Clemson Regional… Looking at the Clemson Regional this weekend:

  • Friday: Clemson 4 – Morehead State 3 (10)… A walk-off single by Jordan Greene drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as Tigers took a 4-3 win over the Morehead State Eagles… The Tigers outhit the Eagles 11-6 and Seth Beer hit his 21st homer of the season…. In the first game on Friday, Vanderbilt defeated St Johns 2-0.
  • Saturday: Vanderbilt 4 – 3… On Saturday Clemson took a 3-0 into the bottom of the 2nd inning in their winners bracket game with Vanderbilt but the Commodores scored 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game and then went on to take a 4-3 win over the Tigers… The Commodores outhit the Tigers 9-6 and one of their hits was a homer…. In an elimination game prior to the Vanderbilt game, St John’s eliminated Morehead State by taking an 11-5 win.
  • Sunday Game 1: Clemson 9 – St John’s 8… In their first game on Sunday, the Tigers fell behind early 3-0 in their game with the St. John’s Red Storm but by the time the they entered the bottom of the 9th inning the Tigers had a 9-4 lead… The Red Storm did not go quietly as they scored 4 runs in the bottom of the inning but could get no closer as Clemson hung on to take a 9-8 win eliminating St. John’s and earning them a shat at Vanderbilt later in the day.
  • Sunday Game 2: Vanderbilt 19 – Clemson 6….In the second game yesterday against Vanderbilt the Tigers lost by a score of 19-6 thus ending their season… The best way to summarize this game is to simply say that Vanderbilt outhit the Tigers 20-8 and 9 (a Vanderbilt school record in a single game) of their hits were homers including a grand slam… The Tigers finish their season with a 47-16 record.

 

Greenville, NC Regional hosted by East Carolina University

  • Friday: South Carolina 8 – Ohio State 3… In the first game of the regional on Friday, the Gamecocks and Ohio State hooked up in a pitchers’ duel for the first 6.5 innings as the Buckeyes led 2-0 going into the bottom of the 7th inning… That is where the Gamecocks but 5 runs on the board and then added 3 more in the 8th to propel them to an 8-3 win over Ohio State…. Danny Blair had a 3-run homer in that big 7th inning… In last game of the day, the host ECU Pirates took 16-7 win over UNC Wilmington Seahawks.
    Saturday: South Carolina 4 – ECU 2… After some rain delays on Saturday, the Gamecocks and the host ECU Pirates hooked up in a winners’ bracket game… The Gamecocks scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and added an insurance run in the 8th as they took a 4-2 win over the Pirates.
  • Sunday… Yesterday they started the Elimination game between Pirates and the Seahawks and played 3 innings when rain storms forced the game to be suspended at the end of the 3rd inning… The delay lasted 5 hours and after they restarted the game the UNC Wilmington Seahawks eliminated the home Pirated by taking a 9-7 win… The game did not finish until after 10:00 pm so the regional finals will take place today starting at 1:00 pm with the Gamecocks needing to win one of a possible two games to advance to the Super Regional .hosted by SEC foe Arkansas.

Braves… As you may recall, the Atlanta Braves started a 4-game series with the Washington Nationals in Atlanta last Thursday a half game behind the Nationals who were leading the NL East… The Braves took a 4-2 win on Thursday so let’s see how the rest of the games in the series went over the weekend.

  • Friday: Braves 4 – Washington 0… On Friday Braves’ pitcher Mike Foltynewicz pitched a 2-hit complete game shutout as the Braves took a 4-0 win over the Nationals… He struck out 11 and walked only 1 in the game… The Braves had 9 hits and scored all their runs in the 7th inning with the big blow being a 3-run homer by Dansby Swanson.
  • Saturday: Washington 5 – Braves 3 (14)… On Saturday the Braves and the Nationals were tied 3-3 at the end of regulation and it stayed that way until the 14th inning when the Nationals put 2 runs on the board and then held the Braves scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-3 win… Johan Camargo did have a 2-run homer in the 5th inning.
  • Sunday: Braves 4 – Washington 2… Yesterday the Braves won the series finale by a score of 4-2 as Charlie Culbertson had a one out, 2-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th inning giving the Braves the win and allowing them to take the series win 3-1 and putting them 1.5 games in front of the Nationals in the NL East…  The Braves now start a road trip to the west coast where their first stop will be in San Diego tonight at 10:10 pm for the first game of a 3-game series with the Padres.

Greenville Drive… The Greenville Drive started a 3-game home stand last Friday with the Ashville Tourist.

  • Friday: Drive 7 – Tourist 4… On Friday the Drive started the series on a positive note for the Drive as they took a 7-4 win over the Tourist… The Drive led 7-0 going into the top of the 8th inning when the Tourist but 4 runs on the board but could get no closer.
  • Saturday: Drive 13 – Tourist 5… On Saturday the Drive did something that they have only done a couple of times this year as they won back to back games by taking a 13-5 win over the Tourist… Ashville put 3 runs on the board in the 1st but the Drive put 5 on the board in the second and then never trailed the rest of the way.
  • Sunday: Drive 7 – Tourist 6… In the final game of the series yesterday, the Drive trailed 6-5 going into the bottom of the 9th inning but they came back and took a walk-off 7-6 win over the Tourist to take three games in a row and a series sweep for the first time this season… The Drive will have tonight off and travel to Augusta to take on the GreenJackets playing 4 games in 3 days starting with a doubleheader tomorrow.

  • Raider Youth Football Camp 2018… On Thursday, June 7th from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm the Laurens Raider football staff will be conducting a youth football camp at KC Hanna Field… The camp is open to rising 2nd – 8th graders and it is always a lot of fun for the youth as the Raider staff has age appropriate football related activities… The cost is only $20 and you register the day of the camp between the hours of 8:00 – 9:00 am…By the way that cost includes launch… If you have any questions contact either Coach Sentell Peake or Coach Brian Lothridge….   • Finally Friday… The City of Laurens and Main Street Laurens will hold another Finally Friday on the Square Friday, June 29th from 7- 9 pm… There will be a family game area, music, concessions, beer & wine and businesses on the square will be open late… The music for this Friday will be provided by the Shag Doctorz and it is free to the public… The other Finally Friday events will be held on the last Friday of each month… The theme for the summer concert series will be beach music… On July 27th there will be an ice cream event…. At the end of August Split Shot will present the music and in September The Carolina Player are scheduled to provide the music.
  • PC Baseball Camps… Coach Elton Pollock and his staff will be conducting at least two baseball camps this summer and might do more… Their first camp will be a one day camp on Tuesday, June 12 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm… It is open to youth in grades 9-12 and Junior College players… The camp will consist of intensive instruction, an extensive pro-style workout, batting practice and scrimmages… The cost is only $175.00.
