Local Notes:

Laurens Little League (B3) Majors All-Stars… In Stat Tournament at Taylors

  • Saturday: Northwood 9 – Laurens 4… The Laurens (B3) Majors opened up State Tournament play on Saturday facing off against the home standing Northwood Majors… Laurens jumped out to a 4-1 at the end of the 1st inning… Northwood tied the game in the top of the 2nd inning plating 3 runs… The score remained tied 4-4 for the next 6 innings when Northwood got on the board in the top of the 9th plating 5 runs on no hits, 7 walks and 1 Laurens error… As Coach Pridgen said after the game errors and walks (which figured into the scoring of all the Northwood runs) were a problem for Laurens as well as a few missed opportunities… Jaedon Goodwin had 3 of Laurens 6 hits in the game going 3-4 from the plate with a double and an RBI… To see the box score on the game, click here.
  • Sunday: Laurens 13 – Chester 3… Yesterday was a better day for the team as they defeated Chester 13-3 in just 5 innings… Both teams battled to a 3-3 tie at the end of 2 innings when the Laurens offense took over scoring 2 in the 3rd, 3 in the 4th and 5 in the 5th to win the game on the 10 run rule… Laurens pounded out 13 hits while Chester was held to just 2… EJ Grant led Laurens at the plate going 3-3, scoring 3 runs and drove in 2… To see the box score on the game, click here…. Laurens will take the field again this evening at 8 pm in another elimination game as they take on Darlington which eliminated Summerville yesterday by a score of 6-3.

Braves… The Braves were up in DC over the weekend for what was supposed to be a 3-game series with the Nationals.

  • Friday: Braves 8 – Nationals 5… The Braves started the second half of their season on a positive note Friday as they defeated the Nationals 8-5… The game was tied 2-2 going into the top of the 4th inning when they plated a run and then added 3 more in the 5th and never trailed again…. The Braves pounded out 12 hits in the game with Ronald Acuna Jr. and Charlie Culbertson both having solo homers.
  • Saturday… Mother Nature stepped in on Saturday as rain prevented the game from being played… It will, be made up on August 7th when the Braves again travel to DC.
  • Sunday: Nationals 6 – Braves 2… Yesterday the teams were able to get the game in despite a delay in starting and another delay during the game and the Nationals came back from their defeat on Friday to win the game 6-2… They took a 3-0 lead after the 1st inning and never trailed… They only outhit the Braves 15-14 but their hits were a little more timely…. Three different Braves had 3 hit each in the game and you can see who they were by clicking on the score at the start of this narrative… The Braves remain on the road as they travel to Miami to start a short 2-game series with the Marlins tonight.

 Drive… The Drive were up in Ashville over the weekend trying to complete their 4-game series with the Tourist that started last Thursday night with a 5-1 win over the Tourist.

  • Friday: Tourist 5 – Drive 4….The Tourist came back Friday and took a 5-4 win over the Drive… They scored 4 runs in the 6th inning and then held on to take the win.
  • Saturday: Drive 10 – Tourist 6… Saturday’s game saw the two teams hit 5 homeruns total and despite the Tourist having 3 of those 5 homers the Drive took a 10-6 win… The Drive used a 9 run 6th inning to power themselves to the win.
  • Sunday… Mother Nature stepped in and caused yesterday’s game to be postponed due to rain… The game will be made later this month… The Drive come home tonight to start a 4-game series with the Hickory Crawdads

Panthers… The Carolina Panthers will be reporting to Wofford College on Thursday, July 26th to start their annual training camp….  It starts with a Kickoff Party at Gibbs Stadium at 4 pm and the Panthers will have their first practice at 6:30 pm… Now to go to the Panthers website where you will find the training camp schedule, what not to bring, what you can bring and the answers to most any question you might have about the camp, click here.

 

LDHS

  • Free Softball Clinics on Mondays… Don’t forget that LDHS softball Coach Michaela Smith will conducting free softball clinics for girls in grades 2-6 on Monday nights to help the young ladies in District 55 improve their softball skills and learn the proper fundamentals in a fun environment… Come to the LDHS softball field starting at 7pm and the clinics will conclude at 8:30 pm…. Clinics are scheduled to run each Monday from now through at least the end of July.
  • Softball Tryouts… Coach Smith is also inviting any young lady in grades 7-12 who would like to come out for softball or just see if you might be interested to come to the workouts they are now having on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night between the hours of 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm at the LDHS softball field.
  • Cheerleading Kiddie Camp… Once again this year the LDHS Cheerleaders will be offering a Cheerleading Kiddie Camp on Saturday, August 4th in the Auxiliary Gym at LDHS… The camp will start at 9 am and conclude at noon and is open to youth ages 3-12… Instruction will be done by both JV and Varsity cheerleaders under the supervision of their coaches… There will be snacks, crafts and games as well as a T-shirt included in the $30 cost of the camp… Those who attend will give a performance at the end of the camp and on August 31st during the third quarter of the Raider football game with Myrtle Beach… Now for complete details on this camp, the registration form and contact information if you have further questions, click here.

  • Clinton YMCA Flag Football and Cheerleading… Registration is now open through August 17th for Flag Football and Cheerleading at the Clinton Family YMCA… Age groups will be 4 – 6, 7 – 9 and 10 – 12 for flag football and for grades K – 6 for cheerleading….
