Local Notes

LDHS… The Laurens Raider volleyball teams traveled to Greenville last night to take on the Wade Hampton Generals.

  • V: WH 3 – Laurens 0… In varsity action, the Raiders and the Generals traded points back and forth in the early part of the first set but the Generals got some momentum and won the first set 25-21… They then carried that momentum into the second and third sets taking 25-10 and 25-16 wins to take the match 3-0….   • JV: WH 2 – Laurens 0…  In JV action the Generals took a 2-0 win over the Raiders… The Generals took a one-sided 25-6 win in the first set but the Raiders fought back in the second set only to fall 29-27 in a comeback that fell just short… For more information on this match including comment from the coach, click here… The teams will be back in action tomorrow as they host Greenwood in JV & varsity action starting at 5:30

Laurens Academy… The Laurens Academy Crusader volleyball teams hosted the Cougars of Cambridge Academy yesterday and the results were as follows.

  • Varsity: LA3 – CA 2… In varsity action, the Crusaders took a come from behind 3-2 win over the Cougars to run their season record to 2-1… The Cougars took the first set 25-22 but the Crusaders battled back to take the second set 25-23…. Cambridge then forged ahead by taking a 25-20 win in the third set… The Crusaders came back in the fourth set to take a one-sided 25-15 win and continued that into the fifth and final set taking a 15-3 win to claim the match victory.
  • JV: LA 2 – CA 0… In action prior to the varsity, the new LA JV volleyball team took a 2-0 win over the Cougars by set scores of 25-4 and 25-11.
  • MS: LA 2 – CA 0…. The middle school team was also in action and I can tell you that they took a 2-0 win over the Cougars thus giving the Crusaders a sweep of the Cougars on the night… They took the first set 25-20 but I do not know what the second set score was… The Crusader volleyball teams will travel to Anderson Christian tomorrow afternoon.

Middle School

  • Jamboree Today… The four Laurens District 55 middle schools will be holding their annual jamboree at KC Hanna Stadium today at 5:00 pm at KC Hanna Stadium… Gray Court-Owings will be taking on Laurens Middle School and Hickory Tavern will be taking on Sanders in a half of football… The action starts at 5:00 so make plans to come out and get a glimpse of the future Raiders.

  • Braves 9 – Rays 5…  The Atlanta Braves used a 4-run eighth inning to get past the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 9-5 in the opening game of a 2-game series in Atlanta last night… In the big 8th inning Tyler Flowers had a two-run homer (6) and Ender Inciarte had a solo shot (9) for the Braves.
  • Braves 2 – Drive 1… The Greenville Drives started their last road series of the season last night down in Rome , Ga with the Rome Braves… The Drives scored a run in the top of the first inning but they could not make that hold up as the Baby Braves had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 9th ining to take a walk-off 2-1 win over the Drive.

  • Century Club Memberships Now on Sale… Century Club memberships for the coming school year are now on sale for Laurens County School District 55… This is the only way to get season football tickets for the upcoming season…  As a member you will receive two reserved seat football regular season tickets (for playoff games you will have to pay for the tickets – SCHSL Rules – but you will sit in your regular seat) , a reserved parking spot for the Century Club lot directly in front of KC Hanna Stadium. You will also receive two athletic passes, which allow you to attend all other regular season (NOT PLAYOFF) athletic contests free of charge… As a Century Club member you may also purchase additional reserved seats football season tickets for $30 per seat… For those fans that enjoy tailgating before to each football game, The Century Club will continue offering the Touchdown Tailgate Zone… The Touchdown Tailgate Zone membership includes all of the privileges of a regular Century Club membership PLUS an additional reserved parking space and an area for you, your family, and friends to tailgate prior to each Raider home football game.   • Laurens City Parks and Recreation Fall Ball… Registration is now open for fall baseball through the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation offices… There are 2 categories available… Coaches Pitch for Ages 6-8 and Kids Pitch for ages 9-11… Cost is $40… Registration is at their offices The Ridge located at 301 Exchange Drive and registration will close August 31st… For more information call 681-7275 or visit
  • The Laurens County Touchdown Club has a full set of meetings scheduled to help celebrate high school football in Laurens County… The Club meets every other Friday at The Ridge with the meetings starting at noon… For more information about the TD Club including schedule, how to join and videos of the past meetings click here… The next meeting will be Friday, September 7th where the featured speaker will be Shell Dula, Executive Director of the SC Athletic Coaches Assoc.
  • Free Softball Clinics on Mondays… Don’t forget that LDHS softball Coach Michaela Smith will conducting free softball clinics for girls in grades 2-6 on Monday nights to help the young ladies in District 55 improve their softball skills and learn the proper fundamentals in a fun environment… Come to the LDHS softball field starting at 7pm and the clinics will conclude about 8:00 pm…. Clinics are scheduled to run each Monday from now through at least the end of August
