Checking Traffic Fatalities

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety yesterday announced a preliminary number of five people died this past weekend on state highways. This brings the total traffic fatalities for this year to 924, ten more that the number at the same date last year. Of the 924 fatalities for 2018, 636 people were occupants of a motor vehicle, 138 were pedestrians, 96 were motorcyclists and 19 were bicyclists.

Spartanburg and Greenville counties remained with the highest and second-highest traffic death count in the state, with 65 deaths in Spartanburg and 64 in Greenville County. The Highway Patrol has investigated wrecks resulting in 31 deaths across Laurens County, about twice the death toll as neighboring Greenwood County’s 16.

Neighboring Abbeville and Union Counties each have 4 fatalities through Sunday midnight, among the lowest in the state.
