College Notes

  • SEC Media Days…  SEC Media Day started back on Monday and it wraps up today… There are only three head coaches who have not taken the stage to answer question… One of those three is South Carolina’s Will Muschamp as he will be the last coach to face the media… He is scheduled to face the media and talk about the Gamecocks at 11:10 am this morning… He is also supposed to have Jake Bentley (QB), Deebo Samuel (WR) and D.J.   • ACC Media Days… The ACC Media Days (they call it the 2018 ACC Football Kickoff) will started yesterday and half the ACC head coaches had their turn at the microphone and it wraps up today also… Clemson’s Dabo Swinney will be the last coach to speak today and he is scheduled to speak 2:15 this afternoon… The players he is supposed to have with him are Mitch Hyatt (OT) and Clelin Ferrell (DT)… To go to the ACC website where they have the complete schedule and links to watch it live click here

 

Pros

Braves & Drive… Both the Atlanta Braves and the Greenville Drive were off last night… The Braves get back into action after the All-Star break tomorrow as they start a 3-game series in DC against the Nationals… The Drive return to action tonight starting a series up in Ashville against the Tourist.

MLB Standings… Since there is very little local action at this time it gives us a good opportunity to check on the MLB standings near the midpoint of the season and the All-Star break… (Top 3 teams, record and games behind.)

National League

  • East: Philadelphia – 53-42, Atlanta 52-42 – 0.5, Washington 48-48 – 5.5

Panthers

  • Training Camp… The Carolina Panthers will be reporting to Wofford College in two weeks for their annual training camp which starts two weeks from today with a Kickoff Party at Gibbs Stadium at 4 pm as the Panthers will have their first practice at 6:30 pm… Now to go to the Panthers website where you will find the training camp schedule, what not to bring, what you can bring and the answers to most any question you might have about the camp, click here.

 LDHS

  • Free Softball Clinics on Mondays… Don’t forget that LDHS softball Coach Michaela Smith will conducting free softball clinics for girls in grades 2-6 on Monday nights to help the young ladies in District 55 improve their softball skills and learn the proper fundamentals in a fun environment… Come to the LDHS softball field starting at 7pm and the clinics will conclude at 8:30 pm…. Clinics are scheduled to run each Monday from now through at least the end of July.
  • Softball Tryouts… Coach Smith is also inviting any young lady in grades 7-12 who would like to come out for softball or just see if you might be interested to come to the workouts they are now having on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night between the hours of 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm at the LDHS softball field.
  • Cheerleading Kiddie Camp… Once again this year the LDHS Cheerleaders will be offering a Cheerleading Kiddie Camp on Saturday, August 4th in the Auxiliary Gym at LDHS… The camp will start at 9 am and conclude at noon and is open to youth ages 3-12… Instruction will be done by both JV and Varsity cheerleaders under the supervision of their coaches… There will be snacks, crafts and games as well as a T-shirt included in the $30 cost of the camp… Those who attend will give a performance at the end of the camp and on August 31st during the third quarter of the Raider football game with Myrtle Beach… Now for complete details on this camp, the registration form and contact information if you have further questions, click here.

  • Clinton YMCA Summer Camps and Swimming Lessons… The Clinton Family YMCA will be having a full slate of summer sports camps this summer and will also be offering swimming lessons throughout the summer… To see complete details on all these click here… The next camp is a dancer camp starting August 6th for girls ages 5-12… The deadline to register for it is Friday, August 3rd at 5 pm… Again for more details on these and swimming lessons click here.
  • City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Sumer Camps… Registration will close this Saturday (July 21st) for tackle football and cheerleading… Tackle football is open to youth 7-12 and cheerleading is open to youth 5-13… The cost for each is $50… you can register daily at The Ridge on 301 Exchange Drive and if you have any questions call 681-7275
  • PC Summer Sports Camps… This summer various sports at PC will be holding camps for various age groups of youth in the area… To see a complete listing of all the camps click here… The next camp is: 2018 Evening Day Soccer Camp… August 1 – 5, 2018. This camp is for youth ages 5-15 and is designed for player ability growth… Cost is $25 and it will be from 5PM – 8PM each day… For more information on this camp including registering online, click here….
