Sports Report for Wednesday, 2-6-2019

Local Notes:

CHS:  The Red Devils closed out their regular season last night on the road traveling up to Woodruff to take on the Wolverines with playoff spots on the line.

  • Girls: WHS 55 – CHS 39… If the Lady Red Devils won last night they could have finished as high as second in the region but alas that did not happen as Woodruff took a 53-39 win… The Red Devils started slow and trailed 13-6 at the end of the first quarter and 24-16 at the half… Clinton managed to cut the Woodruff lead to 35-30 going into the fourth quarter but there Woodruff outscored Clinton 20-9 to take the 55-39 win… Woodruff’s Zay Jeter led all scorers with 24 points… De’Shanti Watts led the Red Devils in scoring with 13 points… Savannah Campbell and Terriauna Bennett both finished with 11 points for Clinton… Adaija Darby finished with 3 points and Tinique Austin 1… The Lady Red Devils finish the regular season 17-5 overall and 5-5 in region play… They finished fourth in the region and will be on the road next Monday starting playoff action at Southside HS.

  • Boys: CHS 67 – WHS 57… Now the news is better where the boys’ team is concerned as the Red Devils took a 67-57 win over the Wolverines… Clinton outscored Woodruff 24-12 in the second quarter to carry a 39-24 halftime break… The Wolverines did cut the Clinton lead to 49-39 going into the fourth quarter of play but the Red Devils would not let them get any closer… The Red Devils were led by Ahmari Bates who had a game-high 24 points and JD Payne who finished with 20… PJ Bluford contributed 9 points, Sam Tiller & Konnor Richardson 4 each and Davis Wilson and Qua Quarles both finished with 3 points each… The Red Devils finish the regular season 8-13 overall and 5-5 in region play… Now like the girls’ team they also finished fourth in the region and will start the playoffs next Tuesday as they travel to Chapman to take on the Panthers…. Congratulations to both Red Devil teams for making the playoffs! Go Big Red!

LDHS:  The Raiders hosted the TL Hanna Yellow Jackets in their final home games of the season on Senior Night.

  • Girls: TLH 56 – LDHS 37… The Lady Raiders found themselves simply outmatched last night as TL Hanna rolled to a 56-37 win… Hanna rolled to a 22-12 lead at the half and then outscored the Raiders 16-5 in the third quarter and never looked back though the Raiders never stopped battling… Maleia Bracone led Hanna with 21 points… The Raiders were led on the scoreboard by Kenaja Burnside and Qua Fortson who both scored 10 points… Raniya Jackson & Nadia Anderson both chipped in 4 points each while Lamoria Allen finished with 3 and Precious Grant 1… The Raiders fall to 6-17 overall and 2-11 on region action.

  • Boys: TLH 58 – LDHS 54… It seems the Raider boys’ team has had a lot of close losses this season and that was the case again last night as they fell to Hanna 58-54 in a comeback effort that fell short… Hanna took the lead early though Laurens did manage to tie the game 17-17 midway through the second quarter before Hanna pulled out to a 29-19 lead at the half… The Yellow Jackets led 41-23 going into the final 8 minutes of play which saw the Raiders mount a comeback but Hanna made their free throws down the stretch and clock just ran out on the Raiders… Dee Foster had a game-high 27 points to lead the Raiders and Dra Copeland was also in double-digits with 12 points… J’Von Harris chipped In 8 and Christian Anderson 7… The Raider record for the season now stands at 10-14 overall and 5-8 in region play… The Raiders will be on the road Friday as they finish their regular season and if the boys want to make the playoffs they must defeat the Eagles.

Laurens Academy: The Crusader boys’ varsity basketball team started their participation in the region tournament last night down at Newberry Academy taking on the Palmetto Christian Lions hoping to punch their ticket to the semi-finals on Friday night…

  • LA 61 – PC 22… The Crusaders did indeed punch their ticket to the semis Friday night as they rolled to a 61-22 win… It was a slow start for both team as the Crusaders only led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter but they stretched that lead to 38-12 going to the locker rooms at the half… The Crusaders held the Lions scoreless in the third quarter and cruised to the win… Noah Moore led the Crusaders with 21 points… Dawson Foster and Diamonte Grant were also in double-digits with 14 and 10 points respectively… Other scoring for the Crusades were Thomas Lowy with 5 points, Cal Robertson & Aidan McCall 3 each, Luke Kerber & Jared Jin 2 each and Charlton McCall rounded out the Crusader with 1 point… Both Crusader teams will be in action this Friday night at Greenwood Christian Academy in semi-final games… I’ll have more about that later in the week.
