Agricultural Center Proposed

Clinton High School Agriculture Teacher Annette Bodie was joined by Laurens County Parks and Recreation Director Andy Howard last night, requesting Laurens County develop a 25-acre county-owned site adjacent to the county airport as an Agriculture Center.

Ms. Bodie told council that there would be a big demand for the center, due to the agricultural nature of the county and the many young people who are more active in groups like the Future Farmers of America than in sports.  She said, “There is nowhere in this county to have a horse show, or livestock show, and there is no place for people to house their animals overnight. She added, “This type of center would bring income to the county,” noting, “Horse people spend money.”

Councilman Joe Wood recalled concern over some roof designs that create problems for airplanes using the airport. Andy Howard responded that the type of roof that sparked concern in the past would not be used at the new Ag Center. Councilman Stewart Jones said he’s in favor of the idea but asked if grants could be obtained. Howard replied, “We only receive about $20,000 in grants every two years. He said, “we now have $80,000, but we have to divide it between all our towns.”
