Sports Report for Friday, 5-11-2018

  • Baseball: Davison 8 – PC 4… The PC baseball team got back into action this past Wednesday as they traveled up to Davisson to take on the Wildcats… PC actually led in this game early as they scored their 4 runs in the top of the 4th inning to take a 4-1 lead over the Wildcats… However the Wildcats scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning and added another in the 7th to take the 8-4 win…  The Blue Hose will host Longwood this weekend starting today at 3 pm in their final home series of the season.
  • Softball Awards… Two PC softball players picked up some postseason honors this week as Macy Hyatt was named to the Big South All-Conference Second Team as well as the All-Freshman Team… Her teammate Jonnie Petree was named to the Big South All-Academic Team… For more information as to why they were chosen for these awards and other members of all three of these teams, click here.

CHS… We need to take a moment and wish some student athletes good luck as they participate in the state finals this weekend.

  • Tennis…The Red Devil boys tennis team will be traveling to the Cayce Tennis Center tomorrow for a noon match with the Battling Bishops of Bishop England HS for the Class-AAA State Championship… Bishop England defeated the defending state champions Hanahan to make it to the finals… For those of you who are planning to go the physical address of the Cayce Tennis Center is: 1120 Fort Congaree Trail, Cayce, SC 29033… Go Big Red!
  • Track… Some members of the Red Devil girls’ track team will be headed to Columbia this weekend to participate in the state finals… Good luck to Maya Smith (100-meter dash), Mia Smith (100-meter hurdles), Quiana Suber (400 meters), DeAsia Boyd (800 meters), Keria Dendy (shot put) and the 4×100 relay team… Again, Go Big Red!

LDHS

  • Former Raider Baseball Coach Dale Nelson has accepted a position as head baseball coach at Hillcrest HS starting next year according to other media sources… As you may recall Nelson stepped down as the Raider baseball coach in December of 2016 after serving as head coach for 11 years and assistant coach for 11 years before that… since he left LDHS Nelson has been an assistant coach at JL Mann.

  • Braves 9 – Marlins 2… The Atlanta Braves started a 4-game series in Miami with the Marlins last night and the game was tied 1-1 going into the 6th inning where the Braves scored 7 runs after 2 were out and then went on to take a 9-2 win over the Marlins… In the big 6th inning for the Braves Ozzie Albies hit his first career grand slam for the Braves and Freddie Freeman also had a 2-run homer… Freeman also had a total of 5 hits in the game and that is the first time in his career he has done that…. As you might suspect the Braves bats were hot and they were as they pounded out 16 hits the Marlins 5.
  • Kannapolis 2 – Drive 0… Last night at Flour Field the Greenville Dive did what they have done 24 other times this season, lose as they fell to the Kannapolis Intimidators by a score of 2-0… The Drive managed just 3 hits in the game to the Intimidators 7… The teams close out the current series tonight at Flour Field and the Drive then travel to Lexington, Ky. to start a 4-game series with the Legends tomorrow night.

  • Laurens Sings… The City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department and GoLaurens will be holding auditions for the second season of Laurens Sings tomorrow night at 6 pm and Saturday morning at 10 am at The Ridge at Laurens the Parks and Recreations headquarters complex… Those auditioning will be asked to sing a one-minute a cappella version of their favorite song.. Judges will select 15 finalists who will be announced Monday, May 21st… For more about how Laurens Sings will be done and contact information, click here.
  • City of Clinton will be holding Rhythm on the Rails Friday and Saturday May 18 & 19th… Rhythm On The Rails is Downtown Clinton’s signature spring festival that includes retail and craft vendors, non-profit information booths, games, rides, lots of great music and BBQ…For more information go to www.rotrclintonsc.com… Go ahead and make plans to come out that weekend.
  • Battle Mud May 19thThis year’s Battle Mud Run is coming up on Saturday May 19th rain or shine… This event is put on by the Laurens Family YMCA, Main Street Laurens and the Greenville Health System, Laurens County Memorial Hospital… The cost is $60 per two-person team… You can register at the Laurens YMCA or online at www.active.com
