Local Notes

CHS

  • Tennis at Home Today… The Lady Red Devil tennis team is scheduled to play the Dreher Lady Blue Devils today at 5:00 pm at the tennis courts on the campus of CMS.
  • JV Football at Laurens… The Clinton and Laurens JV football teams will start their season off today over at KC Hanna Stadium in round 1 of this weekend’s football action between Clinton and Laurens… Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm and we plan on bringing you that game here on Real Radio 860 WLBG and on the internet at www.wlbg.com going live just a few minutes before the game starts.

LDHS

  • VB: Laurens 3 – Ware Shoals 0… The Laurens Raider varsity volleyball teams picked up its first win of the season last night as it took a 3-0 win over the Ware Shoals Hornets at LDHS… The Raiders won by set scores of 25-11, 25-8 and 25-14… For more details on the match click here… The Raiders are back in action today as they travel to Clinton for both JV and varsity matches… The JVs will start at 5:30 and the varsity at 7:00….I want to encourage both Clinton and Laurens fans to come out and support the team.
  • Century Club Memberships Now on Sale… Century Club memberships for the coming school year are now on sale for Laurens County School District 55… This is the only way to get season football tickets for the upcoming season…  As a member you will receive two reserved seat football regular season tickets (for playoff games you will have to pay for the tickets – SCHSL Rules – but you will sit in your regular seat) , a reserved parking spot for the Century Club lot directly in front of KC Hanna Stadium. You will also receive two athletic passes, which allow you to attend all other regular season (NOT PLAYOFF) athletic contests (excluding varsity football) free of charge… As a Century Club member you may also purchase additional reserved seats football season tickets for $30 per seat… For those fans that enjoy tailgating before to each football game, The Century Club will continue offering the Touchdown Tailgate Zone… The Touchdown Tailgate Zone membership includes all of the privileges of a regular Century Club membership PLUS an additional reserved parking space and an area for you, your family, and friends to tailgate prior to each Raider home football game. The cost of the Touchdown Tailgate Zone is just an additional $50.   • Volleyball at Home Today… Both the middle school and varsity volleyball teams are scheduled to be in action today at Laurens Academy as they host Wardlaw starting about 5:00 pm… Please make plans to come out and support the Lady Crusaders.

College Notes

  • First AP Division Rankings Are Out… The first AP Rankings for D-I football came out early in the week and in case you missed it the top three teams are Alabama, Clemson and Georgia in that order… Alabama picked up 42 first place votes to Clemson’s 18…Wisconsin and Ohio State round out the top 5… Other ACC, SEC or area schools of note and their rankings are: Miami #8, Auburn #9, Notre Dame #12, Mississippi State #18, Florida State #19 and LSU # 25…. South Carolina just missed the top 26… To see the entire poll, click here.

  • Braves 2 – Pirates 1The Braves and the Pirates finished their 2 game series in Pittsburg last night and the Braves were able to sweep the series as they took a 2-1 win… Ronald Acuna Jr. started the game off with his 6th leadoff homer of the season and then the two teams settled into a pitcher’s duel between the Pirates Trevor Williams and the Braves Julio Teheran…  The Pirates tied it in the 5th inning but a sacrifice fly by Freddie Freeman drove in what would prove to be the winning run in the 8th inning… The Braves are now 71-55 on the season and lead the NL East by 3 games over the second place Phillies… They remain on the road as they travel to Miami to start a four-game series with the Marlins tonight.
  • Drive… The Drive were off last night and they will start a 4-game series down on the coast with the Charleston RiverDogs tonight… The Drive are 32-26 in the second half of their season and with just 12 regular games left they are in third place in the SAL Southern Division just 3 games behind the Lexington Legends who lead the division and who the Drive will play in the last 4 games of the regular season.

  • Laurens City Parks and Recreation Fall Ball… Registration is now open for fall baseball through the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation offices… There are 2 categories available… Coaches Pitch for Ages 6-8 and Kids Pitch for ages 9-11… Cost is $40… Registration is at their offices The Ridge located at 301 Exchange Drive and registration will close August 31st… For more information call 681-7275 or visit http://www.laurensrecreation.com/
  • Clinton-Newberry Tennis Association Mixed Double Tournament This Saturday… The Clinton-Laurens-Newberry Tennis Association will hold its annual Mixed Doubles Round Robin Tournament Saturday, August 25th, at Laurens City Park from 9:00 to 12:00…Each player will play three sets with a different mixed doubles partner, against different mixed doubles competition…. There will be two divisions: (1) 2.5 & 3.5 and (2) 3.5 & 4.0… Play will be limited to 20 participants, so be sure to sign-up early… The fee is only ten dollars per player… However, please register before the deadline… (Donations to our non-profit organization will, of course, be appreciated.)… Prizes will be awarded to winners in both divisions… To sign-up, email Martha (mbjwilder@gmail.com), Subject Line: August Round Robin Registration, or call Martha (864-340-1888) with your name, your phone number, and the division you wish to play in by the deadline, Thursday, August 23rd
  • The Laurens County Touchdown Club has a full set of meetings scheduled to help celebrate high school football in Laurens County… The Club meets every other Friday at The Ridge with the meetings starting at noon… For more information about the TD Club including schedule, how to join and videos of the past meetings click here… The next meeting will be Friday, August 24th where the featured speakers will be the local high school coaches.
  • Free Softball Clinics on Mondays… Don’t forget that LDHS softball Coach Michaela Smith will conducting free softball clinics for girls in grades 2-6 on Monday nights to help the young ladies in District 55 improve their softball skills and learn the proper fundamentals in a fun environment… Come to the LDHS softball field starting at 7pm and the clinics will conclude about 8:00 pm…. Clinics are scheduled to run each Monday from now through at least the end of August
  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… The current sports you can sign up for now are fall soccer and flag football… Early registration ended August 10th but you can still register until August 27th it will just cost you a little more to do so.
