Sports Report for Friday, 12-21-2018

Sorry for the delay in posting this. Our website has been down since very early this morning and did not come back up for me to post until late afternoon.

PC Notes:

  • MBK: Butler 76 – PC 67… Back on Tuesday night the Blue Hose men’s basketball team traveled to Butler and led by as many as 14 points in the first half but could not hold eh lead as Butler came back to take a 76-67 win over the Blue Hose… For more information about this game, click here… The team is now 6-6 on the season while Butler is 8-3 and the Blue Hose will be back in action tomorrow as they head to Dayton, Ohio to take on Dayton in a 2 pm contest.
  • WBK: Davidson 83 – PC 56… Also last Tuesday the PC women were in action up at Davidson taking on the Wildcats… The news here is not good either as the Wildcats took an 83-56 win over the Blue Hose… For more information about this game, click here… The team will be back in action at noon today as they travel down I-26 to the coast to take on the College of Charleston .

  • Savannah Campbell Signs with Erskine… This past Wednesday in the auditorium at CHS senior Savannah Campbell signed a letter of intent to continue her basketball career and education at Erskine College playing for the Flying Fleet… Savannah is getting a “full ride” not only because she is an outstanding athlete but an outstanding student and person as pointed out by her coach John Gardner… If you would like to see a short interview done with Savannah after the signing and a few photos, click here… Congratulation to Savannah!



Wrestling… The Raider wrestling team was in action back on Wednesday as they traveled down to Irmo for a tri-match with Irmo and Spring Valley

  • Laurens 51 – Irmo 27… After a tough weekend last weekend the Raiders rebounded taking a 51-27 win over the home team Irmo… Raiders who defeated their opponents on the mats were Austin Doolittle, Austin James, Brian Sheffield and Trevor Neal… Other Raiders took wins by forfeits and if you would like to see who they were and complete match details, click here
  • Laurens 54 – Spring Valley 30…. The bus ride home Wednesday night most likely seemed shorter than the one going down because the Raiders also took a 54-30 win over the Spring Valley Vikings… Jeremy Leonard, Will Pontoon, Andrew Shelton, Richard Rush, Nicholas Jones and Robert Lawson were all able to take wins on the mats against their opponents… … Other Raiders took wins by forfeits and if you would like to see who they were and complete match details, click here

Octavia Johnson Signs with Allen University… Late last week LDHS senior Octavia Johnson signed a letter of intent to continue her education and softball career at Allen University next season for the Yellow Jackets… Johnson coming into her senior season she has a career batting average of .326 with 37 runs batted in and has scored 42 times herself… Last year she hit .395, had 3 homers and 26 runs batted in… If you would like to see a short interview done with Octavia after the signing and a few photos, click here… Congratulations to Octavia.


Laurens Academy:

  • Varsity Boys in Tournament Starting Tonight… The Laurens Academy Crusader boys’ team will in a holiday tournament down in Newberry staring tonight… Tonight they will take on Northside Christian at Newberry Academy with tipoff set for 6:00 pm…. Tomorrow they will take on South Aiken Baptist ay Newberry College starting at 7:30… It’s not that far down to Newberry and I am sure the team would like to see Crusader fans down there cheering them on.


Middle School Basketball Scores:

Gray Court-Owing Tigers at Clinton MS taking on the Wildcats.

  • Girls: CMS 30 – GCO 16… In girls action the CMS Wildcats took a 30-16 win over the GCO Tigers…. The Wildcats led 6-2 after 6 minutes of play and then outscored the Tigers in each quarter to take the win… Nevaeh Johnson led the Wildcats with 8 points… Others scoring for the Wildcats were Jordon Hill with 6 points, Asia Barr 4, fantasia Walker 4, DaShari Simpson 2 and Anna Litzenberger 2… GCO’s Dayzia Grant led all scorers with 14 of the Tigers 16 points
  • Boys: CMS 53 – GCO 18… The Wildcats completed the sweep of the Tigers taking a 54-18 win over the Tigers… They outscored the Tigers 17-4 in the first quarter, led 23-11 at the half and then put the game away in the third quarter outscoring the Tigers 20-3… The leading scores for the Wildcats were Austin Copeland with 13 points and Jadden Copeland with 12… For the Tigers Tylan Lindsey was the leading scorer with 14 of the Tigers 18 points.

  • Girls: Sanders 36 – HT 25… The Sanders girls took a come-from-behind 36-25 win over the Lady Panthers… HT led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter and 22-17 at the half… By the time the third quarter ended Sanders led 23-22 and went on to take the win… Coach Dickey said his defense was keyed on stopping 2 HT players Faith Jackson and MKalie Revis and that eventually payed off… Amelia Evans let the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 14 points and Osaviona Swindler had 10… The Panther were led by Faith Jackson who had 17 points 15 of them in the first half.
  • Boys: Sanders 39 – HT 36… The boys’ game was close one thorough out as it was tied 6-6 at the end of the first quarter and 14-14 at the half but the Yellow Jackets prevailed taking a 39-36 win over the Panthers… The second half saw several lead changes but in the end turnovers doomed the Panthers along with Sanders control of the boards …Gemire Darden led the scoring for Sanders with 16 points all but 2 of them coming in the second half when he got several points on put-backs of missed shots… Ty’Quanis Johnson was also in double digits with 13 points… For the Panthers the leading scorer was Carter Faulkner with 10 points.

  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration is now open for youth basketball for ages 3-6… The cost is $40 per child and registration will close 1-6-2019 with the season starting the next day.
  • Baseball Winter Camp… The Raider Baseball program will be hosting a one-day baseball camp on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 11:00am-2:00pm… This camp will be held in the Main Gym at Laurens High School, as well as our indoor batting facility… The camp fee is $30/camper. If you have more than one child participating, each additional camper will be $20. This camp is being offered to anyone who is in 1st-8th grade.   • A Team of 1,000” Fundraising Campaign… Laurens District 55 High School (LDHS) with the support of Laurens County School District 55 (LCSD 55) is launching a Team of 1,000 athletic fundraising campaign. LDHS hopes to raise $55,000 to contribute towards the wishes of the athletic programs. Any funds raised will not supplant existing funding from LCSD 55 but we want to enhance the pride and possibilities inherent in our athletic programs… The funds raised will go toward ensuring adequate resources for travel to camps, scrimmages, and other activities that improve student-athlete performance but may stretch the regular season travel budget… The different coaches are compiling a “wish list” of items they would like to see the monies go toward… If you would like you to be a part of our Team of 1,000. Just a $55 gift from each member of our Team of 1,000 will help us reach our goal of $55,000. By donating to the Team of 1,000 fundraising campaign, you are helping the student-athlete experience; you are also joining many others in a commitment to athletic excellence in Laurens….
