Sports Report for Wednesday, 1-23-2019

Local Notes:

CHS:  The Red Devils hosted the Union County Yellow Jackets in region action last night in region action… back on January 1st the Yellow Jackets swept the Red Devils at Union so revenge was on the Red Devil minds.

  • Girls: Clinton 28 – Union 24… In the first game the lady Red Devils got back on the winning track as they took a 28-24 win over the Yellow Jackets… The Red Devils started out ice cold as they failed to score in the first quarter while the Yellow Jackets scored 8 points… Both teams played good defense the entire game and by the time the fourth quarter started Union led 22-13… In the final 8 minutes the Red Devils defense held Union to just 2 points while the offense put 13 point on the board giving the Red Devils a come from behind 28-24 win…. Savannah Campbell led the Red Devils in scoring with 7 points… Taneal Evans and Terriauna Bennett had 6 points each, De’Shanti Watts was well enough to play some and finished with 4 points, while both Dana Kinard and Payton Price-Walker finished with 2 points… The lady Red Devils are now 15-4 on the season and 3-3 in region play.


  • Boys: Clinton 69 – Union 50… In the final game the Clinton boys’ team also avenged an earlier loss to the Red Devils as they as they took a 69-50 win over Union… In the last two games the Red Devils won in nail bitters but that was not the case last night as the Red Devils rolled to a 25-9 lead at the half and pretty much maintained that margin or more as every time Union would try to make a run they answered with the same or more… Coach Eddie Romines said afterwards “tonight we played or complete “Team” game of the season”… Ahmari Bates led all scorers with 24 points… PJ Bluford was also in double digits as he scored 11 points, Elijah Campbell 9, JD Payne 8, Sam Tiller 6, Qua Quarles 5, Konnor Richardson 4 and Kimon Quarles 2… The Red Devils improve to 6-11 on the season and 3-3 ion region play…. The Red Devil varsity teams will travel to Mid-Carolina Friday to take on the Mid-Carolina Rebels.



LDHS: Last night the Raider basketball teams completed a stretch of 3 games on the road as they traveled to JL Mann to take on the Patriots in region action.

  • Girls: Mann 53 – Laurens 27… In the girls’ game, the Raiders did not play nearly as well as they did last Friday night at Westside as they managed on 27 points in the game while Mann struck fir 53… The score at the end of the first quarter was 14-5 Mann and they were never really threatened after that as they outscored the Raiders in every quarter… Qua Fortson was the leading scorer for the Raiders with 15 points… Aija Davis finished with 5 points, Kenaja Burnside 3 and both Hanna Wiles and Ashanti Conway finished with 2 points each… The Raiders are now 5-14 on the season and 1-7 in region play.


  • Boys: Mann 57 – Laurens 48… In the final game at Mann, the Patriots completed the sweep of the Raiders as they took a 57-48 win… The game was tied 13-13 at the end of the first quarter but the Patriots outscored the Raiders 17-8 in the second quarter to take a 30-21 lead into the locker room at the half… The Raiders did cut into that lead in the third quarter outscoring the Patriots 16-12 but could not sustain that momentum in the fourth as the Patriots went on to the win… Christian Anderson led the Raiders with 19 points… Dee Foster finished with 11 points, Dra Copeland 7 and both Leonard Williams and Shamare Dendy finished with 3 points each… The Raiders fall to 9-11 on the season and 4-5 in region play… They will be home Friday as they host the Easley Green Wave.



Laurens Academy: The Laurens Academy Crusaders played host to the New Covenant School Cavaliers last night.

  • Girls: LA 60 – NCS 23… In girls’ action the lady Crusaders rolled to a 60-23 win over the Lady Cavaliers… The Crusaders came out hot and led 17-8 at the end of the first quarter and then went on to outscore the Cavaliers in every quarter to take the win… The Crusaders opened the second half outscoring the Cavaliers 22-4 in the third quarter… The Crusaders only scored 8 points in the final quarter (the Cavaliers scored only 2) as the non-starters got a chance to play… Ruthie Moore had a game high 22 points and Blair Quarles was also in double-digits with 12 points… Morgan Marlett finished with 9 points, Jennifer Wu 6, Sarah Grace Natiello 4, Florence Mitchell 3 Emily Abercrombie 2 and Hanna Stribling 2… The Crusaders are now 17-3 on the season.
  • Boys: LA 62 – NCS 61… Now the news is also good where the varsity boys are concerned as they took a come from behind 62-61 win in a game that was decided on the last shot at the buzzer… The Crusaders trailed the Cavaliers 48-29 going into the fourth quarter but in the final 8 minutes saw they stormed back and take a 2 point lead on a three-point shot by Dawson Foster with 40 seconds left to play… The Cavaliers came down worked for a good shot and nailed a 3-pointer with about 7 seconds to go to take a 1 point lead… After Coach Plowden called a time out with less than 6 seconds to play, the inbounds pass went into Charlton McCall who took in in backcourt and drove ¾ of the court to put the ball in for the win at the buzzer… Dawson Foster led the Crusaders in scoring with 18 points… Noah Moore finished with 13 points despite fouling out early in the fourth quarter and Charlton McCall finished with 12… Thomas Lowry rounded out the scoring for the Crusaders with 9 points… The Crusaders are now 12-7 on the season and the Crusader basketball teams will host Richard Winn on Thursday.

  • Clinton 1977 & 1978 State Championship Teams To Hold Reunion…. Players from the 1978 Clinton High School State Championship Football Team will celebrate their 40th anniversary of winning the 3A State Championship on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the House of Pizza in downtown Clinton SC at 2:00 pm… Also, Clinton High’s 1977 undefeated 3A State Championship Football Team is also invited to celebrate the only teams in Clinton High Football history and the first team in Laurens County Football history to win back to back State Championships… The 1977 team was also the #1 team in the State (all classification including 4A and what’s now called 5A)…If you are a former player from the 1977 and/or the 1978 team(s), please plan to attend and RSVP Dale Adams at 864 377-1536 or Keith Wooten at 864 980-7828 or Anthony Henderson at 864 684-8246 or JD Fuller at 803 466-3343… If you know members of these two teams, please pass this information on to them.


  • Raider Baseball Tryouts… Coach Patterson has announced tryout dates for those interested in trying to make one of 3 Raider baseball teams this season… High school students who want to try out for the varsity or JV squads need to come to Ed Prescott Field on Monday or Tuesday January 28th or 29th between the hours of 4-5;30 pm… New this year will be a C-Team which id for middle school students only… They should report to Red Prescott Field on Wednesday or Thursday between 4-5:30 pm… Everyone must turn in a current physical before being allowed to try out.   • Raider Softball Tryouts… Coach Smith has also announced that the rider softball team will be holding tryouts for the varsity & JV squads January 28th through January 30th… Tryouts will be at the LSHS softball field starting at 4:15 pm each day and again participants must have a current physical before being allowed to tryout… Also be sure to bring appropriate equipment, as in gloves, cleats, etc… If you have questions or for more information call Coach Smith at 864-684-0110.


  • Laurens Area Youth Baseball Registration… Registration is now open for youth baseball through the Laurens Family YMCA and the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department… Ages 3-6 will register at the Laurens YMCS, Ages 7-8 Coaches Pitch as well as 9-10 Minors and 11-12 will register at The Ridge the Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters… Ages 13-15 will register at the Laurens YMCA…The cost is only $60 and that includes uniforms and insurance … Don’t let this pass you by as registration closed Thursday, February 7th.


  • Clinton YMCA Youth Baseball, Softball & O-Zone Baseball Registration Open… Registration for all levels of baseball including O-Zone baseball and girls’ softball is now open through Tuesday, 2-12-19… For information such as age levels for each type of baseball and softball, cut off dates for determining age, fall-out dates, cost, financial aid information and who to call if you have more questions, see our posting in the Featured Sports section on the right-lower side of our homepage at

  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration is now open for youth basketball for ages 3-6… The cost is $40 per child and registration will close 1-6-2019 with the season starting the next day.
