Sports Report for Monday, 12-17-2018

Local Notes:

CHS:  The Red Devil varsity basketball teams hosted the Wildcat of Ninety Six last Friday night.

  • Girls: Clinton 45 – Ninety Six 20… The Lady Red Devils ran their record to 7-0 with a dominating 45-20 win over the Lady Wildcats… The Red Devils had a great first quarter building a 17-2 lead by its end and then slacked off some in the second quarter only outscoring the Wildcats 8-4… They came back out in the third quarter and got back into double digits scoring 13 points and that was enough to insure the game… The Red Devils were led by Savannah Campbell with 12 points and De’Shanti Watts with 10… Terriauna Bennett finished with 7 points, Latoria Johnson 6, Tinique Austin 4, Taneal Evans 3, Payton Price-Waters 2 and Serenity 1.
  • Boys: Clinton 57 – Ninety Six 54… Now there is good news where the boys are concerned as they tasted victory for the first time this season defeating the Wildcat 57-54… As Coach Romines put it “it was an ugly win but it beats losing”… The reason he would say that is that the Red Devils went 10 for 28 from the free throw line and 3-10 in the critical last minute of play… The Red Devils trailed 16-12 at the end of the first quarter but came back to take a 28-25 lead at the half… The stretched the lead out to 6 points (42-36) at the start of the final 8 minutes of play and then held on through the free throw shooting problems… JD Payne had a game-high 28 points to lead the Red Devils and Ahamari Bates finished with 14… PJ Bluford had 8 points, Davis Wilson 3 and both Elijah Campbell and Juan Lawson chipped in 2 points each… The Red Devils will host the Chester Cyclones in varsity action tomorrow night.

LDHS: The Laurens Raiders hosted the JL Mann Patriots in Region I-5A action last Friday night

  • Boys: Laurens 67 – Mann 63…. A pair of made free throws by Amaiji Hill and Christian Anderson in the final 11 seconds of play lifted the Raider boys to a 67-63 win over the JL Mann Patriots… The Raiders started the game out on a 100 point pace as they led 25-4 after the first 8 minutes mainly on the strength of Dee Fosters 12 points in the quarter… The Patriots would close the gap to 35-23 at the half partially due to the fact that Foster was limping a lot after the first quarter… Mann continued to cut into the Raider lead and at the start of the 4th quarter the Raider was down to 46-41… The Patriots tied the game at 63 all with 20.3 seconds left in the game and then fouled Hill with 11.5 seconds left where he stepped to the line and canned both double-bonus free throws… Mann the turned the ball over and fouled Anderson who also made both free throws to seal the win… The Raiders were led by Foster who finished with 17 points, Anderson with 14 and Hill with 12… Others scoring for the Raiders were Leonard Williams with 8, Shamare Dendy 5, Dra Copeland & JQ Fair with 3 each, J’Von Harris & Jordan Woodruff 2 each and Ced McDowell with 1… The Raiders ae now 5-5 overall and 1-1 in region play.
  • Girls: Mann 72 – Laurens 50… The news is not as good where the Lady Raiders are concerned as the Patriots took a 72-50 win…. The Patriot press caused the Raiders to turn the ball over at a couple of points in the game and the Raiders also had too many unforced turnovers that often led to Patriot points… The Patriots extended their lead at the end of each quarter as they outscored the Raiders by at least 3 in every quarter… The Raiders were led by Qua Fortson who had 13 and Kenaja Byrnside with 12… Raniya Jackson finished with 9, MK Moore 6, Nadia Anderson 5, Paula Abrams & Aija Davis 2 each while Ashanti Conway rounded out the Raider scoring with 1 point… The team is now 1-7 overall and 0-2 in region play… The Raiders will finish out their pre-Christmas portion of the schedule as they traveled to Easley tomorrow night to take on the Green Wave.

Laurens Academy… The Laurens Academy Crusader basketball teams traveled down to Hilton Head Friday to take on the Hilton Head Prep Dolphins and then on Saturday they played the Hilton Head Christian Academy Eagles.

  • Friday Girls; LA 32 – HHP 16… In girls’ action, the Crusaders’ offense was held to its lowest point total of the season to date but still managed to win by a score of 32-16 over the Dolphins to remain undefeated… They led by a score of 8-5 at the end of the first quarter and then outscored the Eagles by at least 2 points in every quarter to take the win… Blair Quarles was the only Crusader in double-digits with a game-high 10 points… Jennifer Wu finished with 9 points, Ruthie Moore 8, Regan Williamson 3 and Morgan Marlett 2.
  • Saturday Girls: HHCA 38 – LA 18… Someone once said that all good things must come to an end and that is what happened to the Crusaders as their winning streak going back to early in the season last year was broken by the HHCA Eagles as they took a 38-18 win over the Crusaders…The Crusaders came out cool as the Eagles led 9-4 at the end of the first quarter… The Crusaders picked it up in the second quarter and led 16-15 at the half… The second half proved to be a disaster for the Crusaders as they managed only 2 points in the third quarter and none in the last while the Eagles totaled 21 in the second half to take the win… Ruthie Moore led the Crusaders with 8 points while both Regan Williamson and Jennifer Wu finished with 4 points each… Florence Mitchell rounded out the Crusader scoring with 2 points.
  • Friday Boys: HHP 75 – LA 35… Sorry no details available and at this time I do not know how the boys did on Saturday against the HHCA Eagles… I’ll try to get that information from Coach Plowden today…. Tonight the varsity boys and sub-varsity teams will be hosting Palmetto Christian while the girls will be hosting the Upstate Bearcats.

  • A Team of 1,000” Fundraising Campaign… Laurens District 55 High School (LDHS) with the support of Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) is launching a Team of 1,000 athletic fundraising campaign. LDHS hopes to raise $55,000 to contribute towards the wishes of the athletic programs. Any funds raised will not supplant existing funding from LCSD 55 but we want to enhance the pride and possibilities inherent in our athletic programs… The funds raised will go toward ensuring adequate resources for travel to camps, scrimmages, and other activities that improve student-athlete performance but may stretch the regular season travel budget… The different coaches are compiling a “wish list” of items they would like to see the monies go toward… If you would like you to be a part of our Team of 1,000. Just a $55 gift from each member of our Team of 1,000 will help us reach our goal of $55,000. By donating to the Team of 1,000 fundraising campaign, you are helping the student-athlete experience; you are also joining many others in a commitment to athletic excellence in Laurens…. For more information on this including how you can join the team, click here… Please consider joining, I have.
