Sports Report for Thursday, 10-11-2018

Hurricane Michael Causes Postponements and Cancellations… Well as you know school is out today in Laurens Districts 55 & 56 and that means there will be no athletic contest today involving teams from either district and all athletic contest yesterday afternoon and night were also postponed or canceled outright… Laurens Academy is also out of school today so there will be no athletic contests involving the Crusaders today… Be sure to check back on Monday and I will update you on any make-up dates that I find out about between now and then… The weather is expected to move through the area today and start clearing tonight so as of this moment, I do not expect the weather to have any effect on games scheduled for tomorrow but be sure to check back tomorrow morning for any update on that.


Local Notes

CHS   Cross Country… The Red Devil cross country teams participated in the Pre-Region Meet earlier this week.

  • Boys… Good news where the boys are concerned as they finished first with the lowest score of 28… The top runner for the Red Devils was Eric Newton who had the lowest overall time for any boy at the meet finishing the course in 17:42… The Red Devils had 4 of the top 10 runners and 6 or the top 15… To see who they were and their times click here.
  • Girls… The girls’ team did not finish first but pretty close to it as they came in third… They had two runners in the top 10 with Page Trent finishing 4th overall with a time of 23:25… To see how the rest of the girls on the team did, click here…. Now please mark your calendar for next Tuesday, October 10th because that is when the Red Devils will be hosting the Region Meet starting at 5:00 pm and I am sure they would like to see a large number of Red Devil fans there to cheer them on…. Go Big Red.


  • Broome 3 – Clinton 0… In volleyball action that I just received the results on yesterday, the Red Devil volleyball teams traveled to Spartanburg on Tuesday to take on the Centurions of Broome HS… The Red Devils fell to the Centurions 3-0 in varsity action with 2 o the 3 set scores being close… The set scores were 25-20, 25-13 & 25-21.
  • JV: Broome 2 – Clinton 0… In action prior to the varsity, the Centurions were also victorious by a score of 2-0… Set scores were 25-10 & 25-17.



Raider Varsity Volleyball… Also catching up with the Raider varsity volleyball team which traveled to TL Hanna back on Tuesday to participate in a tri-match with Hanna and Easley:

  • Easley 2 – Laurens 1… In their match against the Easley Green Wave the Raiders fell by a score of 2-1… Easley took the first set 25-19 but the Raiders rebounded to take the second set 25-17… In the third and deciding set the Green Wave edged the Raiders by a score of 25-21… For comment from Coach Fleming and more details on the match click here.
  • Hanna 2 – Laurens 0… In the other half of the tri-match, the Raiders fell to a very tough TL Hanna team by a score of 2-0… Set scores were 25-12 and 25-2.
  • JV Action… The JV team also traveled to TL Hanna to participate in the tri-match on Tuesday… The team lost both of its matches against Hanna and Easley by the same score which was 2-0… For details on the Easley match click here and for details on their match with Hanna click here.

League Championship Teams Set… Well in case you missed it, the four teams still in the running for the MLB Championship have been set… In the American League the Houston Astros defeated the Cleveland Indians in 3 games and will face the Boston Red Sox who defeated the Yankees 3 games to 1… They will not start their best of 7 series until Saturday night in Boston… In the National League the punched their ticket to the league championship series by beating the Braves 3 game to 1 while the Milwaukie Brewers got there by defeating the Colorado Rockies in 3 straight games… They will start their best of 7 series for the championship tomorrow night in Milwaukie… To see the complete postseason schedule and results, click here.

  • Friday – 10-12-18 – Laurens travels to JL Mann in an important region contest if the Raiders want to make the playoffs.… Friday Night Insiders about 6:06 and live about 6:35… Greenville is a tough place to find a vacant frequency but if you carry your FM radio you should be able to hear our in-stadium transmitter on 87.9, 88.9 or 106.7 on you FM dial I will have to see which one is best when I get there.

  • The Laurens County Touchdown Club has a full set of meetings scheduled to help celebrate high school football in Laurens County… The Club meets every other Friday at The Ridge with the meetings starting at noon… For more information about the TD Club including schedule, how to join and videos of the past meetings click here… The next meeting will be Friday, October 19th when the featured speaker will be Hunter Reid Associate AD / SID at Furman University. .
  • A Team of 1,000” Fundraising Campaign… Laurens District 55 High School (LDHS) with the support of Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) is launching a Team of 1,000 athletic fundraising campaign. LDHS hopes to raise $55,000 to contribute towards the wishes of the athletic programs. Any funds raised will not supplant existing funding from LCSD 55 but we want to enhance the pride and possibilities inherent in our athletic programs… The funds raised will go toward ensuring adequate resources for travel to camps, scrimmages, and other activities that improve student-athlete performance but may stretch the regular season travel budget… The different coaches are compiling a “wish list” of items they would like to see the monies go toward… If you would like you to be a part of our Team of 1,000. Just a $55 gift from each member of our Team of 1,000 will help us reach our goal of $55,000. By donating to the Team of 1,000 fundraising campaign, you are helping the student-athlete experience; you are also joining many others in a commitment to athletic excellence in Laurens….   • Free Softball Clinics on Mondays… Don’t forget that LDHS softball Coach Michaela Smith will conducting free softball clinics for girls in grades 2-6 on Monday nights to help the young ladies in District 55 improve their softball skills and learn the proper fundamentals in a fun environment… Come to the LDHS softball field starting at 7pm and the clinics will conclude about 8:00 pm…. Clinics are scheduled to run each Monday from now through at least the end of October
  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration will open September 17th for Fall Teeball and Fall Softball… Registration for both will end on October 21st and there will be NO late registration….
