District 56 Awards Firefighters & Reading Volunteers

The May meeting of the Laurens County School District 56 Board of Trustees was held last night at the M.S. Bailey Child Development Center on Elizabeth Street in Clinton and Spirit of 56 Awards were awarded.

The first set of awards went to Scott Shifflett and Michael Addison of the Clinton Department of Public Safety Fire Division.  Both men have provided their experience, expertise and their time to assist with the ongoing Fire Service classes at Clinton High School.  The award was presented by Superintendent Dr. David O’Shields as Director of Public Safety Robin Morse looked on.

Chief Morse commented that all four men involved, the two award recipients, himself and Dr. O’Shields were graduates of Clinton High School.  Since there had just been a presentation to the board by the 4-K kindergarten kids from M.S. Bailey, Dr. O’Shields commented about the moment providing a look at the present and the future leadership of the community.

A Spirit of 56 Award was also presented to the Presbyterian Communities of South Carolina.  Dr. O’Shields explained that a group from the Clinton location of Presbyterian Communities volunteers at M.S. Bailey Child Development Center.  They read to and with the children and have become a vital part of the education of these children.  Several of the ladies associated with the group have also knitted hats and scarves for the children.

The Spirit of 56 Award is presented for service above and beyond what could be expected in furtherance of education in School District 56.
