Sports Report for Tuesday, 1-29-2019

PC Notes:

  • WBK: Winthrop 55 – PC 52… Last Saturday the Lady Blue Hose traveled to Rock Hill to take on the Lady Eagles of Winthrop… The game went back and forth with both teams enjoying a lead at one point and PC had Winthrop’s lead down to 1 point with 47 seconds left but the Eagles hit a pair of free throws to take a 55-52 win… PC’s Kacie Hall had a game high 24 points… For more information on this game, click here… PC falls to 4-14 (2-5) on the season while Winthrop improves to 9-10 (5-3)… Presbyterian College hosts UNC Asheville tonight in a 6:00 pm game at the Templeton Center.

 

  • MBK: PC 99 – Winthrop 91… The PC men’s basketball team also played Winthrop but they were at home taking on the eagles… Now the news is better here as the Blue Hose defeated the eagles 99-91… PC trailed 55-44 at the half and came back to take the win with Adam Flagler leading the Blue Hose with 28 points scoring 20 of them in the second half… For more information on this game, click here… PC improves to 13-10 overall and 5-3 in the Big South, while Winthrop moves to 14-7, 6-2…. The Blue Hose head too Charleston Southern Wednesday night with tip-off slated for 7:30 pm. and the game can be seen on ESPN+.

Local Notes:

CHS: JV Basketball traveled to Newberry to take on the Bulldogs

  • Girls: Clinton 51 – Newberry 21…. Grayson Taylor led the Red devils with 10 points and Nikejah Boyd had 8.
  • Boys: Newberry 52 – Clinton 38… Coach Glenn said the played hard but just did not execute well especially in the fourth quarter… Jalen Ruff had 8 points for the Red Devils.

 

LDHS:

WRESTLING…. Well we need to do some catching up with the Raider wrestling team

  • Thursday, 1-24-19: Greenwood 49 – LDHS 30… Last Thursday the Raider wrestlers hosted the Greenwood Eagles in their last home match of the regular season… Unfortunately the Raider fell to Greenwood 40-39… Brian Sheffield, Jeremy Leonard, Will Pontoon and Andrew Shelton all defeated their opponents on the mats… To see if some of the Raiders took wins by forfeit and complete match details, click here
  • Saturday, 1-26-19: Region 1-AAAAA Individual Tournament… This past Saturday the Raiders traveled up to Woodmont HS for the Region I-AAAAA Individual Tournament… As a team the Raiders finished 5th with 8 Raiders finishing in the top 4 of their weight class…. They were: Will Pontoon 2nd in 220….Stetson Dawson 3rd in 106… Josh Schubert 3rd in 132… Austin James 3rd in 285… Brian Sheffield 4th in 120… Cody Emert 4th in 126… Jeremy Leonard 4th in 170… and Allen Llewellyn 4th in 195…  Congratulations to the team and these individuals for finishing in the top 4 of the region… The Raider wrestlers will travel to Rock Hill this Saturday to take on the Bearcats on their home floor in the first round of the Class-AAAAA team tournament… Should they defeat the Bearcats they will face another team to be determined Saturday afternoon … Good Luck to the Raiders!!

 

Sub-Varsity Basketball… The Raider sub-varsity basketball teams hosted the Wade Hampton Generals in the main gym at LDHS

  • 9th Grade Boys: Wade Hampton 42 – Laurens 39… Sorry no further details
  • JV Boys: Laurens 32 – Wade Hampton 25… Chase Jackson led the Raiders with 13 points.
  • JV Girls: Wade Hampton 25 – Laurens 18…  The Raiders tried to comeback but fell just short… For more information on this game click here.

 

Middle School Basketball… The Little River Conference post-season tournament will be starting today and at this time I do not have the brackets for the tournament but hope to obtain them today.

  • Tuesday, 2-5-19: Laurens Raider varsity teams host the Yellow jackets of TL Hanna in Region I-AAAAA action…. We will go live a couple of minutes before 6:00 pm.

  • Raider Baseball Tryouts… Coach Patterson has announced tryout dates for those interested in trying to make one of 3 Raider baseball teams this season… High school students who want to try out for the varsity or JV squads need to come to Ed Prescott Field on Monday or Tuesday January 28th or 29th between the hours of 4-5;30 pm… New this year will be a C-Team which id for middle school students only… They should report to Red Prescott Field on Wednesday or Thursday between 4-5:30 pm… Everyone must turn in a current physical before being allowed to try out.   • Raider Softball Tryouts… Coach Smith has also announced that the rider softball team will be holding tryouts for the varsity & JV squads January 28th through January 30th… Tryouts will be at the LSHS softball field starting at 4:15 pm each day and again participants must have a current physical before being allowed to tryout… Also be sure to bring appropriate equipment, as in gloves, cleats, etc… If you have questions or for more information call Coach Smith at 864-684-0110.

 

  • Joe Adair Outdoor Education Chicken Stew Fundraiser… The Joe Adair Outdoor Education Center will be having its final chicken stew fundraiser for this school year on February 1st… The cost of the stew will be $8:50 per quart… all monies raised will be used for the maintenance and upkeep of the center… The center is used by students in School Districts 55 & 56 from kindergarten to high school… It is also used by community and civic groups…Stew can be preordered by calling the center at 864-984-5492…. The stew will be available for pickup from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm on February 1st at the center.

 

  • Laurens Area Youth Baseball Registration… Registration is now open for youth baseball through the Laurens Family YMCA and the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department… Ages 3-6 will register at the Laurens YMCS, Ages 7-8 Coaches Pitch as well as 9-10 Minors and 11-12 will register at The Ridge the Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters… Ages 13-15 will register at the Laurens YMCA…The cost is only $60 and that includes uniforms and insurance … Don’t let this pass you by as registration closed Thursday, February 7th.

 

  • Clinton YMCA Youth Baseball, Softball & O-Zone Baseball Registration Open… Registration for all levels of baseball including O-Zone baseball and girls’ softball is now open through Tuesday, 2-12-19… For information such as age levels for each type of baseball and softball, cut off dates for determining age, fall-out dates, cost, financial aid information and who to call if you have more questions, see our posting in the Featured Sports section on the right-lower side of our homepage at

 

  • Hydra Softball Sign Ups… Registration for Hydra Softball will begin February 1st and continue until February 21st for girls ages 6-12 at the Hickory Tavern Park… Registration will be done on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 pm and on Saturdays from 11 am – 2pm… The cost is only $45 per child… If you have questions or want more information contact Nichole Patterson at 864-907-1549 or email her at: m-mscrapmetal-halfdime@outlook.com

 

  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration is now open for youth basketball for ages 3-6… The cost is $40 per child and registration will close 1-6-2019 with the season starting the next day.
