Sports Report for Thursday, 2-24-2019

Local Notes:

CHS:  The Red Devil JV basketball tama traveled to Union County HS to take on the Yellow Jackets.

  • Girls: Clinton 44 – Union 34… Grayson Taylor led the Red Devils with 10 points while both Deasia Boyd & Nikejah Boyd finished with 8 points.
  • Boys: Clinton 45 – Union 40… sorry no further details.
  • Today… The teams will be at home hosting the Mid-Carolina Rebels starting at 6:00 pm


 LDHS:  The Raider sub-varsity teams hosted the JL Mann Patriots last night in the main gym at LDHS.

  • JV Girls: Mann 18 – Laurens 16… The Raiders trailed 14-7 at the half but held the Patriots scoreless in the third quarter as they tried to come back and did tie the game late in the fourth quarter but fell a little sho9rt as Mann took an 18-16 win…Angel Johnson led the Raiders with 8 points…. Nya Anderson and Amareeyuna Anderson both finished with 4 points each.
  • 9th Grade Boys: Mann 51 – Laurens 27… Mann took a 51-27 win in 9th grade boys’ action… Mann only led 23-18 at the half but turnovers and poor shooting plagued the Raiders in the second half as Mann pulled away allowing the Raiders only 3 points in the final quarter… Waldrick Burnside had 12 points to lead the Raiders… Blake Nelson finished with 10, Lamont Allen 3 and Jackson Edwards 2.
  • JV Boys: Mann 45 – Laurens 29… The Patriots completed the sweep of the Raiders by taking a 45-29 win in JV boys’ action… The Raiders actually led 19-14 at the half but the Mann defense caused way too many turnovers in the second half as Mann took the come-from behind win… Chase Jackson was the only Raider in double-digits as he finished with 10 points… Toney Pulley & Isaiah Burnside both finished with 5 points each, Preston Mahon 4, Nock Cook 3 and Joshua Curton 2.
  • Today… The sub-varsity teams will be on the road traveling to Easley to take on the Green Wave.


Middle School Basketball:

Johnston Headed Back to Ware Shoals… The Ware Shoals Observer reported yesterday that Chris Johnston was approved Tuesday night by the Ware Shoals Board of Trustees as the new head football coach and athletic director… Chris is a native of Ware Shoals and a graduate of Ware Shoals High…Chris presently is the athletic director, head football coach and basketball coach at Hickory Tavern Middle School… He took that job this year after spending one year at Ware Shoals as assistant football coach and girls basketball coach a roll he will also fill next year.…Prior to that Chris has worked at Laurens Middle School in multiple coaching capacities… Chris’ father Bob Johnston was a highly successful girls’ basketball coach at Ware Shoals in the 19600s, 1970s and 1980s winning multiple state championships… The gym at ware Shoals is named for his father Bob Johnston… Congratulations and Good Luck to Chris… From one Ware Shoals graduate to another, Go Hornets!

Ware Shoals at Gray Court-Owings

  • Girls: GCO 32 – WS 15… The Lady Tigers of GCO more than doubled up the Lady Hornets as they took a 32-15 win… Dayzhia Grant led all scorers with 24 points… Krishma Billing had 2points, Iesha Mack 2 and JaNiyah Jones 3.
  • Boys: GCO 33 – WS 21… The GCO Tigers made it a sweep of the Hornets by defeating them 33-21 in the boys’ game… They did this despite being held scoreless in the second quarter… Jay Hunter led the Tigers with 14 points.


Newberry at Clinton MS

  • Girls: CMS 23 – Newberry 14… In girls’ action, the Wildcats held Newberry scoreless in the first half and then went on to take a 23-14 win… I believe Jordan Hill led the Wildcats in scoring with 9 points.
  • Boys: CMS 55 – Newberry 47.., Sorry no other details.

  • Clinton 1977 & 1978 State Championship Teams To Hold Reunion…. Players from the 1978 Clinton High School State Championship Football Team will celebrate their 40th anniversary of winning the 3A State Championship on Saturday, January 26, 2019 at the House of Pizza in downtown Clinton SC at 2:00 pm… Also, Clinton High’s 1977 undefeated 3A State Championship Football Team is also invited to celebrate the only teams in Clinton High Football history and the first team in Laurens County Football history to win back to back State Championships… The 1977 team was also the #1 team in the State (all classification including 4A and what’s now called 5A)…If you are a former player from the 1977 and/or the 1978 team(s), please plan to attend and RSVP Dale Adams at 864 377-1536 or Keith Wooten at 864 980-7828 or Anthony Henderson at 864 684-8246 or JD Fuller at 803 466-3343… If you know members of these two teams, please pass this information on to them.


  • Raider Baseball Tryouts… Coach Patterson has announced tryout dates for those interested in trying to make one of 3 Raider baseball teams this season… High school students who want to try out for the varsity or JV squads need to come to Ed Prescott Field on Monday or Tuesday January 28th or 29th between the hours of 4-5;30 pm… New this year will be a C-Team which id for middle school students only… They should report to Red Prescott Field on Wednesday or Thursday between 4-5:30 pm… Everyone must turn in a current physical before being allowed to try out.   • Raider Softball Tryouts… Coach Smith has also announced that the rider softball team will be holding tryouts for the varsity & JV squads January 28th through January 30th… Tryouts will be at the LSHS softball field starting at 4:15 pm each day and again participants must have a current physical before being allowed to tryout… Also be sure to bring appropriate equipment, as in gloves, cleats, etc… If you have questions or for more information call Coach Smith at 864-684-0110.


  • Laurens Area Youth Baseball Registration… Registration is now open for youth baseball through the Laurens Family YMCA and the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department… Ages 3-6 will register at the Laurens YMCS, Ages 7-8 Coaches Pitch as well as 9-10 Minors and 11-12 will register at The Ridge the Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters… Ages 13-15 will register at the Laurens YMCA…The cost is only $60 and that includes uniforms and insurance … Don’t let this pass you by as registration closed Thursday, February 7th.


  • Clinton YMCA Youth Baseball, Softball & O-Zone Baseball Registration Open… Registration for all levels of baseball including O-Zone baseball and girls’ softball is now open through Tuesday, 2-12-19… For information such as age levels for each type of baseball and softball, cut off dates for determining age, fall-out dates, cost, financial aid information and who to call if you have more questions, see our posting in the Featured Sports section on the right-lower side of our homepage at

  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration is now open for youth basketball for ages 3-6… The cost is $40 per child and registration will close 1-6-2019 with the season starting the next day.
