Hurricane Florence Causes Athletic Schedule Changes

With a major hurricane brewing off the coast of South Carolina many athletic events are being played early, later, moved or cancelled altogether. Below is a rundown of what we have learned so far and as more information becomes available we will be updating this list.

High School Football:

  • Clinton will host Wren at 7:30 Thursday (9-13-18)
  • Laurens will host Wade Hampton at 7:00 pm Thursday
  • Laurens Academy will host WW King at 7:00 pm Thursday
  • Ware Shoals will host Camden Military at 7:30 on Monday (9-17-18).

The CHS JV football game at Wilder Stadium has been postponed as well as the CMS 8th grade football game that was supposed to held there this afternoon with Newberry.

The South Carolina High School League does have a message from Jerome Singleton the SCHSL Director and a list of football schedule changes on their website. To go directly to that posting on their website, click here.

College Football:

  • Presbyterian College: PC has had second thoughts about traveling to DeLand Florida to play Stetson and has now canceled the game. Their concern is getting the team back safely after Hurricane Florence’s track changed. PC will host Bluefield College next Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 7:00 pm.
  • Clemson: The Clemson vs. Georgia Southern kickoff has been moved up to noon. No information on whether that game will be broadcast on TV.
  • South Carolina: Gamecock Athletic Director Ray Tanner has announced that the home game with Marshall scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled. They did this after the latest forecast showed the potential for greater impact on South Carolina. This will help free up motel rooms and resources need for the situation. South Carolina will try to find a 12th regular season game perhaps on their open date.
  • Furman: Furman has canceled their game with Colgate Saturday and it will not be made up. They will be looking at options to find an opponent for their open week (Oct. 6).
  • Citadel: The Citadel – Charleston Southern game has been rescheduled for November 29th at Johnson Hagood stadium with a 7:00 pm kickoff. The game is contingent on neither team qualifying for the FCS playoffs.
  • Wofford: No change in schedule as they will fly out to Wyoming ahead of the storm.
  • SC State: The ESPN televised matchup featuring North Carolina Central at South Carolina State on Saturday, Sept. 15 has been postponed due to the weather threat posed by Hurricane Florence and the State of Emergency for the states of North Carolina and South Carolina. The contest has been rescheduled for Saturday, Nov. 24 in Orangeburg, S.C.
