Middle School News

  • Johnston Returning to District 55… A couple of weeks ago I learned through “the grapevine” that Chris Johnston was coming back to Laurens Dist. 55 as the athletic director at Hickory Tavern MS replacing Jon Jansen who is leaving to become the head girls basketball coach at Woodruff HS… At that time I called him and he told me that was true but that all the “paper work and legal stuff” had not been completed… I confirmed at that time with Dist. 55 officials he was coming back as a teacher but the as I said all the formalities had not been completed… Other media sources are now reporting what I already knew but was holding back for the official announcement… Chris as you may recall was AD and coach at Laurens MS for a number of years where his football and basketball teams were very successful… He left the district last year to return to his home school Ware Shoals HS as PE teacher and girls’ basketball coach… Chris’s late father Bob Johnston was a teacher and held a similar position as girls’ basketball coach of the Hornets for many years winning several State Championships and the gym there is named after him…  Chris said it was always a dream of his to go back to ware Shoals and coach and he was very thankful to AD Mike Craigo and Principal Paul Anderson (both Ware Shoals alumni) for giving him that chance… When asked why he chose to leave he expressed 2 reasons… One was the opportunity to be able to “run his own program” again and the fact that Hickory Tavern is such a great school and community very much like Ware Shoals… Congratulations to Chris and welcome back!

College Baseball Notes

  • Arkansas 14 – South Carolina 4… In game three of the Arkansas Super regional last night the Gamecocks saw their season come to an end as the Razorbacks took a 14-4 win over the Gamecocks thus punching the Razorbills ticket to the CWS starting this weekend… The #5 Razorbacks wasted little time in setting the tone of the game as they scored 5 runs in the bottom of the first and 2 more in the second to take a 7-0 lead and never looked back as they pounded out 11 clutch hits while holding the Gamecocks to just 6 scattered hits… The Gamecocks end their first season under the leadership of Mark Kingston with a 37-26 record while the Razorbacks stand at 44-19 and will be playing Texas I believe in their CWS opener…. For more information on this game, click on the score at the beginning of this segment.
  • Other Teams in the Final 8… In addition to Arkansas and Texas, the other teams headed to Omaha for the CWS are Mississippi State, Washington, North Carolina, Oregon State, Florida and Texas Tech.

  • Rome 8 – Drive 2… The Greenville Drive started a series with the Rome Braves last night at Flour Field and led the game 2-1 going into the 8th inning… That is when the wheels started coming off the bus for the Drive as the Braves put 4 runs on the board in the inning and added 3 more in the top of the 9th to take an 8-3 win over the Drive.
