Sports Report for Wednesday, 1-30-2019

Local Notes:

CHS:  The Clinton Red Devils hosted the Newberry Bulldogs on Senior Night last night in key region games.

  • Girls: Clinton 59 – Newberry 56… The Lady Red Devils trailed by 10 points (44-34) going into the fourth quarter but rallied to come back and take a 59-56… The Red Devils opened the final 8 minutes of play hot and took the lead about halfway through the final quarter… Each team had a chance in the last couple of minutes as missed shots and turnovers haunted each team… Payton Price-Walker hit a key basket with 1:37 left to put the Red Devils ahead for good and De’Shanti Watts managed to hit a couple of free throws to insure the win in the ;last 30 seconds…. Tinique Austin finished the game with 16 points and Savannah Campbell 13… Watts finished with 11 points while Taneal Evans, Price-Walker and Terriauna Bennett all scored 6 points each… Danah Kinard had 2 to round out the scoring for Clinton… The ladies are now 16-5 on the season and 4-4 in region play.

 

  • Boys: Clinton 71 – Newberry 54… Now there is good news for Clinton fans as the boys competed the sweep of the Bulldogs by rolling to a 71-54 win over the #7 ranked Bulldogs… The Red Devils trailed 4-3 early but took a 5-4 lead with 4:33 left in first quarter though Newberry did get within 1 point about midway through the second quarter but the Red Devils surged to a 32-22 lead at the half and were never rally threatened again… Coach Romines was as expected excited over the total game played by the Red Devils in a great team effort… JD Payne led all scorers with 24 points… Ahmari Bates scored 19 points and PJ Bluford 11 to give the Red Devils 3 players in double digits… Davis Wilson finished with 5 points, Titus Hood 4, Qua Quarles and Konnor Richardson 3 each and Sam Tiller 2… The Red Devils are now 7-12 on the season and 4-4 in region play… The Red Devil varsity teams will travel to Emerald this Friday while the JVs will host Emerald tomorrow.

 

LDHS: The Laurens Raider varsity teams traveled to Greenville last night to take on the Wade Hampton Generals.

  • Girls: Laurens 54 – Wade Hampton 44… In the first game, the Lady Raiders found themselves trailing 37-30 going into the final quarter of play but they came storming back behind Qua Fortson’s 15 points in the quarter to take a 54-44 win over the Generals… Wade Hampton had slight leads after the first and second quarter as well as the third… Fortson finished with a game-high 24 points and was the only Raider in double-digits… Nadia Anderson finished with 7 points, Raniya Jackson 6, Kenaja Burnside & MK Moore 5 each, Aija Davis 4, Paula Abrams 2 and Hannah Wiles 1… The Lady Raiders improve to 6-15 on the season and 2-9 in region play.

 

  • Boys: Wade Hampton 67 – Laurens 59… Now the news is not as good where the boys are concerned as the General handed the Raider a tough 67-59 loss… The Raiders trailed 34-24 going into the locker rooms at the half but came out hot in the third quarter and outscored the Generals 25-16 to cut the Wade Hampton lead to 1 (50-49) going into the fourth quarter… In the third quarter the Raiders hit five three-point shots and on the night they had 9 three-point shots go in… However they could not maintain that momentums as the Generals outscored them 17-10 to take the win… Christian Anderson led the Raiders with 20 points 15 of which came from beyond the three-point arc… Dee Foster had 16 points with 12 of them coming from three-pint land… Leonard Williams and Shamare Dendy each had 8 points, Dra Copeland 3 while Jordan Woodruff and Josh Ricks rounded out the Raider scoring with 2 points each… The Raiders fall to 10-12 on the season and 5-6 in region play… The varsity teams will travel to Woodmont Friday while the sub-varsity teams will host the Wildcats tomorrow.

 

 

Laurens Academy: Last night the Crusader middle school and varsity girls only hosted the Cambridge Academy Cougars making up games delayed by weather in December.

  • Girls: LA 52 – Cambridge 14… The Lady Crusaders rolled to a 32-2 lead at the half and then went on to take a dominating 52-14 win where non-starters played a lot… Ruthie Moore led the Crusaders with a game-high 18 points… Jennifer Wu finished with 11 points, Blair Quarles 10, Megan Marlett 7 and Regan Williamson 6… The Crusaders are now 20-3 on the season and 8-0 in region play… All the Crusader teams will be in action this Friday night as they host Newberry Academy in the last games of the regular season on Senior Night.

 

Little River Middle School Basketball Tournament … There were two games at Clinton Middle School yesterday

  • Girls: CMS 16 – Newberry 5… In a game that featured many times more turnovers and missed layups than points, the Lady Wildcat outscored the Lady Tigers of Newberry MS 16-5 to punch their ticket to the semifinal game at HT tonight against the Lady Panthers…  DaShari Simpson and Emarceycia Campbell led the Wildcats with 3 points each.
  • Boys: CMS 56 – GCO 34… The second game pitted the GCO boys against the CMS Wildcats… The Tigers were able to stay close in the first quarter but the Wildcats still led 19-13 at its end… After that, it was all Wildcats as the Wildcat nonstarter played early and often the rest of the game as the Wildcats rolled to a 56-34 win… The Wildcats were led in scoring by Wilson Wages and Tylon Scurry who finished with 11 points each… The GCO were led in scoring by Jay Hunter who had 9 points… The Wildcats are now one of the teams who will play in the championship game tomorrow… Their opponent will be the winner of the Newberry vs Mid-Carolina game tonight.

  • Middle School Basketball: Today starting at 5:00 pm we will be bringing you a semifinal game in the Little River Conference Tournament between the CMS Lady Wildcats and the Lady Panther of HT… The winner of that game will move on to face Mid-Carolina in the finals on Thursday at CMS… Then on Thursday we plan on bringing you the girls and boys championship games from CMS starting at 5:00 pm… The CMS boys will be one of the final 2 teams and will be facing the winner of the Mid-Carolina vs. which takes place tonight.
  • Tuesday, 2-5-19: Laurens Raider varsity teams host the Yellow Jackets of TL Hanna in Region I-AAAAA action…. We will go live a couple of minutes before 6:00 pm.

  • Raider Softball Tryouts… Coach Smith has also announced that the rider softball team will be holding tryouts for the varsity & JV squads January 28th through January 30th… Tryouts will be at the LSHS softball field starting at 4:15 pm each day and again participants must have a current physical before being allowed to tryout… Also be sure to bring appropriate equipment, as in gloves, cleats, etc… If you have questions or for more information call Coach Smith at 864-684-0110.

 

  • Joe Adair Outdoor Education Chicken Stew Fundraiser… The Joe Adair Outdoor Education Center will be having its final chicken stew fundraiser for this school year on February 1st… The cost of the stew will be $8:50 per quart… all monies raised will be used for the maintenance and upkeep of the center… The center is used by students in School Districts 55 & 56 from kindergarten to high school… It is also used by community and civic groups…Stew can be preordered by calling the center at 864-984-5492…. The stew will be available for pickup from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm on February 1st at the center.

 

  • Laurens Area Youth Baseball Registration… Registration is now open for youth baseball through the Laurens Family YMCA and the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department… Ages 3-6 will register at the Laurens YMCS, Ages 7-8 Coaches Pitch as well as 9-10 Minors and 11-12 will register at The Ridge the Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters… Ages 13-15 will register at the Laurens YMCA…The cost is only $60 and that includes uniforms and insurance … Don’t let this pass you by as registration closed Thursday, February 7th.

 

  • Clinton YMCA Youth Baseball, Softball & O-Zone Baseball Registration Open… Registration for all levels of baseball including O-Zone baseball and girls’ softball is now open through Tuesday, 2-12-19… For information such as age levels for each type of baseball and softball, cut off dates for determining age, fall-out dates, cost, financial aid information and who to call if you have more questions, see our posting in the Featured Sports section on the right-lower side of our homepage at

 

  • Hydra Softball Sign Ups… Registration for Hydra Softball will begin February 1st and continue until February 21st for girls ages 6-12 at the Hickory Tavern Park… Registration will be done on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 pm and on Saturdays from 11 am – 2pm… The cost is only $45 per child… If you have questions or want more information contact Nichole Patterson at 864-907-1549 or email her at: m-mscrapmetal-halfdime@outlook.com

 

  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration is now open for youth basketball for ages 3-6… The cost is $40 per child and registration will close 1-6-2019 with the season starting the next day.
