Sports Report for Thursday, 11-8-2018

Local Notes:

  • Winter Sports Meet the Devils (CMS and CHS Basketball Teams)… On Monday November 26th at 6:00 pm the winter version of Meet the Devils will place in the CHS Main Gym… This will be the first opportunity for Red Devil fans to meet the players and coaches of not only the basketball teams at CHS but also the coaches and players of the CMS Wildcat teams… Go ahead and make plans to come on out that Monday.
  • Fall Sports Athletic Banquet… The following night on Tuesday November 27th CHS will be having its Fall Athletic banquet also at 6:00 pm but in the CHS Auditorium instead of the gym… There is a $2 per person fee for the banquet except for the athletes who get in free… Again go ahead and make plans to come out and celebrate the fall athletes who are standouts in their sport.

  • Fan Bus to Rock Hill… There will be a fan bus going to Rock Hill this Friday for Raider fans who don’t want to make the drive over… The bus will be leaving from in front of the high school at 5:45 and the cost to ride will be $5… Once you get to the game you will still have to purchase your game ticket which will cost $8… If you drive over yourself it will cost more than $5 in gas (unless you have an electric or hybrid car) so this is a way not only to save some money but have a little fun with other Raider fans also.
  • Raider Football Broadcast… Our next Laurens varsity football broadcast will be either Thursday night 11-8-18 or Friday 11-9-18 when Laurens travels to Rock Hill to take on the Bearcats of Rock Hill in first round action of the Class AAAAA playoffs… We will start about 6:35 with Doug Holiday calling the game and Mike Hughes adding his analysis of the game… Coach Rob Sheffield will report from the sideline…Our FM in-stadium transmitter will be set to one of the following depending on which I find is best when I get there: 95.7 or 101.9… And as usual you can hear it live on the internet at

High School Football Notes

  • Final SC High School Football Media Poll… The SC Media High School Football Poll came out a couple of days ago and it will be the final one of the season as the playoffs start tomorrow… In Class 5A two undefeated teams are first and second and they are Dutch Fork and TL Hanna in that order… Of course as fans in this area know Hanna is a region foe of Laurens… Spots 3 & 4 are held by Gaffney and Dorman… The Raiders opponent tomorrow night (Rock Hill) did not make the top ten in Class 5A… In Class 4A Hartsville and Greer are the top two teams in that order… BHP checks in at #4 and Myrtle Beach who the Raiders lost to this season comes in at #5… In Class 3A Dillon is #1 and Chapman #2… Clinton’s region foes Union County and Woodruff check in at #6 & #7 respectively… In Class 2A it’s no surprise that Abbeville is ranked #1… In Class A Lamar is rankled #1 and Dixie checks in at #3… If you would like to see the top 10 in each of the classes click here.
  • Some Playoff Games Tonight… The treat of bad weather Friday night has caused some area team to go ahead and play their first round playoff games tonight… Start times will be 7:30 unless noted differently…  The ones I know about are: Andrew Jackson at Abbeville (6:00), Eastside at Daniel (7:00), Chesnee at Union County (7:00), Silver Bluff at Southside Christian, Central at Landrum and Greenwood at Dorman.

College Sports:

  • DI Men’s AP Basketball Ranking … With men’s college basketball kicking off the new season the last couple of days I thought I’d remind you of the pre-season AP Poll for DI Men’s Basketball… The poll had Kansas, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Duke and Virginia holding down the top 5 spots in that order… Sots 6-10 are occupied by Tennessee, Nevada, North Carolina, Villanova and Michigan State… Clemson came in at #22 in the preseason poll… Now we ought to file the poll away and see how accurate it was when March Madness rolls around… If you would like to see the entire top 25 in the preseason AP Poll, click here.

  • Panther Play Tonight… A quick reminder for the casual Carolina Panther Fans; the Panthers will be traveling to Pittsburg tonight to take on the Steelers… The game can be on WHNS-TV, Channel 21 and kickoff is slated for a few minutes after 8:00 pm.

  • A Team of 1,000” Fundraising Campaign… Laurens District 55 High School (LDHS) with the support of Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) is launching a Team of 1,000 athletic fundraising campaign. LDHS hopes to raise $55,000 to contribute towards the wishes of the athletic programs. Any funds raised will not supplant existing funding from LCSD 55 but we want to enhance the pride and possibilities inherent in our athletic programs… The funds raised will go toward ensuring adequate resources for travel to camps, scrimmages, and other activities that improve student-athlete performance but may stretch the regular season travel budget… The different coaches are compiling a “wish list” of items they would like to see the monies go toward… If you would like you to be a part of our Team of 1,000. Just a $55 gift from each member of our Team of 1,000 will help us reach our goal of $55,000. By donating to the Team of 1,000 fundraising campaign, you are helping the student-athlete experience; you are also joining many others in a commitment to athletic excellence in Laurens…. For more information on this including how you can join the team, click here… Please consider joining, I have.
