Sports Report for Thursday, 1-31-2019

Local Notes:

CHS:  The JV basketball teams will be hosting the Emerald Vikings today starting at 6:00 pm

 

LDHS:  The Laurens Raider sub-varsity teams will be hosting the Woodmont Wildcats today starting with the JV girls’ game at 5:30.

 

Middle School Basketball:

  • Girls: Hickory Tavern 36 – Clinton 26… Last night at Hickory Tavern, the Lady Panthers punched their ticket to tonight’s finals of the Little River Conference Championship Tournament by taking a hard fought 36-26 win over the Clinton MS Lady Wildcats… The Panthers only led 10-6 at the ends of the first quarter as the Wildcats were hanging tough… However the Wildcats had trouble scoring in the second quarter as the Panthers outscored them 10-3 to carry a 20-9 lead into the locker rooms at the half… The Wildcats came out on the third quarter and outscored the Panthers 9-5 to make it 25-18 going into the final 6 minutes of plat where the Panthers halted the Wildcat momentum and went on to take the win… The Panthers Faith Jackson led all scorers with 23 points… The Wildcats were led by Jordan Hill and Fantasia Walker who both had 8 points… Others scoring for the Panthers were Desiree Jennings with 6 points, MKalie Revis 4 and Destiny Anderson 3… The balance of the Wildcats scoring was done by Mia Barr and Anna Litzenberger who both had 3 points while Naveah Johnson and Asia Barr had 2 points each… The Panthers advance to today’s finals of the Little River Conference Tournament at 5:00 pm at CMS where they will take on the Mid-Carolina Rebels.

 

College Notes: With all the local basketball going on it has been a while since we checked on the men’s and women’s college basketball rankings so let’s correct that now by looking at the AP Polls.

  • Men’s Division I Basketball Rankings…  The top 5 teams this week are Tennessee, Duke, Virginia, Gonzaga and Michigan in that order… Spots 6-10 are occupied by Michigan State, Kentucky, Nevada, North Carolina and Marquette… If you would like to see the balance of the top 25, click here.
  • Women’s Division I Basketball Rankings… In women’s basketball there is a new #1 as Baylor moved into that spot… UConn, Louisville, Oregon and last week’s #1 round out the top 5… The next 5 spots are occupied by Mississippi State, North Carolina State, Stanford, Oregon State and Marquette… South Carolina checked in at 16 this week up 3 spots from last week’s #19… To see the entire top 25 in the women’s AP Poll, click here.

  • Middle School Basketball: Today we plan on bringing you the girls and boys championship games from CMS starting at 5:00 pm… The girls’ game will be first and it will feature the Hickory Tavern Panthers taking on the Mid-Carolina Rebels and after it finishes we will bring you the boys’ championship game featuring the Newberry Tigers taking on the Clinton MS Wildcats…
  • Tuesday, 2-5-19: Laurens Raider varsity teams host the Yellow jackets of TL Hanna in Region I-AAAAA action…. We will go live a couple of minutes before 6:00 pm.

  • Joe Adair Outdoor Education Chicken Stew Fundraiser… The Joe Adair Outdoor Education Center will be having its final chicken stew fundraiser for this school year on February 1st… The cost of the stew will be $8:50 per quart… all monies raised will be used for the maintenance and upkeep of the center… The center is used by students in School Districts 55 & 56 from kindergarten to high school… It is also used by community and civic groups…Stew can be preordered by calling the center at 864-984-5492…. The stew will be available for pickup from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm on February 1st at the center.

 

  • Laurens Area Youth Baseball Registration… Registration is now open for youth baseball through the Laurens Family YMCA and the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department… Ages 3-6 will register at the Laurens YMCS, Ages 7-8 Coaches Pitch as well as 9-10 Minors and 11-12 will register at The Ridge the Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters… Ages 13-15 will register at the Laurens YMCA…The cost is only $60 and that includes uniforms and insurance … Don’t let this pass you by as registration closed Thursday, February 7th.

 

  • Clinton YMCA Youth Baseball, Softball & O-Zone Baseball Registration Open… Registration for all levels of baseball including O-Zone baseball and girls’ softball is now open through Tuesday, 2-12-19… For information such as age levels for each type of baseball and softball, cut off dates for determining age, fall-out dates, cost, financial aid information and who to call if you have more questions, see our posting in the Featured Sports section on the right-lower side of our homepage at

 

  • Hydra Softball Sign Ups… Registration for Hydra Softball will begin February 1st and continue until February 21st for girls ages 6-12 at the Hickory Tavern Park… Registration will be done on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-8 pm and on Saturdays from 11 am – 2pm… The cost is only $45 per child… If you have questions or want more information contact Nichole Patterson at 864-907-1549 or email her at: m-mscrapmetal-halfdime@outlook.com

 

  • Laurens Family YMCA 2018 – 2019 Sports Schedules… The Laurens Family YMCA has released the schedules for signing up for different sports during the 2018-2019 sports seasons… To see the entire list of sports, ages for participation, sign-up dates, cost and when the season begins click here… If you have any other questions call the Y at 984-2626… Registration is now open for youth basketball for ages 3-6… The cost is $40 per child and registration will close 2-6-2019 with the season starting the next day.
