Marriage License & Research Fees

Laurens County Council last night gave 2nd reading for two items regarding fees charged by the Probate Judge. Council is in the process of repealing an ordinance that set fees for the Clerk of Court to charge. They’re also voting on a Resolution which will set fees. Any future changes in rates will still have to come to County Council, but the resolution process is expected to make any necessary changes easier to accomplish.

Under the new rates given 2nd of 3 approvals last evening, fees for wedding license go up from $25 to $35 for Laurens County Residents. The rate will be higher for South Carolina residents living outside Laurens County, and higher still for out-of-state residents getting their wedding license here.

The Resolution is to also set the rate the Probate Court charges for doing research, which is usually looking up genealogical records. That charge will be $5.

Council Member David Pitts said he thought there should be no charge for providing this, since it’s public information. Council Member Stewart Jones joined Pitts in voting no, but the 2nd reading for the ordinance and the resolution both passed with yes votes from Council Members Wood, Anderson and McDaniel.
