Sports Report for Wednesday, 12-19-2018

Local Notes:

CHS: The Clinton Red Devils hosted the Chester Cyclones in non-region varsity action last night.

  • Girls: Clinton 71 – Chester 13… The Lady Red Devils came out last night and shut out the Lady Cyclones in the first quarter and then led 31-2 at the half as they took all the wind out of the Cyclones by taking a 70-13 win… In an understatement Coach Gardner said “A solid team effort”…  Dana Kinard led the Red Devils with 14 points… Others scoring in double digits were De’Shanti Watts with 11 and both Savannah Campbell and Tinique Austin scored 10 points… Others scoring were Terriauna Bennett with 7, Peyton Price-Walker & Serenity Baker 6 each, Quiana Suber 3 and with 2 points each were Latoria Johnson & Adaija Darby… The team is now 8-0 on the season.
  • Boys: Chester 74 – Clinton 60… Now the news is not as good where the boys are concerned as the Cyclones took their second win of the season over the Red Devils this time by a score of 74-60… The Red Devils got within 6 points late in the game but could get no closer… Ahamari Bates led the Red Devils with 29 points while JD Payne had 15… P.J. Bluford finished with 7 points, Davis Wilson 5, Kimon Quarles & Titus Hood both added 2 points… The Red Devil varsity teams travel to Ninety Six tonight.

 

LDHS:  The Laurens Raider varsity basketball teams traveled to Easley last night to take on the Green Wave in Region I–AAAAA action

  • Girls: Laurens 60 – Easley 51… In the first game of the evening, the Lady Raiders came out hot as they raced out to a 23-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and then went on to defeat the Green Wave 60-51 picking up their second win of the season… Qua Fortson led the Raiders with 16 points (5 in the first quarter)… Raniya Jackson was also in double-digits with 14 points as well as Kenaja Burnside who finished with 10 points… Others scoring for the Raiders were Precious Grant with 6 points, Aija Davis & MK Moore 5 each, Lamoria Allen 4 and Ashanti Conway 1… The Raiders are now 2-7 overall and 1-2 in region play heading into the holiday break.
  • Boys: Laurens 41 – Easley 36… The Raider boys’ team completed the sweep of the Green Wave as they took a 41-36 win… The game was a relatively low scoring affair as basketball goes as both teams struggled offensively… Laurens led at the end of each quarter and by the time the fourth quarter started they led 39-36… They made only 2 free throws in the 8 minutes and held on to take the win… Christian Anderson led the Raiders with a game-high 13 points while Dee Foster added 11… Amaiji Hill had 7 points, Dra Copeland & Leonard Williams 4 each and Jordan Woodruff rounded out the scoring with 2 points… The Raiders improve to 6-5 on the season and 2-1 in region play… The teams are off until after Christmas.

 

Laurens Academy: The Crusaders were at home Monday night as the girls took on Easley Home School and the boys faced off against the Palmetto Christian Lions.

  • Girls: LA 55 – EHS 37… The Lady Crusaders got back in the winning column as they defeated a tough EHS team by a score of 55-37… The Crusaders started out a little slow as they trailed 14-12 at the end of the first quarter but rebounded to take a 31-23 lead at the half and were never really threatened after that… Ruthie Moore had a blistering 31 points to lead the Crusaders… Jennifer Wu was also in double-digits with 12 points… Regan Williamson had 9, Florence Mitchell 2 and Morgan Marlett 1….The team is now 9-1 on the season.
  • Boys: LA 55 – PC 14…  Meanwhile the Crusader boys also rolled to a big win as they defeated the Palmetto Christian Lions 55-14… The outscored the Lions 23-0 in the first quarter and they too also were never really threatened after that… Noah Moore led the Crusaders with 16 points while Charlton McCall had 12… Thomas Lowry, Cal Robertson, and Luke Kerber all contributed 5 points each… Dawson Foster added 4 more points while Sunny Li and Hunter Mullinax finished with 2 each… The team is now 7-4 on the season

  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration is now open for youth basketball for ages 3-6… The cost is $40 per child and registration will close 1-6-2019 with the season starting the next day.
  • Baseball Winter Camp… The Raider Baseball program will be hosting a one-day baseball camp on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 11:00am-2:00pm… This camp will be held in the Main Gym at Laurens High School, as well as our indoor batting facility… The camp fee is $30/camper. If you have more than one child participating, each additional camper will be $20. This camp is being offered to anyone who is in 1st-8th grade.   • A Team of 1,000” Fundraising Campaign… Laurens District 55 High School (LDHS) with the support of Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) is launching a Team of 1,000 athletic fundraising campaign. LDHS hopes to raise $55,000 to contribute towards the wishes of the athletic programs. Any funds raised will not supplant existing funding from LCSD 55 but we want to enhance the pride and possibilities inherent in our athletic programs… The funds raised will go toward ensuring adequate resources for travel to camps, scrimmages, and other activities that improve student-athlete performance but may stretch the regular season travel budget… The different coaches are compiling a “wish list” of items they would like to see the monies go toward… If you would like you to be a part of our Team of 1,000. Just a $55 gift from each member of our Team of 1,000 will help us reach our goal of $55,000. By donating to the Team of 1,000 fundraising campaign, you are helping the student-athlete experience; you are also joining many others in a commitment to athletic excellence in Laurens….
