Local Notes


  • Pendleton 39 – Clinton 6… A slow start and big plays doomed the Clinton Red Devils to a 39-6 loss to the Pendleton Bulldogs last Friday up at Pendleton… The Bulldogs scored 3 of the first 4 times they had the ball and more often than not throughout the night it was the big play they scored on… The Bulldogs scored on all 3 of their trips into the Red Zone while the Red Devils managed that on only 1 of 4 trips into the Red Zone… The Red Devils lone score came with 9:57 left in the game on a 2 yard run by Darian Bailey that capped a 7 play 72 yard drive… The Bulldogs had 508 yards of total offense with 257 of that coming on the ground… The Red Devils managed 266 yards with 179 of that coming on the ground… The Red Devils were hampered on offense by an injury to Konnor Richardson’s no-throwing arm late in the first half…  To see a quick version of the stats click here … To see a play-by-play accounting of the game click here ….The Red Devils start region play this Friday as they travel to Union County to take on the Yellow Jackets.



  • Greenwood 28 – Laurens 17… Last Friday the Raiders crossed Lake Greenwood to take on the Greenwood Eagles in their 2nd region game of the season… The Raiders got the ball first and scored on a 41 yard pass from Shamare Dendy to Jordan Woodruff to cap a 66 yard drive… Devon Hubner added the PAT and the Raiders went up 7-0… Greenwood responded immediately with a score of their own to make it 7-7… The Eagles scored again a few possessions later and the Raiders responded with a drive that ended in Hubner kicking a 44 yard field goal to make it 14-10… Greenwood scored once more before the half to make it 21-10 at the half… The Raiders scored first in the second half on a 1 yard run by Ryan Campbell and with Hubner’s PAT cut the lead to 21-17… The Eagles countered with a score of their next possession to stretch the lead to 28-17… The Raiders looked like they were headed for a score again early in the 4th quarter but fumbled at the Eagle 4 yard line where the Eagles recovered the ball… After forcing the Eagles to punt the Raiders started another drive only to fumble again this time at their own 45 yard line… After that, neither team managed a score… The Eagles had 348 yards of total offense with 234 of them through the air while the Raiders managed 235 yards of offense with 177 of them coming on the ground… To see a quick version of the stats click here … To see a play-by-play accounting of the game click here …. Laurens Academy

  • Crusaders 52 – Calhoun Academy 32…. The Laurens Academy Crusaders were the only county team to pick up a win this past Friday night as they defeated the Calhoun Academy Cavaliers 53-32 at Todd Kirk Field to pick up their second win in as many games… The game started out relatively slow as the Cavaliers got on the board first but the Crusaders did score on a Thomas Lowry TD run and the 2-point pass to Dawson Foster to make it 8-8 which is where the score stood at the end of the first quarter… Lowry again scored on a TD run in the second quarter and connected with Foster for the 2-point conversion to tie the game at 16 all… Lowry later connected with Cal Robertson on a 56 yard scoring strike to make it 24-16… The Cavaliers added another score themselves and the score stood 24-22 at the half… The Crusaders put the first points on the scoreboard in the third quarter on a Lowry to McCall shovel pass and Cal Robertson caught the 2-point conversion to make it 32-24… The Cavaliers then scored what would prove to be their last TD of the night to tie the game at 32 all… From there on out it was all Crusaders as they got a few defensive stops a fumble recovery or two… Charlton McCall came in to play quarterback for a short while and scored on a keeper and with the 2-point conversion (Lowry to Foster) made it 40-32 and the Crusaders never trailed again… Lowry completed two more shuttle passes to McCall for scores as the game wound up 52-32… The Crusaders travel to Clarendon Hall this Friday.


Ware Shoals

  • Great Falls 36 – Ware Shoals 30 in 5 OT… The Ware Shoals Hornets and the Great Falls Red Devils fought to a 12-12 tie at the endo of regulation only to have the Hornets fall 36-30 in 5 overtimes.

Braves…  As you may recall the Braves started a 4-game series with the Phillies in Atlanta last Thursday night with an 8-3 win. .. Catching up with the rest of the series you find:

  • Friday: Braves 6 – Phillies 5… On Friday the Braves scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning and then went on to take a 6-5 comeback win to reduce their magic number to just 2 games to eliminate the Phillies and clinch the NL East.
  • Saturday: Braves 5 – Phillies 3… On Saturday the Braves did something they have not done since 2013 and that is win the NL East as they took a 5-3 win to eliminate the second place Phillies from the race.
  • Sunday: Braves 2 – Phillies 1… On Sunday the Braves closed out the 4-game series with the Phillies with a 2-1 win which gave them a sweep of the series… Lane Adams went 3-3 to lead the Braves and one of his hits was a solo homer in the 5th inning… The Braves have now completed the last of their regular season home games and will finish out the season on the road starting with a series tomorrow in New York with the Mets.

  • Clinton Family YMCA Youth Soccer… Registration is now open for youth soccer at the Clinton Family YMCA… The YMCA will offer the following age groups/playing divisions: 3 – 5, 6 – 8 and 9 – 12… Registration fees are $50.00 for Y members; and $65.00 for Non-members… Financial Aid and assistance is available… The YMCA will not deny anyone the opportunity to participate in its youth sports activities….   • The Laurens County Touchdown Club has a full set of meetings scheduled to help celebrate high school football in Laurens County… The Club meets every other Friday at The Ridge with the meetings starting at noon… For more information about the TD Club including schedule, how to join and videos of the past meetings click here… The next meeting will be Friday, October 5th when the featured speaker will be Gary Patterson, ACC Official and Referee.
  • A Team of 1,000” Fundraising Campaign… Laurens District 55 High School (LDHS) with the support of Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) is launching a Team of 1,000 athletic fundraising campaign. LDHS hopes to raise $55,000 to contribute towards the wishes of the athletic programs. Any funds raised will not supplant existing funding from LCSD 55 but we want to enhance the pride and possibilities inherent in our athletic programs… The funds raised will go toward ensuring adequate resources for travel to camps, scrimmages, and other activities that improve student-athlete performance but may stretch the regular season travel budget… The different coaches are compiling a “wish list” of items they would like to see the monies go toward… If you would like you to be a part of our Team of 1,000. Just a $55 gift from each member of our Team of 1,000 will help us reach our goal of $55,000. By donating to the Team of 1,000 fundraising campaign, you are helping the student-athlete experience; you are also joining many others in a commitment to athletic excellence in Laurens….   • Free Softball Clinics on Mondays… Don’t forget that LDHS softball Coach Michaela Smith will conducting free softball clinics for girls in grades 2-6 on Monday nights to help the young ladies in District 55 improve their softball skills and learn the proper fundamentals in a fun environment… Come to the LDHS softball field starting at 7pm and the clinics will conclude about 8:00 pm…. Clinics are scheduled to run each Monday from now through at least the end of September
  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration will open September 17th for Fall Teeball and Fall Softball… Registration for both will end on October 21st and there will be NO late registration….
