Sports Report for Monday, 5-21-2018

Local Notes:

  • Spring Game… The Red Devils were able to get in a little over an hour last Friday night before lightning in the area forced them to cut it short… By all accounts the Red Devil offense which was led by rising junior quarterback Konnor Richardson seemed to fair a little better than the defense.

  • Spring Game… The Laurens Raiders decided to postpone their Spring Game until tonight at 7:00 pm… Before it starts there will be a Powder Puff Game starting at 5:30.

Pros …Click on the scores of the following for more information about the contest.

Kurt Suzuki had his sixth homer of the season a solo shot in the 7th inning and Freddie Freeman had his ninth of the season in the 8th inning a two run blast.
  • Sunday: Braves 10 – Marlins 9…  Dansby Swanson lined a two out, bases loaded 2-2 pitch about 2 feet fair into the leftfield corner driving in two runs to cap a 6-run 9th inning giving the Braves a 10-9 walk-off comeback win over the Marlins in Atlanta yesterday afternoon… The Marlins scored 6 runs in the 4th inning to go up 6-0 and the Braves did not get on the board until the bottom of the 6th inning when they plated 2 runs… The Marlins got those back in the top of the &th but the Braves responded scoring 2 more in the bottom of the inning… The Marlins added what they thought would be an insurance run in the top of the 9th but the Braves did not throw in the towel as they scored 6 to take the win and the series 2 games to 1… The Braves start a road trip tonight with the first stop being in Philadelphia to take on the Phillies.

Drive… The Greenville Drive started a 4-game series with the Augusta GreenJackets last Thursday and as you may recall I mentioned Friday morning that the GreenJackets took a 2-1 win Thursday afternoon.

  • Friday: Augusta 2 – Drive 1… On Friday the GreenJackets took another 2-1 win over the Drive… Both teams had 5 hits but one of the GreenJackets’ was a homer and the Drive had a couple of errors.
  • Saturday: Augusta 5 – Drive 2… On Saturday the Drive scored two runs (as many as they did in the first two games combined) but unfortunately for Drive fans Augusta scored 5 taking the win… Again the number of hits were close (6-5 Marlins) but again a homerun by Augusta helped to make the difference.
  • Sunday… Yesterday the two teams started the final game of the series but had the game suspended due to rain and will be completed later in the month… The Drive now start a road trip with the first stop being in Ashville tonight as the Southern Conference takes over Flour Field for their baseball tournament staring tomorrow.
