Sports Report for Monday, 5-14-2018

Local Notes:

CHS

  • Tennis… For the second year in a row the Red Devil boys’ tennis team made it to the state championship match in Columbia… Last year they fell to Hanahan and this year they faced the Battling Bishops of Bishop England HS… Unfortunately for the second year in a row the team found itself the “bridesmaid and not the bride” as Bishop England took a 6-0 win over the Red Devils.
  • Girls Track… Members of the Clinton girls track team participated in the state track meet this weekend and the Red Devils did well… The 4×100 meter relay team finished first with a time of 49.13 seconds… Quiana Suber finished 3rd in the 400 meter dash, while Mia Smith finished 4th in the 100 meter hurdles… Keira Dendy finished 4th in the shot put, Maya Smith 5th in the 100 meter dash and Deasia Boyd 7th in the 800 meter hurdles…. For more information as to times or distances on these athletes, click here… As a team Clinton had 32 points which placed them 6th among the Class-AAA schools… For more information on how other Class-AAAA schools finished, click here…. Congratulations to the CHS athletes who participated in state finals this weekend.

Braves… The Atlanta Braves were down in Miami over the weekend taking on the Marlins… As you may recall they started the 4-game series on Thursday by taking a 9-2 win over The Fish.

  • Friday: Marlins 6 – Braves 3… On Friday the Marlins turned the tables and outhit the Braves 14-5 as they took a 6-3 win over the Braves ending the Marlins 4-game losing streak… Ozzie Albies did it his 12th homerun in the 3rd inning a solo shot.
  • Saturday: Braves 10 – Marlins 5… After the loss Friday to the Marlins the Braves rebounded and took a 10-5 win Saturday… The Braves pounded out 12 hits to the Marlins 10 hits but a big difference was that 4 of the Braves hits were homers… Freddie Freeman had a solo shot in the first inning and a 2-run homer in the fifth inning… Jose Bautista had a solo homer in the sixth inning and Ender Inciarte had a 2-run homer in the ninth inning.
  • Sunday: Braves 4 – Marlins 3… In the final game of the series yesterday afternoon the Braves led 4-0 going into the bottom of the 9th inning but had to hang on as the Marlins scored 3 runs to make the final 4-3 Braves… The Braves outhit the Marlins 8-4 and Ender Inciarte hit his third homerun of the season in the 6th inning a 2-run blast… The Braves make a quick trip to Chicago today to make up a game with the Cubs that was postponed on April 15th and the first pitch scheduled for 2:20 pm… After that game both teams fly to Atlanta for a 3-game series.

 Greenville Drive… The Greenville Drive finished their 3-game series with the Kannapolis Intimidators Friday night and then headed to Lexington, Ky. to start a 4-game series with the legends on Saturday.

  • Friday: Drive 6 – Kannapolis 4… After losing the first two games of their 3-game series with the Intimidators the Drive were able to avoid the sweep by taking a 6-4 win over the Intimidators Friday night… The Drive finally were able to outhit an opponent as they had 8 hits to the Intimidators’ 4.
  • Saturday: Legends 6 – Drive 0… After taking the win in Kannapolis of Friday the Drive had to board the bus and motor to Lexington, Ky. to take on the legends… When they got there they found they forgot to pack most of their bats onto the bus before leaving as they managed only 4 hits to the Legends 12 and lost 6-0 Saturday night.
  • Sunday: Legends 7 – Drive 3… This game was a pitcher’s duel for 6.5 innings as the score was tied 1-1… However the legends but 2 on the board in the bottom of the 7th and 4 more in the 8th to go up 7-1… The Drive did try to get back in the game in the top of the 9th inning as they scored 2 runs to make it 7-3 but could get no closer.

  • City of Clinton will be holding Rhythm on the Rails Friday and Saturday May 18 & 19th… Rhythm On The Rails is Downtown Clinton’s signature spring festival that includes retail and craft vendors, non-profit information booths, games, rides, lots of great music and BBQ…For more information go to www.rotrclintonsc.com… Go ahead and make plans to come out that weekend.
  • Battle Mud May 19thThis year’s Battle Mud Run is coming up on Saturday May 19th rain or shine… This event is put on by the Laurens Family YMCA, Main Street Laurens and the Greenville Health System, Laurens County Memorial Hospital… The cost is $60 per two-person team… You can register at the Laurens YMCA or online at www.active.com
