Sports Report for Tuesday, 5-22-2018

Presbyterian College Notes: For more information on any game listed below, click on the score(s).

  • Baseball…  The PC baseball team closed out their regular season on the road with a 3-game series with Panthers that started last Thursday… As you may recall I mentioned Friday that the Panthers had taken a 6-0 win on Thursday… The game on Friday was postponed due to weather so they played a doubleheader on Saturday… In game one the Panthers took a 1-0 win… In game two the Blue Hose lead 3-2 going into the bottom of the 9th inning when the Panthers tried it to send the game to extra innings… A walk-off homerun in the 10th inning lifted the Panthers to a 4-3 win… PC ends the regular season with a 15-39 record and 8-19 in Big South Play… Now that conference record means that the Blue Hose will not make the Conference Tournament which starts today in Lynchburg, Va. on the campus of Liberty University… If you would like to see more information about the Big South Baseball Tournament, click here.

Local Notes:

LDHS

  • Spring Game… The Laurens Raiders were finally able to cap off their spring practice with their Spring Game at KC Hanna Stadium last night… The Raiders had a large number of players turnout for the practice and as Coach Liner admitted it was a very physical two weeks of practice… They also worked on installing a new offense which thinks better fits his personnel and fans got a glimpse of that last night as the green team took a 20-7 win over the white team…. In action prior to the contest, the seniors took a 12-6 win over the juniors in Powder Puff action… Photo courtesy of Justin Heisey.

Laurens Academy:

  • Laurens Academy Sports Banquet… Last night Laurens Academy held their Sports Award Banquet in front of a large crowd of players, family and friends… Each of the sports and cheerleading coaches recognized their players and handed out awards…. Time and space does not allow me to list them here but if you click on the following it will open a PDF that list all the award winners: LA Sports Award List  2017-2018… Also the Female and Male Scholar Athletes of the Year were announced and those honors went to Ashley Magda (4.18 GPA) and Wil Tindal (4.53 GPA)… The final award of the night went to senior Taylor Campbell was named to the Laurens Academy Sports Hall of Fame. To qualify a student athlete has to accumulate a set number of points over their career that are awarded by a predetermine points per item on a list of accomplishments as an individual but more so as a member of a team. The senior had more than enough points to qualify and she is only the second female athlete to named to the hall. Congratulations to Taylor and all the other award winners!

Pros …Click on the scores of the following for more information about the contest.

  • Phillies 3 – Braves 0… Last night the NL east leading Braves traveled to Philadelphia to start a series with the second place Phillies… The Braves saw their lead in the division drop to just ½ a game as the Phillies took a 3-0 win… The Phills only outhit the Braves 8-5 but got the clutch hits when the counted.
  • Ashville 11 – Drive 10… The Greenville Drive started a road trip last night with the first stop being in Ashville to take on the Tourist… This game had plenty of offense as the two teams combined for 21 runs and 32 hits with the Drive getting 17 of those 32 hits… Unfortunately the Tourist had 11 of the 21 runs as they took an 11-10 win in 10 innings.
