Presbyterian College Notes:

  • PC Graduates 70 Student Athletes… When PC graduates walked across the stage earlier this month to get their degrees 70 student-athletes were counted among their number… As the term student-athlete implies they are students first and athletes second… Women’s basketball player Janie Miles was named the Outstanding Senior and she along with men’s soccer player Jonathan Turnley were the 2018 Valedictorians… Thirty of the 70 graduated with honors… For more information about this, click here… Congratulations to all the graduating student-athletes.

Local Notes:


  • Winter / Spring Athletic Awards…  Back on Tuesday night the CHS Athletic Department and the Booster Club held their Winter / Spring Athletic Awards Ceremony in the main gym at CHS… Student-athletes from all the winter and spring sports who received team, region and even state awards were recognized and presented their awards… The highlight of the night was the presentation of the Male and Female Athletes of the Year at CHS… Sam Tiller and Ashlyn Abercrombie were the recipients of those awards… Both were three-sport athletes this past school year… If you would like to see a list of tall the student-athletes honored and what their awards were, click here… Congratulation to all these awards winners especially Sam & Ashlyn!… Photo from CHS.


College Notes

  • LSU 6 – South Carolina 4 (12)…  The Gamecocks saw their run in the SEC Tournament come to an end yesterday as they fell to LSU 6-4 in 12 innings… The two teams battled back and forth with runs being scarce in the first nine innings… LSU went up 3-2 in the top of the 8th inning and Carolina managed to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th to send the game into extra innings… In the top of the 12th inning LSU plated 3 runs on an error, walk, an RBI single and a two-run double… The Gamecocks did manage to plate a run in the bottom of the inning but could get no closer… The Gamecocks record now stands at 32-24 and they will find out Monday if that is good enough to get them into the College World Series… To see how other teams did in the tournament and the tournament bracket, click here.
  • Clemson 7 – Miami 1… The Clemson Tigers did not score 21 runs against Miami yesterday like they did Notre Dame on Wednesday but that’s OK as they  did score 7 runs and that was enough to defeat the Hurricanes 7-1 in ACC Baseball Tournament yesterday… The two teams were tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the 6th inning when the Tigers broke the game open putting six runs on the board in the inning… The Tigers advance to the semifinal round to play the winner of Friday’s game between Florida State and NC State on Saturday at 5 pm… If you would like to go to the ACC website where the results and schedules are posted, click here… You will have to scroll down some after you get there.
  • Southern Conference… Yesterday in Southern Conference Baseball Tournament action at Flour Filed, ETSU eliminated the Furman Paladins as they took a 5-2 win… In other action Wofford lost to Samford 5-2 dropping the Terriers into the loser’s bracket… They will play UNC-Greensboro today about 2:30 pm… For more information on these games, how other teams di and the schedule for the rest of the tournament, click here then scroll down some.

  • Braves… The Atlanta Braves were off last night and travel to Bastion to start a 3-game series with the Red Sox tonight… The Braves enter the series 29-19 on the season and lead the NL East by half a game over the second place Phillies.
  • Ashville 4 – Drive 2… The Greenville Drive wrapped up their 4-game series with the Ashville Tourist up in Ashville last night with a 4-2 loss to the Tourist… As has often been the case this season, the Drive led early but could not hold it… The Tourist won the series 3 games to 1… The Drive travel down I-26 to Columbia to start a 4-game series with the Columbia Fireflies tonight.

  • Raider Youth Football Camp 2018… On Thursday, June 7th from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm the Laurens Raider football staff will be conducting a youth football camp at KC Hanna Field… The camp is open to rising 2nd – 8th graders and it is always a lot of fun for the youth as the Raider staff has age appropriate football related activities… The cost is only $20 and you register the day of the camp between the hours of 8:00 – 9:00 am…By the way that cost includes launch…  If you have any questions contact either Coach Sentell Peake or Coach Brian Lothridge….   • Finally Friday… The City of Laurens and Main Street Laurens will hold the first of their Finally Friday on the Square Friday, May 25 from 7- 9 pm… There will be a family game area, music, concessions, beer & wine and businesses on the square will be open late… The music for this Friday will be provided by the Carolina Coast and it is free to the public… The other Finally Friday events will be held on the last Friday of each month… The theme for the summer concert series will be beach music… On June 29th the Shag Doctorz will perform and on July 27th there will be an ice cream event…. At the end of August Split Shot will present the music and in September The Carolina Player are scheduled to provide the music.
