Sports Report for Tuesday, 2-12-2019

Local Notes:

  • Girls: Southside 40 – Clinton 33… The Lady Red Devil basketball team opened their participation in the SCHSL Class-AAA playoffs on the road last night as they traveled to Greenville to take on the #7 ranked Southside Tigers… Now I hate to have to report that the Tigers took a 40-33 win over the Red Devils as a major comeback by the Red Devils fell short… The Tigers used a press in the first half that the Red Devils had trouble handling and the Red Devils turned the ball over more than twice the number of times as the Tigers and more often than not the Tigers turned those turnovers into points…The Tigers also controlled the boards in the first half and Clinton just could not get the shots to fall…  Going into the locker room at the half the Tigers led 30-9… The third quarter saw the tide turn as the Red Devils came out and pressed the Tigers forcing them to turn the ball over and the Red Devils also handled the Tiger press much better… By the time the third quarter was over, the Red Devils only trailed 34-22… The Red Devils continued to try to comeback in the fourth quarter outscoring the Tigers 11-6 but just could not get any closer though they never stopped trying… The Red Devils were led in scoring by De’Shanti Watts who was the Red Devil in double-digits with 11 points… Savannah Campbell finished with 8 points, while Payton Price-Walker and Terriauna Bennett both scored 6 points…  Taneal Evans rounded out the Red Devil scoring with 2 points… Despite injuries during the region schedule, the Red Devils end their season with a very respectable 17-6 season record…. Congratulations to Coach Gardner and the team on a fine season!

  • Red Devil Boys Open Playoff Action Tonight… The Red Devil boys’ basketball team will open up their run in the playoff as thy travel to Chapman to take on the Panthers… The Panthers finished first in Region II-AAA with an overall record of 15-10 and 5-3 in region play… The Panthers and the Red Devils got together ion the court back in late November at Chapman and the Panthers won that game 79-73 coming back after Clinton led early… The Panthers have lost to Clinton’s region foes Newberry twice, Union twice and split a pair of games with Woodruff… They are averaging 69 points per game while giving up 66 points per game… Of course the Red Devils come into the game with an 8-13 overall record and 5-5 in region play which means they finished 4th in Region II-AAA… They are averaging 59 points per game while giving up 64 points per game…. Good Luck to the Red Devils and Go Big Red!
