Local Notes:

CHS: The Red Devil varsity basketball teams traveled to Chester to take on the Cyclones a former region foe….

  • Girls: Clinton 63 – Chester 21… The Red Devil girls’ basketball team went into last night’s game undefeated and came out the same way as they routed the Cyclones by a score of 63-21… The game was never in doubt after the first quarter as the Red Devils put 22 points on the boards while holding the Cyclones scoreless… By the time the half rolled around the Red Devils led 42-6 and everybody got to play in this one… The Red Devils were led in scoring by savannah Campbell who had a game-high 16 points… Tinique Austin was also in double-digits with 12 points and so was Danah Kinard with 11… Others scoring for the Red Devils were De’Shanti Watts with 8, Payton Price-Walker 4 and scoring 2 points each were Taneal Evans, Aaliyah Johnston, Terriauna Bennett, Latoria Johnson, Quiana Suber and Adaija Darby… The team record is now 5-0 on the season.
  • Boys: Chester 80 – Clinton 53… The news is not as good for Red Devil fans where the boys are concerned as Chester took an 80-53 win over the Red Devils… The Cyclones opened up a 26-14 lead after 8 minutes of play and then outscored Clinton in each of the remaining quarters except the last where the Red Devils outscored them 12-8… As Coach Romines commented afterwards “Chester played well and we struggled on both offense and defense”… He also noted that they were playing shorthanded as last night JD Payne was not able to play  in addition to Konnor Richardson who has been out due to a football injury… Ahmari Bates led the Red Devils on offense with 23 points while PJ Bluford was also in double digits with 12 points… Kimon Quarles and Davis Wilson both contributed 3 points each… Titus Hood, Qua Quarles, Elijah Campbell, Juan Lawson, Danny Kinard and Theo Sparks all had 2 points each.

LDHS: The Laurens Raider varsity teams traveled up to Simpsonville last night to take on the Hillcrest Rams a former region foe…. The Raiders were hoping to avenge losses to the Rams at LDHS one week earlier.

  • Girls: Hillcrest 55 – Laurens 44… In the first game last night the Lady Raiders were hoping to avenge a 62-41 loss a week ago but it was not to be as Hillcrest took a 55-44 win… The rams jumped out to a 10 point lead (18-8) at the end of the first quarter and the Raiders were able to cut the lead to 7 (26-19) at the half but were outscored by the Rams in each of the last two quarters… The rams had 3 players scoring in double-digits while the Raiders had none… The Raiders were led in scoring by Kenaja Burnside, Qua Foster, and Diamond Presley who all had 8 points… Hanna Wiles added 7 points, Raniya Jackson  6, Lamoria Allen 5, and Nadia Anderson 2… The Raiders are now 1-4 on the season.
  • Boys: Hillcrest 59 – Laurens 53… Now Tuesday of last week the rams took a 63-52 win over the Raiders at home where the Raiders led most of the way and let the win slip away in the fourth quarter… well last night was pretty much the same as the Raiders led 31-20 at the half but the Rams chipped away at the lead and overtook and passed the Raiders with a couple of minutes left in the game to take a 59-53 win over the Raiders…The Raiders were led by Amaiji Hill’s14 points while Dra Copland was also in double-digits with 11 points as well as Christian Anderson with 10… Dee Foster added 7 points while Leonard Williams, Shamare Dendy and JQ Fair all had 4 points each…The Raiders are now 3-4 on the season and the teams will host Clinton this Friday night for round 2 of the County Championship.

Laurens Academy: The Laurens Academy Crusaders were the only team in the county that played at home last night… The boys and middle school teams faced off against Covenant Christian which does not have a varsity girls’ team so the Lady Crusaders took on Gray Collegiate Academy.

  • Girls: LA 38 – Gray 32… The girls’ game saw two undefeated teams get together… The Lady War Eagles are a SCHSL Class AA team out of West Columbia and they came into the game with a 5-0 record the same as the Lady Crusaders… This was the toughest test to date for the Crusaders as they found themselves trailing 9-5 at the end of the first quarter of play… However they came back in the second quarter and outscored the War Eagles 13-6 in the second quarter to lead 18-15 at the half and then held on to take a 38-32 win over Gray… Ruthie Moore led the Crusaders with 20 points and was the only Crusader scoring in double-digits… Regan Williamson added 7 points, Jennifer Wu 5, Blair Quarles 4, and Florence Mitchell 2
  • Boys: LA 50 – Covenant Christian 12…  Now the news is just as good in the boys’ game as the Crusaders rolled over the Covenant Christian Eagles by a score of 50-12… The score was 24-2 at the end of the first quarter and needless to say the Crusaders never were challenged… The Crusaders were led by Noah Moore who had 16 points on the night and was the only player to score more than 10 points… Others scoring for the Crusaders were Charlton McCall with 7 points while scoring 6 points each were Dawson Foster, Cal Robertson, and Diamonte Grant… Thomas Lowry had 4 points, Luke Kerber 2, Sunny Li 2, and jred Jin 1… The Crusaders are now 4-2 on the season.

Any funds raised will not supplant existing funding from LCSD 55 but we want to enhance the pride and possibilities inherent in our athletic programs… The funds raised will go toward ensuring adequate resources for travel to camps, scrimmages, and other activities that improve student-athlete performance but may stretch the regular season travel budget… The different coaches are compiling a “wish list” of items they would like to see the monies go toward… If you would like you to be a part of our Team of 1,000. Just a $55 gift from each member of our Team of 1,000 will help us reach our goal of $55,000. By donating to the Team of 1,000 fundraising campaign, you are helping the student-athlete experience; you are also joining many others in a commitment to athletic excellence in Laurens…. For more information on this including how you can join the team, click here… Please consider joining, I have.
