Local Notes:

CHS

  • Tennis… The Red Devils boys’ tennis team will be back in action late this afternoon as they host the Camden HS Bulldogs for the Upper state championship… The winner of this match will advance to the state finals this coming Saturday at the Cayce Tennis Center… Now the match starts at 5:00 pm and I am sure Coach Simona and the team would love to have a large crowd of Red devil fans out there to support them… Go Big Red.

Laurens County Speedway… Looking at the results from the main events at the LCS last Saturday night we find:

  • Ultimate Super Late Model Series… In this main event which was the Ronnie Brookshire Memorial Race, Zack Mitchel returned to the speedway and took the win leading from wire to wire… Kyle hardy finished 2nd and Jeff Smith 3rd
  • 602 Crate… This main event had a wild finish that involved spinout on the last lap, apparent winners and red flags… By the time track officials sorted everything out, Dustin Morris wound up winning with Billy Rushton and Jeff Robinson being the next two across the finish line.
  • 604 Crate… Brett Hamm won this race but had to hold off a strong challenge by Taylor Puckett… Dustin Morris finished 3rd.
  • Thunder Bombers… Dan Lawson got out to an early lead in this race and won it by over 2 seconds in front of 2nd place finisher Dylan Chappell… Johnny Westmoreland captured the 3rd place finish.
  • FWD… Travis Jamieson did not lead early in the race but that is OK because that is not what counts, it’s the end of the race where he was the leader at the checkered flag… The race had to be stopped at one point when Andrew Patterson flipped his car but emerged unhurt… Troy McDonald and Shawn Nichols were the next two across the finish line in that order.
  • 4 Cylinders… Rod Tucker had no problem taking the win in the caution-free main event as he posted an almost 4 second win over Larry Teal… Wayne Summers finished 3rd.

Link to Playoff Brackets on WLBG Homepage… Now for the true high school baseball or softball fans out there, if you go to our homepage at wlbg.com and look down the right hand side in the “Featured Sports” area you will find a listing titled “SCHSL Baseball and Softball Brackets” .. If you click on that it will open up to a posting where you can simply click on the sport (baseball or softball) and the classification whose bracket you would like to see and t will carry you to the SCHSL page where that bracket is located…. Enjoy!

Pros …Click on the scores of the following for more information about the contest.

  • Braves 1 – Tampa Bay 0… After being swept by the Giants over the weekend, the Braves got back in action last nigh as they traveled down to the gulf coast of Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Rays… Last night’s game was somewhat of a pitchers’ duel as the Rays had 5 hits and the Braves had only 4… However one of the Braves 4 hits was a solo homer by Ronald Acuna Jr. in the 3rd inning and that was all the Breves needed as they took a 1-0 win over the Rays… Sean Newcomb pitched 6 strong innings for the Braves giving up 2 hits, striking out 6 and walking just 2.
  • Drive… The Drive were off last night and will return home tonight to start a 3-game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators.
