Sports Report for Monday, 1-21-2019

Local Notes:

CHS:  The Red Devils hosted the Woodruff Wolverines last Friday night in Region III-AAA play.

  • Girls Woodruff 40 – Clinton 27… For the second game in a row the Lady Red Devils’ offense has not been up to recent standards as they fell to the Lady Wolverines 40-27… One of Clinton’s key players De’Shanti Watts has been out with an injury and the lack of her offensive input has been noticeable plus the Red Devils were hit by the “bug” that is going around this week. … Clinton only trailed 9-7 at the end of the first quarter and 19-15 at the half but the Wolverines continued to outscore the Red Devils in the third and fourth quarters in route to the win… Afterwards Coach Gardner said “Tough loss but great effort… A tough week as we fight through adversity… Can’t wait to see this team get healthy and finish strong”… Terriauna Bennett was the only Red Devil scoring in double-digits with 12 points… Savannah Campbell finished with 9 points while Taneal Evans and Payton Price-Walker both finished with 3 points each…The Red Devils are now 14-3 on the season and 2-3 in region play.

  • Boys: Clinton: 49 – Woodruff 48… WARNING: If you are a Red Devil basketball fan who has a heart condition you might want to be sure to bring along your nitroglycerin or other heart medications if you are going to a Red Devil boys’ basketball game… The reason I say that is for the second game in a row they have pulled out a nail-biting 1 point win as they defeated Woodruff last Friday night by a score of 49-48… The Red Devil played very well in the first three quarters as they led 42-29 going into the final 8 minutes of play… However in the fourth quarter the Red Devils caught a bad case of the turnover bug as they committed 7 of them as many as they had in the previous three quarters… The turnovers and a hot Woodruff offense almost let the Wolverines come all the way back but they had a shot to win at the end but the Red Devils got the stop and the win…. JD Payne led the Red Devils with 16 points and Ahmari Bates who had 13… PJ Bluford finished with 7 points, Konnor Richardson 6, Sam Tiller 4 and Davis Wilson 3… The Red Devils improve to 5-11 on the season and 2-3 in region play…. The varsity teams will host Union County tomorrow night.

LDHS: The Raider varsity basketball teams were on the road last Friday as they traveled to Anderson to take on the Westside Rams in region action.

  • Girls: Westside 59 – Laurens 51… The Lady Raiders had one of their best offensive games as of late last Friday at Westside and Qua Fortson led all scorers with 21 points but it was not enough as the Rams took a 59-51 win over the Raiders… The Raiders only trailed by 4 points (40-36) going into the  fourth quarter where the rams outscored them 19-15 hitting 5 of 7 free throws down the stretch while the Raiders only made 5 of 10… As Coach Allen said afterwards “we need to capitalize on the turnovers and limit our unforced turnovers… We must box out, rebound and make more layups and free throws”… Fortson was the only Raider in double-digits and other scoring for the Raiders were Lamoria Allen with 9 points, MK Moore 7, Kenaja Burnside 6, Ashanti Conway 3, Asia Davis 2. Hanna Wiles 2 and Raniya Jackson 1… The Raiders are now 5-13 on the season and 1-7 in region play.

  • Boys: Westside 59 – Laurens 55… In the boys’ game at Westside last Friday night the Raiders took on the #7 in Class-AAAAA ranked Rams…. The Raiders gave them all they wanted and actually led 20-17 at the half… The two teams battled about even in the second half but when the buzzer sounded at the end of the fourth quarter the score stood 49-49 sending the game into overtime… In the overtime the rams outscored the Raiders 10-6 to take a 59-55 win… The shot of the scorebook Coach Walker shows that Dra Copeland finished with 20 points and Christian Anderson 17… Shamare Dendy finished with 9 points, Jordan Woodruff 4 and both Dra Copeland and Leonard Williams 2 each… That only totals to 54 points so someone else had another point… The Raiders fall to 9-10 on the season and 4-4 in region play…. The Raider varsity boys’ team travels to York HS today to participate in the MLK Showcase and both varsity teams return to action tomorrow traveling to JL Mann to take on the Patriots.

Laurens Academy: The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled to Greenwood last Friday night to take on the Greenwood Christian Hawks in non-region action.

  • Girls: LA: 42 – GC 10… In varsity girls’ action, the Lady Crusaders rolled to a 42-10 win over the Lady Hawks… The Crusaders jumped out to a 14-2 lead after the first 8 minutes of play and then continued to outscore the Hawks in each of the next two quarters and going on to take a 42-10 win… Neither team scored in the fourth quarter as the Crusaders played their bench… Blair Quarles had a game-high 16 points and Ruthie Moore finished with 15 points… Hanna Stribling and Florence Mitchell finished with 4 points each while Morgan Marlett rounded out the Crusader scoring with 3 points… The Lady Crusaders are now 16-3 on the season.

  • Boys: LA 52 – GC 40… In the final game of the night, the Crusader boys also took a win defeating the Hawks 52-10… The Crusaders trailed 11-7 at the end of the first quarter but made up that difference in the second quarter as the game was tied 21-21 going into the locker room at the half… The Crusaders came back out in the second half and outscored the Hawks 31-19 to take the win… The Crusaders had the two leading scorers in the game and they were Charlton McCall who scored 18 points and Dawson Foster who finished with 15 points… Thomas Lowry and Noah Moore finished with 7 points each while Cal Robertson scored 3 and Diamonte Grant 2…. The Crusaders are now 11-7 on the season… The Crusaders will be hosting New Covenant out of Anderson tomorrow.
