Sports Report for Monday, 2-11-2019

Local Notes:


  • Lady Red Devils Start Playoffs Tonight… The Lady Red Devils will start their participation in the SCHSL Class AAA Basketball Playoffs tonight… The will travel up to Greenville to take on the Southside Tigers… The Tigers enter tonight’s contest 10-10 on the season and finished first in Region II with a 7-1 region record… All the other region members have losing season records… They are averaging 44.9 points per game on offense and giving 46.3 points per game… In the most recent SCBCA Media Poll they are ranked #7 in Class AAA girls… Of Course the Lady Red devils finished their season with a 17-5 record overall and 5-5 in Region II play which placed them fourth in a very tough region… They are averaging 48.4 points per game while giving up 40.1… Fir those of you who are planning on going the address for Southside HS is 6630 Frontage @White Horse Rd., Greenville, S.C. 29605… Good Luck to the Red Devils and Go Big Red!


 LDHS:  The Laurens Raider varsity basketball teams played their final games of the regular season Friday night down at Greenwood HS taking on the Eagles.

  • Boys: Greenwood 78 – Laurens 70… In boys’ action, the Eagles were looking to avenge a 61-60 loss at Laurens and the Raiders were looking to secure a spot in the playoffs with a win and only one team would meet its goal… That team was the Eagles as they took a 78-70 win over the Raiders… The Eagles led 19-10 after one quarter of play and 42-31 at the half… They stretched that lead to 16 (54-38) just before the end of the third quarter and led 58-45 going into the final quarter… As Coach Ryan Walker said afterwards “We just could not hit our shots in the first half”… In the fourth quarter the Raiders di start making a few more shots and cut into the Eagle lead… With 3:14 left in the game the Raiders had the Eagle lead down to 4 points (65-61) but the Eagles responded with a three-point shot and then hit free throws down the stretch to take the win… The Eagle win coupled with JL Mann defeating Wade Hampton left the Raiders out of the playoffs… Leonard Williams led the Raiders in scoring with 22 points… Dee Foster had 15 points and Christian Anderson 13 to give the Raiders 3 players in double-digits… Shamare Dendy finished with 8 points, Dra Copeland 6 while Jordan Woodruff, J’Von Harris and Josh Ricks all finished with 2 points each… After the game Coach Walker expressed gratitude for the effort the team put forth through the season especially the seniors… He also thinks the corner has been turned for the program and the “ship righted”… The Raiders finish the season 10-16 overall and 5-9 in region play.


  • Girls: Greenwood 50 – Laurens 35…  In girls’ action the Eagles took a 50-35 win over the Raiders… The Raiders actually led 20-19 at the half but the Eagles came out hot in the third quarter and the Raiders did not as they outscored the Raiders 17-6 in the quarter and then went on to the win… Ashanti Conway led the Raiders with 9 points… Qua Fortson finished with 8 points, Kenaja Burnside 7, MK Moore 6, Nadia Anderson 3, and Raniya Jackson 2… The Lady Raiders finish their season with a 6-18 overall record and 2-12 in region play.


 Laurens Academy:

Fri. 2/8 @ Greenwood Christian – Semi-finals of Region Tournament

  • Girls: LA 39 – WW King 11… In the girls’ semifinal game, the Crusaders cruised to a 39-11 win… The game was only 6-2 Crusaders after the first 8 minutes of play but in the second quarter the Crusaders struck for 17 points while allowing the Knights only 5 to take a 23-7 lead at the half and were never really threatened after that… The Crusaders were as usual led by Ruthie Moore who had 16 points to lead all scorers and saw limited time in the second half… Jennifer Wu finished with 7 points, Regan Williamson 6, Blair Quarles & Florence Mitchell 4 while Emily Abercrombie rounded out the Crusader scoring with 2 points.


  • Boys: LA 48 Anderson Christian 40… Now the news is also good where the boys are concerned on Friday night as the Crusaders defeated the Lions of Anderson Christian School 48-40 but they had to go to overtime to do it… The Crusaders trailed to Lions 21-13 at the half but the Crusaders came out in the third quarter and outscored the Lions 11-2 to take a 24-23 lead going into the fourth quarter… In the final quarter the teams played almost to a draw but the Lions did outscore the Crusaders by 1 point to tie the game 36-36 and send it into overtime… In overtime the Lions made only 2 of the 12 shots they attempted (4 points) while the Crusaders made 8 of 9 shots attempted (including going 5 for 6 from the free throw line to score 12 points and take the win… Noah Moore finished with 18 points for the Crusaders and Dawson Foster 14… Charlton McCall chipped in 8 points, Diamonte Grant 6 and Thomas Lowry 2.


Sat. 2/9 @ Greenwood Christian – Championship Finals

  • Girls: LA 48 – Newberry 34… On Saturday night the Lady Crusaders took the court against the Lady Eagles of Newberry Academy playing for the SCISA Region 1-A Championship… The Crusaders came out and scored 10 or more points in every quarter while holding the Eagles to 8 points or less in every quarter except the last as they rolled to a 48-34 win and the championship… Ruthie Moore and Jennifer Wu led the Crusaders with 16 points each… Blair Quarles finished with 6 points while both Regan Williamson and Florence Mitchell finished with 5 points each.


  • Boys: LA 59 – Richard Winn 56… Now there is also great news for Crusader fans where the boys are concerned as they captured the region championship by defeating the Richard Winn Eagles 59-56 surviving a comeback scare by the Eagles… The Crusaders led 49-37 going into the fourth quarter where the Eagles outscored the Crusaders 19-10 making the game close at the end… The Crusaders were led by Dawson Foster’s game-high 20 points…Noah Moore finished with 15 points and Diamante Grant 12 to give the Crusaders 3 players in double digits… Charlton McCall scored 7 points and Thomas Lowry 5…  Congratulations to both teams and check back tomorrow where I will have photos and post season honors for the Crusaders.
