Sports Report for Monday, 6-25-2018

Local Notes:

 LDHS

  • Free Softball Clinics on Mondays… Don’t forget that LDHS softball Coach Michaela Smith will conducting free softball clinics for girls in grades 2-6 on Monday nights to help the young ladies in District 555 improve their softball skills and learn the proper fundamentals in a fun environment… Come to the LDHS softball field starting at 7pm and the clinics will conclude at 8:30 pm.

  

Laurens Minors Win District Title… The Laurens Little League Minors team won the District Championship in the tournament which was played at the Laurens City Parks over the weekend… They defeated Wren 8-3 Thursday night then took a 12-2 win over Greenwood on Friday… They clinched the title by defeating Easley 16-0… When I asked Coach Patterson about his team yesterday he said that all his pitchers had solid outings and that on offense the bats were hot as each member of the team contributed when needed… Only allowing the opposition to score 5 runs in 3 days also means the defense was solid… Laurens will be hosting the State Minors Championship Tournament starting on July 7th but Laurens will draw a bye in the opening round and start their participation on July 8th… Easley finished second in the District Tournament and has also qualified for the State Tournament… Good luck to the future Raiders!

Finals Start Today… The final two teams who will face each other for the National Championship have now been determined… Oregon State and Arkansas will start a best of 3 series for the title tonight at 7 pm on ESPN…. Let’s see how they got to this point in action over the weekend.

  • Arkansas 5 – Florida 2… Arkansas came into their game with Florida last Friday needing to win only 1 game of a possible two games as they were the undefeated team in their bracket… Well one game is all they needed as they took a 5-2 win over the Gators to punch their ticket to the finals… The Razorbacks outhit the Gators 11-3.
  • Oregon State… With Oregon State the story is quite different as they needed to take 2 wins over undefeated Mississippi State… In the Friday game, the Beavers showed they were not going to go quietly as they took a 12 -2 win over the Bulldogs outhitting them 15-5… The in the winner take all game on Saturday the Beavers scored 5 runs in the 3rd and then made them stand up as they took a 5-2 win over the Bulldogs to advance to the finals out of the losers’ bracket.

Braves… The Braves hosted the Baltimore Orioles in a 3-game series at Sun Trust Park this weekend.

  • Friday: Orioles 10 – Braves 7 (13)… In the first game of the series on Friday night, the Orioles had a 7-3 going into the bottom of the 9th inning when the Braves scored 4 runs to tie the game 7-7…. The game remained tied until the top of the 15th inning where the Orioles plated 3 runs to take a 10-7 lead then held the Braves scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take the win.
  • Saturday: Orioles 7 – Braves 5… On Saturday the Orioles scored 4 runs in the 1st inning and 3 in the 5th to take a 7-5 win over the Braves… The Braves actually outhit the Orioles 12-7 but the Orioles got the clutch hits and the Braves did not.
  • Sunday: Braves 7 – Orioles 3… The Braves were able to avoid the sweep by taking a 7-3 win over the Orioles yesterday… Ozzie Albies keyed the Braves attack getting 3 hits and scoring 2 runs… Dansby Swanson had a pinch-hit homerun…The Braves now host the Cincinnati Reds in a 3-game series starting tonight at Sun Trust Park.

2018 MLB All-Star Game… The MLB All-Star Game will be held on Tuesday, July 17th and it will be at Nationals Park in Washington, DC and you will be able to watch it on FOX… Now some of you die-hard baseball fans out there may be interested in voting on the players you would like to see in the game… If so click here to go to the MLB website where you can vote…. You may vote up to 5 times every 24 hours (up to a total of 35 ballots) and the voting ends on July 5th at 11:59 pm ET… Vote, I did! 

Drive… The Drive finished their 3-game series with the Ashville Tourist and started a 3 game series with the Rome Braves over the weekend…. As you may recall, the Drive took a 6-3 win over the Tourist on Thursday in the first game of their series.

  • Friday and Saturday… Well after winning the first game of the series the Drive dropped the next two games as the Tourist took a 6-2 win on Friday and 4-3 win on Saturday in 10 innings.
  • Sunday: Rome 7 – Drive 5… Yesterday the Drive traveled to Rome, Ga. to start a 3-game series with the Braves… The news is not good here either for Drive fans as the Braves took a 7-5 win over the Drive even though the Drive outhit them 10-9.

  • Clinton YMCA Summer Camps and Swimming Lessons… The Clinton Family YMCA will be having a full slate of summer sports camps this summer and will also be offering swimming lessons throughout the summer… To see complete details on all these click here… The next camps is a cheer camp starting July 9th for girls ages 5-12 and you must register by Friday, 7-6 at 5 pm… The other camp is a soccer camp starting July 16th for boys and girls ages 6-12… The deadline to register for it is July 13th at 5 pm… Again for more details on these and swimming lessons click here.
  • City of Laurens Parks and recreation Sumer Camps… The City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department will be conducting 3 camps this summer… They will have a Straight Street Camp (June 11-29), basketball camp (July 9-12) and a baseball camp (July 16-19)… Also registration will open for cheerleading, football and fall baseball at different times this summer… For more information about all of these, click here.
  • PC Summer Sports Camps… This summer various sports at PC will be holding camps for various age groups of youth in the area… To see a complete listing of all the camps click here… The nest camp is: Academy Showcase Soccer Camps… June 29- July 1 and July 27-29… These camps are for high are for rising high school freshman – seniors… The camps are intended to put college-bound elite high school soccer player in the best possible environment in this intense three-day camp… During the day, camper will be in high-level technical and tactical training session conducted by the Presbyterian College staff or other high level college coaches from the area… In the evening players will be coached and evaluated in 11 v 11 match play…Each day of camp features coaches who will educate campers on topics including: strength and conditioning, college recruiting, and what it is like to be an NCAA Division 1 athlete….   • Finally Friday… The City of Laurens and Main Street Laurens will hold another Finally Friday on the Square Friday, June 29th from 7- 9 pm… There will be a family game area, music, concessions, beer & wine and businesses on the square will be open late… The music for this Friday will be provided by the Shag Doctorz and it is free to the public… The other Finally Friday events will be held on the last Friday of each month… The theme for the summer concert series will be beach music… On July 27th there will be an ice cream event…. At the end of August Split Shot will present the music and in September The Carolina Player are scheduled to provide the music.
