Local Notes


  • Union 62 – Clinton 7… The CHS Red Devils traveled over to Union last Friday to open region play taking on the Yellow Jacket s… Union struck first, quick and often as they scored 62 unanswered points before the Red Devils finally scored with 2:34 left in the game to make the final score 62-7… The Yellow Jacket s scored 3 of the 4 times they had the ball in the first quarter and 9 of the 12 times they had the ball in the game not counting their last possession which occurs as time ran out in the game… At times the Red Devils were their own worst emery as they fumbled 6 times in the game losing 5 of them… The Red Devils lone score came on a 1 yard run by Navill Watson to cap a 15 play 46 yard drive with Sam Tiller adding the PAT….   • Westside 66 – Laurens 21… The Laurens Raiders were also on the road Friday night as they traveled to Anderson to take on the Westside Rams…. The Raiders actually led 14-10 at the end of the first quarter but after that it was all downhill for the Raiders as the Rams reeled off 56 unanswered points before the Raiders could get on the board again as the Raiders fell 66-21… As in recent weeks two things hurt the Raiders: turnovers and the opponents’ air attack… The Raiders had 6 fumbles losing 3 of them pus an interception… The Rams had 427 of their total 620 yards through the air… The Raiders managed just 293 yards of total offense with 182 of them coming on the ground… Shamare Dendy was the leading rusher for the Raiders with 79 yards on 13 rushes with one of the rushes being 52 yards. Laurens scored on a 1 yard YTD run by Duane Martin, a 1 yard TD run by Jackson Mahon and a 59 yard TD pass from Ryan Campbell to Jordan Woodruff with Devon Hubner adding all 3 PATs… To see some statistics on the game click here and to see a play-by-play accounting of the game click here. 


Laurens Academy

  • Game Canceled… Due to injuries and illness, the Laurens Crusader’s game last Friday night was canceled.


Whitmire @ Ware Shoals

  • Whitmire 35 – Ware Shoals 6… The Whitmire Wolverines traveled to ware Shoals to take on the Hornets in the first game of region action for both teams… The score stood 7-6 Whitmire after a quarter of play but then the Wolverines went on to score 28 unanswered points to take a 35-6 win… Jermarious Goodwin had eh Hornets lone score while Chandler Crumley & Jaylen Brown had TDs for the Wolverines…

Braves….   The Braves completed their regular season this weekend with a 3-game series in Philadelphia with the Phillies

  • Friday: Braves 10 – Phillies 2… On Friday the Braves pounded out 19 hits while Braves pitchers limited the Phillies to just 4 hits as the Braves took a 10-2 win over the Phillies… One of the Braves huts was a solo homer by Johan Camargo which gives him 19 on the season
  • Phillies 3 – Braves 0… On Saturday the Phillies broke a 9-game losing streak by taking a 3-0 win over the Braves… The Phillies simply outhit the Braves 5-2 as they scored all 5 of their runs in the 7th inning.
  • Sunday: Phillies 3 – Braves 1… In the final game of the regular season the Phillies downed the Braves 3-1 thus taking the final series win 2 games to 1…  The Phillies scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 1st inning then held on to take the win.
  • Playoff Bound… The Braves finished the season with a 90-72 record and finished first in the NL East 8 games ahead of the second place Phillies… They will be on the road Thursday taking on the winner Rockies at the Dodgers tiebreaker today at 4 pm ET….   • The Laurens County Touchdown Club has a full set of meetings scheduled to help celebrate high school football in Laurens County… The Club meets every other Friday at The Ridge with the meetings starting at noon… For more information about the TD Club including schedule, how to join and videos of the past meetings click here… The next meeting will be Friday, October 5th when the featured speaker will be Gary Patterson, ACC Official and Referee.
  • A Team of 1,000” Fundraising Campaign… Laurens District 55 High School (LDHS) with the support of Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) is launching a Team of 1,000 athletic fundraising campaign. LDHS hopes to raise $55,000 to contribute towards the wishes of the athletic programs. Any funds raised will not supplant existing funding from LCSD 55 but we want to enhance the pride and possibilities inherent in our athletic programs… The funds raised will go toward ensuring adequate resources for travel to camps, scrimmages, and other activities that improve student-athlete performance but may stretch the regular season travel budget… The different coaches are compiling a “wish list” of items they would like to see the monies go toward… If you would like you to be a part of our Team of 1,000. Just a $55 gift from each member of our Team of 1,000 will help us reach our goal of $55,000. By donating to the Team of 1,000 fundraising campaign, you are helping the student-athlete experience; you are also joining many others in a commitment to athletic excellence in Laurens….   • Free Softball Clinics on Mondays… Don’t forget that LDHS softball Coach Michaela Smith will conducting free softball clinics for girls in grades 2-6 on Monday nights to help the young ladies in District 55 improve their softball skills and learn the proper fundamentals in a fun environment… Come to the LDHS softball field starting at 7pm and the clinics will conclude about 8:00 pm…. Clinics are scheduled to run each Monday from now through at least the end of October
  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration will open September 17th for Fall Teeball and Fall Softball… Registration for both will end on October 21st and there will be NO late registration….
