Local Notes

CHS… The Red Devil volleyball teams hosted the Broome Centurions last Thursday night.

  • V: Broome 3 – Clinton 1… In varsity action the Centurions took a 3-1 win… They won the first two sets by scores of 25-19 and 25-15… The Red Devils rebounded to take the third set 25-11 but just could no keep the momentum going as Broome took the fourth set by a score of 25-19
  • JV: Broome 2 – Clinton 0… In JV action prior to the varsity, Broom took a 2-0 win… Set scores were 25-21 and 25-19… The Red Devils volleyball teams travel to Ninety Six today to take on the Wildcats.



Volleyball… The Laurens Raider volleyball teams were also in action last Thursday as they hosted the Greenwood Eagles in region action.

  • V: Laurens 3 – Greenwood 0… There is good news in varsity action as the Raiders picked up a region win defeating Greenwood 3-0… Set scored were 26-24, 25-14 & 25-14… For more details on the match and comments from Coach Fleming, click here.
  • JV: Greenwood 2 – Laurens 0… Now the news is not as good where the JV team is concerned as the Raiders fell to the Eagles 2-0… Set scores were 25-17 & 25-20… Again for more information and comments from Coach Fleming on this match click here… The teams return to action today as they host the Westside Rams starting at 5:30.

Boys Cross Country… The Laurens boys cross country team finished 39th out of 57 teams in the Championship Division of Saturday’s Eye Opener. The Raiders were led by freshman Evan Prince who finished 15th with a time of 17:30. Prince was followed by Raider teammates Jackson Edwards, Murphy Rush, Jaden Rice and Zach Brown. Two Raiders, Murphy Rush and Andrew Jewell, had personal records. The JV boys were led my Matthias Betteger.

Laurens Academy

The Laurens Academy Crusader cross country teams took part in the Milliken Eye Opener Race last Saturday.. There were over 3,000 participants in this year’s race.

Girls: The Crusaders finished 43rd out of 45 teams participating:

  • Red Sox 8 – Braves 2… The Braves started a 3-game series with the Boston Red Sox in Atlanta last night on a sour note as the Boston took an 8-2 win… The Red Sox only outhit the Braves 10-8 but were aided by 6 walks and got their hits at the most opportune time… Ozzie Albies did have a solo homer (22) fir the Braves in the 6th inning.
  • Drive 6 – Lexington 4… The Greenville Drive saw their season come to an end last night but it did end on a positive note as they took a 6-4 win over the Lexington Legends at Flor Field… The Drive finished the 2nd half of their season 1 game behind the Legends who won the SAL Southern Division thus just missing the playoffs… The Drive finished the 2nd half of their season with a 39-31 record after going 25-44 in the first half of the season where they were in last place in the SAL Southern Division.

  • Clinton Family YMCA Youth Soccer… Registration is now open for youth soccer at the Clinton Family YMCA… The YMCA will offer the following age groups/playing divisions: 3 – 5, 6 – 8 and 9 – 12… Registration fees are $50.00 for Y members; and $65.00 for Non-members… Financial Aid and assistance is available… The YMCA will not deny anyone the opportunity to participate in its youth sports activities….   • The Laurens County Touchdown Club has a full set of meetings scheduled to help celebrate high school football in Laurens County… The Club meets every other Friday at The Ridge with the meetings starting at noon… For more information about the TD Club including schedule, how to join and videos of the past meetings click here… The next meeting will be Friday, September 7th where the featured speaker will be Shell Dula, Executive Director of the SC Athletic Coaches Assoc.
  • Free Softball Clinics on Mondays… Don’t forget that LDHS softball Coach Michaela Smith will conducting free softball clinics for girls in grades 2-6 on Monday nights to help the young ladies in District 55 improve their softball skills and learn the proper fundamentals in a fun environment… Come to the LDHS softball field starting at 7pm and the clinics will conclude about 8:00 pm…. Clinics are scheduled to run each Monday from now through at least the end of September
  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration will open September 17th for Fall Teeball and Fall Softball… Registration for both will end on October 21st and there will be NO late registration….
