  • Spring Practice Football Game… The Red Devil football team has been working out hard during spring practice the last several games and they will culminate the spring practice with a spring game starting at Wilder Stadium starting a 6:00 pm this coming Friday… Mark your calendars and plan on being there for a sneak peek of next season’s team.

LDHS

  • Softball Awards… Last night the Raider softball team held their annual awards banquet with a large crowd on hand… Coach Messer handed out the JV awards and the Sportsmanship Award went to Sera Grace Dunaway, Most Improved was Trinity Morrie and the MVP Award went to Callie Wzorek… She also had some “special awards” for certain charteristics of her players… Coach Satterfield and Coach Evans handed out the varsity awards… The Sportsmanship Award went to Tamara Haney, MVP for defense to Michaela Smith, the MVP on offense to Octavia Johnson and the Team MVP to Cassie Plaia…. All-Region Awards were also given out and the Raiders who made the All-Region team were Octavia Johnson, Cassie Plaia and Tamra Haney… Congratulations not only to all these players but also to the team on another great 15 win season!

  • Football Spring Practice & Spring Game… Likewise the Laurens Raiders have been conducting spring practice and they also will be having a spring game this Friday… The Raiders will take the field at KC Hanna Stadium starting at 7:00 pm and again Raider fans can get a look at the coming season’s team which most likely will have some new wrinkles on offense.

Laurens County Speedway… Looking at each division winners in last Saturday night’s main events at the LCS you find:

  • Limited… Two familiar faces battled for the win in the Limited main event with Larry Timms passing Billy Rushton about halfway through the race and going on to take the win with Rushton finishing second… Tony Quarles finished third.
  • Thunder Bombers… In a caution free Thunder Bomber main event, Mart Patterson led wire to wire and took the checkered flag… However his car failed a post-race inspection and he was disqualified giving Dusty Eaves the win… Dylan Chappell was second and Casey Lawson third.
  • 602 Crate… Unlike the thunder bombers the 602 Crate race had 3 cautions in the first 4 laps… However that did not seem to Billy Rushton as he led wire to wire… The next two across the finish line were Colt Smith and Jeff Robinson.
  • 4 Cylinder… Scott Nelson held a brief lead in the first lap of the 4 Cylinder main event but Larry Teal did not let him keep it long as he forged to lead and never let up… Scott Nelson was able to capture second place and Nelson finished third.
  • FWD… In the FWS Jason Bishop picked up his first win of the season but was not the first driver to get the checkered flag at the end of the race… Mason Mack received the checkered flag but failed a post-race inspection and was disqualified giving Bishop the win…  . Andrew Patterson ultimately took second place, while Shawn Nichols was third.
  • SECA 604 Crate… Trent Ivey took the win in this main event but had to come from behind to do it… About halfway through the race he passed Dale Timms and then held on picking his way through lap traffic… Timms finished second and Taylor Puckett third.
  • Enduro… Bruce Barnett won his fourth race of the season in the main event of the Enduro Division leading from the green flag to the checkered flag… Branon Patterson and Eric Goghorn were the next two across the finish line.

Pros …Click on the scores of the following for more information about the contest.

  • Cubs 3 – Braves 2… Last night the Braves and the Cubs got together in Atlanta… The Braves carried a 2-1 lead into the top of the 9th when the Cubs struck for 2 runs and held the Braves scoreless in the bottom of the 9th to take a 3-1 win… Having umpired for over 30 years myself I hate to say anything about the umpiring but I think they blew 2 calls in the 5th inning one of which cost the Braves a score… The Braves two runs came on a pair of solo homers one by Ender Inciarte in the 4th and one by Robert Acuna Jr. in the 8th inning.
  • Lexington 4 – Drive 3… The Greenville Drive and the Lexington Legends played the final game of their current 4-game series in Kentucky last night and the Drive actually led 3-1 going into the bottom of the 7th inning… However the legends scored single runs in the 7th, 8th and 9th innings to take a walk-off 4-3 win over the Drive… The Drive have the night off before returning home to Flour Field on Thursday to start a 4-game series with the Augusta GreenJackets.
