Sports Report for Thursday, 7-12-2018

Local Notes:

Clinton O-Zone All-Stars…The Clinton O-Zone All-Stars entered the last day of State Tournament play at Union yesterday know exactly what they needed to do… It was very simple, beat undefeated Hartsville twice.

  • Game 1; Clinton 7 – Hartsville 3… In the first game yesterday morning Clinton took care of business as they defeated Hartsville 7-3… Clinton plated a single run in the 1st inning and another in the 3rd before Hartsville got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 2-1… Clinton responded with 2 runs in the top of the 4th and 3 in the 6th to take a 7-1 lead… Hartsville was able to plate 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th but could get no closer… Clinton outhit Hartsville 8-5 and both Caleb Taylor and Zane McClendon homered for Clinton… Three different Clinton players had two hits each and if you want to see who they were, click here to see the box score of the game.
  • Game 2: Hartsville 6 –Clinton 5 (7)… In the second game Clinton carried a 5-3 lead into the top of the 5th inning when Hartsville plated a single run and then tied the game with another run in the top of the 6th… Clinton was not able to score in the bottom of the inning so the game moved on to the 7th inning where Hartsville was able to get a runner on third and scored when the Clinton pitcher balked with 2 out… Kason Copeland led off the bottom of the 7th fir Clinton with a single… During the next two Clinton at-bats which both resulted in outs he was able to steal second and third… Tanner Kydo then drew a walk and promptly store second while Jy Leake battled off pitches 5 foul balls and a controversial call where he was hit by a pitch but not awarded base because the umpire ruled he leaned into the pitch and got hit…. In the end he struck out stranding the tying run at third and ending Clinton’s bid for the state championship a run short… Clinton had 10 hits in the game and Caleb Taylor had 3 of them going 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI…. Laurens Little League Minors All-Stars

  • Laurens 4 – Greenville 2… The Laurens Little League (B3) Minors punched their ticket to the finals of the Minors state Tournament being held at the Laurens City Parks last night with a 4-2 win over Greenville… Laurens opened the game plating 3 runs in the top of the first and then taking advantage of Greenville miscues to win the game… Laurens starting pitcher Braden Yarbourogh went 4⅔ strong innings picking up the win with Dee Suber getting the save in relief giving up a single run in the bottom of the 6th inning… Both teams had 5 hits but Laurens took full advantage of 3 Greenville errors and a couple of wild pitches… To see the games box score and some stats click here and to see the game’s scorecard click here… Laurens will now face undefeated Northwood today at 7:00 pm and must win that game to force a winner take all game tomorrow night at 7:00… Why don’t you make plans to come on out and cheer them on as they battle a tough Northwood team.

  • Braves 9 – Blue Jays 5… After losing the first game Tuesday night of their 2-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays 6-2, the Braves rebounded last night and took a 9-5 win over the Jays to split the series… The Braves pounded out 12 hits to the Jays  outhitting them 11-9 8 hits and two of the Braves hits were homers by Ozzie Albies as he hit his 19th and 20th homers of the season, one from each side of the plate… The Blue Jays also had two homers in the game and one of them was by former Gamecock Justin Smoak (14)… The Braves have the night off and will host the Arizona Diamondbacks starting tomorrow night in their last series before the All-Star break.
  • Drive 6 – Braves 4… The Greenville Drive got back into action last night as they started a 3-game series with the Rome Braves at Flour Field… Good news for Drive fans as they took a 6-4 win over the Baby Braves.


  • Free Football Camp This Saturday…There will be a free football camp for youth ages 8-18 this Saturday at KC Hanna Stadium… The Camp is being sponsored by Bigger Than Sports South Carolina an organization whose board members include Coach Chris Liner, Marcus Latimore, Jay Spearman and other notable former football players for across the state… The title of the camp is F.A.M.S. which stands for Faith, Agility, Movement and Speed…. The camp starts at 9:00 am and will finish at 11:30 am… Again it is free and other than cleats no special equipment or apparel is needed.
  • Free Softball Clinics on Mondays… Don’t forget that LDHS softball Coach Michaela Smith will conducting free softball clinics for girls in grades 2-6 on Monday nights to help the young ladies in District 55 improve their softball skills and learn the proper fundamentals in a fun environment… Come to the LDHS softball field starting at 7pm and the clinics will conclude at 8:30 pm…. Clinics are scheduled to run each Monday from now through July 23rd.
  • Softball Tryouts… Coach Smith is also inviting any young lady in grades 7-12 who would like to come out for softball or just see if you might be interested to come to the workouts they are now having on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night between the hours of 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm at the LDHS softball field.

  • City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Sumer Camps… The City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department will be conducting 2 more camps this summer… They will have a basketball camp (July 9-12) and a baseball camp (July 16-19)… Also registration will open for cheerleading, football and fall baseball at different times this summer… For more information about all of these, click here.
