Sports Report for Monday, 2-4-2019

Local Notes:

CHS:  Last Friday night the Red Devil varsity basketball teams traveled to Greenwood to take on the Emerald Vikings in Region III-AAA action.

  • Girls: CHS 62 – EHS 52… In girls’ action, the Red Devils took on the #3 ranked Vikings who before Friday had not suffered a region loss and had defeated the Red Devils 70-29 at Clinton earlier in the season when the Red Devils were fighting injuries… Well the Vikings are not perfect in region play any longer as the “healed” Red Devils took a 62-52 win…  Emerald led 9-6 after one quarter of play but the Red Devils fought back to carry a 29-24 lead into the locker room at the half… Clinton still led 43-41 going into the final 8 minutes of play where they outscored the Vikings 19-11 to take the win… Afterwards an elated Coach John Gardner commented “Total team effort (on) offense and defense. Super proud of this team”… Laura Livingston led the Vikings with 24 points…De’Shanti Watts led the Red Devils with 17 points… Savannah Campbell and Terriauna Bennett were also in double-digits with 12 and 11 points respectively… Taneal Evans scored 9 points, Tinique Austin 7, Payton Price-Walker 4 and Danah Kinard 2… The Lady Red Devils are now 17-4 on the season and 5-4 in region play.

  • Boys: EHS 65 – CHS 59… In boys’ action, the Vikings took a 65-59 win in a game that looked like the real Red Devil team did not show up for in the first half… The score at the half was 34-14 Vikings as the Vikings used a triangle and 2 defense designed to limit Clinton’s two biggest offensive weapons JD Payne and Ahmari Bates as they were limited to just 2 points each in the half… The third quarter was all Clinton as the Red Devils came out pressed the Vikings and scored 21 unanswered points before the Vikings finally scored in the period… When the third quarter ended the Red Devils led 45-41… The two teams played about even the first 4 minutes of the final quarter but the Vikings pulled away in the end especially after JD Payne fouled out to take the win… Ahmari Bates was the Red Devils leading scorer with 18 points… PJ Bluford had 11 points, Konnor Richardson 9, JD Payne 8, Davis Wilson 4, Kimon Quarles 3 and both Elijah Campbell & Sam Tiller finished with 2 points… The Red Devils drop to 7-13 overall and 4-5 in region play… The Red Devil varsity teams will travel to Woodruff for their final games of the regular season while the JV teams will host Woodruff today for their final game of the season.

  • Girls: WHS 54 – LDHS 24… The Lady Wildcats are now ranked #2 in Class AAAAA and they played like it last Friday night as they defeated the Lady Raiders 54-24… The writing was on the wall at the end of the first quarter as the Wildcats led 20-1 and extended that lead to 35-8 at the half as they rolled on to the win… Woodmont’s Xan Roland led all scorers with 17 points… The Raiders were led by Qua Fortson who had 11 points… Lamoria Allen contributed 4 points while Raniya Jackson, Nadia Anderson, MK Moore and Hanna Wiles all scored 2 points each…. Precious Grant rounded out the Raiders scoring with 1 point.

  • Boys: WHS 67 – LDHS 64 in OT… In boys’ action, the Wildcats made it a sweep of the Raiders as they took a 67-65 win but they had to go to overtime to do it… The Raiders had a 24-17 lead at the end of eh first quarter but Wildcats cut the Raider lead to 1 (32-31) going into the locker room at the half… Both teams battled toe to toe as the score was tied 41-41 at the end of the third quarter and 58-58 at the end of the fourth… In the overtime Woodmont hit enough free throws to win the game while Laurens only managed 6 points and no shots from the free throw line… Christian Anderson led the Raiders with a game-high 29 points 13 of them in the fourth quarter… Dee Foster was also in double-digits with 17 points… Dra Copeland finished with 6 points, Leonard Williams 5, Jordan Woodruff 3 and both J’Von Harris & Josh Ricks had 2 each… The Raiders fall to 10-13 on the season and 5-7 region play… The Raiders will host TL Hanna tomorrow night on Senior Night while the sub-varsity teams travel to TL Hanna tonight.
