CPW to Assist Employee Education

The Laurens Commission of Public Works gave unanimous approval last night to a resolution to assist employees seeking further education. CPW General Manager John Young explained, “This resolution’s purpose is to attempt to provide limited financial assistance to those employees desiring to obtain educational degrees or certificates beyond the secondary level.”

The resolution states that each request for assistance would be decided on an employee-by-employee basis regarding the terms and conditions for the CPW to assist. An example given of such an agreement was a current employee who expressed an interest to pursue a Heating, Ventilation and Refrigeration (HVAC) Certificate at Piedmont Technical College.

One stipulation for the agreement is that the employee shall be required to maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point ratio for each course taken. After successfully completing the chosen course of study, the employee will be obligated to remain in the employment of the Laurens Commission of Public

Works for a period of one year. The employer’s total obligation of payments for such an agreement shall not exceed $5,000.
