Local Notes:

Laurens at Clinton Basketball… Last Friday night the Raiders traveled to Clinton to take on the Red Devils in Round I of the County Championships for this season.

  • Girls: Clinton 48 – Laurens 43… The girls game was a hard fought back and forth affair that saw the Red Devils take a 48-42 win over the Raisers… Clinton jumped out to a 14-6 lead after 1 quarter of play but the Raiders fought back to cut the Red Devil lead to 21-20 at the half… The 3rd was an even battle as Clinton led 33-32 going into the final quarter of play…  In the final quarter the Raider’s offense went cold but did score 6 of their 11 points from the free-throw line in the quarter while Clinton was able to score but missed pulling even further away by missing all 8 of their free-throw attempts in the quarter… As a matter of fact missed free-throws were a problem for the ref Devils all night long…Clinton led by Terriauna with a 17 points while Payton Price-Walker 14 & De’Shanti Watts had 12… Taneal Evans and Dana Kinard finished with 2 points each while Tinique Austin had 1…. Laurens’ Diamond Pressley only Raider in double-digits with 17 points… Others scoring for the Raiders were Qua Fortson 9, Raniya Jackson 6, Mikajia Moore 6, Kenaja Burnside, Aija Davis 2 and Precious Grant 1…Clinton improves to 4-0 on the season while the Raiders fall top 1-3
  • Boys: Laurens 65 – Clinton 60… The boys game was a back and forth game that was to say the least “physical” as the refs let them bang on each other somewhat more than normal… Laurens led by 1 (13-12) at end of the 1st quarter but the Red Devils came back to take a 2 point lead (29-27) at the half… It was more of the same in the 3rd quarter as the teams battled to a 42-42 tie….In the decisive 4th quarter Amaija Hill had 9 of his 15 points and JD Payne tried to keep the Red Devils in it by scoring 12 of his 27 points…. However Clinton missed 5 free-throws in the period that could have made a difference as the Raiders outscored the Red Devils 23 -18 to take the win… Payne led all scorers with his 27 points and Ahmarie Bates was also in double-digits for the Red Devils with 19 points… Others scoring for the Red Devils were P.J. Bluford with 4 points, Elijah Campbell 3,  Davis Wilson 2, Titus Hood 2, Sam Tiller 2 and Kimon Quarles 1 .… The Raiders were led by Dee Foster with 19 points and Hill’s 15…. Others scoring for the Raiders were Dravious Copeland 9, Leonard Williams 9, J’Von Harris 4, Jordan Woodruff 4, Shamare Dendy 3 and Christian Anderson 2… The Red Devils fall to 0-2 on the season while the Raiders improve to 2-3 on the season…  Round 2 of County Championship will be this Friday at LDHS…. In the meantime the Red Devils travel to Chester tomorrow while the Raiders travel to Hillcrest.

  • Boys: LA 66 – Hawks 55… Crusaders outscored the Hawks 15-8 in the first quarter and then went on to hold off the Hawks as they took a 66-55 win to run their record to 3-2 on the season… Noah Moore led the Crusaders with a game-high 26 points and Dawson Foster also finished in double-digits with 15… Others scoring for the Crusaders were Thomas Lowry with 6 points, Charlton McCall 4 and both Cal Robertson and Luke Kerber with 2 points each… The Crusaders will be back in action tomorrow as the boys host Covenant Christian at 6 and the girls host Gray Collegiate after the boys somewhere around 7:15 or so.

Any funds raised will not supplant existing funding from LCSD 55 but we want to enhance the pride and possibilities inherent in our athletic programs… The funds raised will go toward ensuring adequate resources for travel to camps, scrimmages, and other activities that improve student-athlete performance but may stretch the regular season travel budget… The different coaches are compiling a “wish list” of items they would like to see the monies go toward… If you would like you to be a part of our Team of 1,000. Just a $55 gift from each member of our Team of 1,000 will help us reach our goal of $55,000. By donating to the Team of 1,000 fundraising campaign, you are helping the student-athlete experience; you are also joining many others in a commitment to athletic excellence in Laurens…. For more information on this including how you can join the team, click here… Please consider joining, I have.
