Local Notes:

CHS… The Red Devil softball team was busy over the weekend as the participated in the Class-AAA softball playoffs.

  • Crescent 10 – Clinton 0 (5)… On Friday the Red Devils traveled to Iva to take on last year’s state runner-up the Crescent Tigers… The Tiger pitching was spot-on as 11 Red Devils struck out, none walked and collected only 2 hits in the last inning as the Tigers took a 10-0 win in 5 innings… Dianna Martin and Caroline Birchmore had the 2 hits for the Red Devils… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: CHS-SB-4-27-18-Cres… For the games scorecard, click on the following: CHS-SB-4-27-18-Cres-SC… The loss forced Clinton into the loser’s bracket where they traveled to Camden on Saturday for an elimination game.
  • Clinton 4 – Camden 2… I imagine the ride back from Camden Saturday seemed shorter than the trip down as the Red Devils took a 4-2 win over the Bulldogs… The Red Devil bats which were all but silent woke up on Saturday as they pounded out 10 hits with Hunter Benson and Madilyn Wood getting 2 hits each… The Red Devils plated their first run in the top of the first when Hunter Benson led off with a single and later scored on an RBI single by Madilyn Wood… The Red Devils scored their other 3 runs in the 4th inning when they sent 9 batters to the plate… Dianna Martin, Kamryn Akins, Grayson Taylor, Hunter Benson and Madison Burton all had hits in that inning…  The Bulldogs got their 2 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning but the Red Devils held them scoreless the rest of the way to take the win… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: CHS-SB-4-28-18-Camd… For the games scorecard, click on the following: CHS-SB-4-28-18-Camd-SC… Now the win kept the Redd Devils alive to play another day and that day is today as they travel to Greenwood to take on the Emerald Vikings in another elimination game… First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 pm so make plans to go down and support the team… Go Bid Red!

 

LDHS… The Laurens Raider softball team was also busy this weekend as they opened play in the Class –AAAA playoffs.

  • Nation Ford 4 – Laurens 1…  Last Thursday night the Raiders traveled to Nation Ford to take on the Falcons in their opening playoff game… The Raiders scored a single run in the top of the 2nd inning when Jillian Sword scored on an RBI single by Cassie Plaia… The game was halted in the bottom of the second inning as rain caused the infield to become unplayable… The game resumed on Friday night and the Falcons tied the game in the 4th inning and then scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning and held the Raiders scoreless to take the 4-1 win… Six Raider errors in the game aided the Falcons… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: LDHS-SB-4-27-18-N-F… For the games scorecard, click on the following: LDHS-SB-4-27-18-N-F-SC… The loss dropped the Raiders into the loser’s bracket where they faced the TL Hanna Yellow Jackets at home in an elimination game Saturday morning.
  • Hanna 6 – Laurens 4… Saturday morning Hanna struck first as the Yellow Jackets plated 4 runs in the top of the 2nd inning… They sent 10 batters to the plate and got the 4 runs on just 3 hits, 2 walks and a hit batter… The Raiders responded by plating 2 runs themselves in the bottom of the inning… With 2 outs, Jillian Sward singled and moved to third when Michaela Smith followed with a doubled… Vanessa Harshaw then doubled driving in Sward and Smith… Hanna added their final two runs in the 5th inning and 3 raider errors directly contributed to those scores… The Raiders added 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th and one of those runs was on a solo homer by Octavia Johnson… The Raiders threatened in the 7th but just could not get the key hit to score the runs… In fact, the Raiders left 13 runners stranded on base during the game….  For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: LDHS-SB-4-28-18-TLH… For the games scorecard, click on the following: LDHS-SB-4-28-18-TLH-SC… The Raiders finish the season 16-11 and finished third in the region with a 7-3 region record… Congratulations to the team on anther winning season!.

  • Braves… The Braves spent the weekend in Philadelphia where they won two out of three games with the Phillies… On Friday the Braves lost 7-3 but then rebounded to win Saturday’s game 4-1… The series finale yesterday saw the Braves take a dominating 10-1 win… The team has the night off and will start a 3-game series with the Mets tomorrow night in New York.
  • Drive… The Greenville Drive hosted the Charleston RiverDogs in a 3-game series this weekend… On Friday the Drive did something rare so far this season – they won 5-4 breaking a 13 game losing streak…. They then dropped Saturday’s game to the RiverDogs by a score of 7-2… However they did rebound yesterday to take a 2-0 win over the RiverDogs making their season record to 5-19… The Drive now have a day off as they motor up to Salisbury, Md. To start a series with the Delmarva Shorebirds tomorrow.

  • Laurens County Cancer Association will hold its annual golf tournament on Monday, May 7th… This is their major fund raiser to help the citizens of Laurens County who are battling cancer in a variety of ways… Hole sponsorships are available and the cost for a participating foursome is $800… For more information contact Ann Casey on Tuesday or Thursday at the LCCS office at 833-3976… Her email address is: lccancerassoc@gmail.com… Please come out and help the association as they help your family and friends here in Laurens County.
  • City of Clinton will be holding Rhythm on the Rails Friday and Saturday May 18 & 19th… Rhythm On The Rails is Downtown Clinton’s signature spring festival that includes retail and craft vendors, non-profit information booths, games, rides, lots of great music and BBQ… Go ahead and make plans to come out that weekend.
