Sports Report for Thursday, 5-24-2018

Local Notes:

CHS

  • District 56 Joins Other Districts and Schools in Lawsuit… According to various media reports around the area, Laurens School District 56 has joined a lawsuit against the SCHSL concerning allowing Union County to be realigned into Class AAA for the next two years… Originally they were placed in Class AAAA where they would not have been the smallest school and appealed to the SCHSL Executive Committee which denied the appeal by a vote of 14-0… They appealed on the basis of travel and time out of class… They carried the appeal to the league’s Appellant Panel where they won a narrow 4-3 decision to grant the appeal and put them in Class AAA in the region with Clinton where they by far and away will be the largest school…  The suit by the other schools and districts cites the lack of transparency in the process, failure to notify schools ahead of the appeal that would be affected by the move, violation of Freedom of Information act and other factors… Personally I hope they win because the Appellant Panel had no basis or precedent strong enough to act as they did.
