Clinton Getting Automated Garbage Truck

An automated garbage collection truck is coming to Clinton. At Clinton City Council’s November meeting Monday evening, City Manager Bill Ed Cannon asked council to approve the purchase of a “New Way” Automated Side Loader Refuse Truck. It’s being purchased from Amick Equipment Company of Lexington, South Carolina for a total sale price of $264,438.92.

Mr. Cannon explained that, with council approval, the city would make a $30,000 down payment during fiscal year 2019 with the remaining balance financed by a 5-year Municipal Lease Purchase Agreement.

The truck, Mr. Cannon said, would allow the city to reduce the number of employees dedicated to garbage collection from 3 to just 1. He clarified that no one would lose a job because “there’s plenty for those other 2 guys to do”. He said those employees would now be able to accomplish some tasks that have sometimes gone undone.

The bid from Amick was actually nearly $3,000 higher than the low bid but Mr. Cannon explained that head of the Sanitation Division believed this truck to be superior for the city’s needs and asked that the bid be accepted.

After discussion, Council approved the purchase by a unanimous vote.
