Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Seneca 55 – Clinton 54… Last Friday night the Red Devil boys’ basketball season come to an end with a tough 55-54 loss to the Seneca Bobcats up in Seneca… Just like at Chapman on Tuesday night, the game was close throughout as neither team had more than a 5 point lead at any time and there were numerous lead changes in the game… Clinton led 17-16 after 8 minutes of play and trailed 28-25 at the half… Clinton closed that gap to trail by a point (43-42) heading into the final 8 minutes of play… Clinton tied the game (48-48) with 4:30 left to play only to have the Bobcats come back and take the lead… Clinton responded as they came back to take a 1 point lead 51-50 with 2:07 left to play only to have Seneca tie it again (51-51) with 1:44 to play… Clinton took the lead for the last time (54-51) on a 3-point goal by JD Payne… Then in the last 1:09 of the game the Bobcats made 4 big free throws while the Red Devils missed 2 and that proved to be the difference in the game… Clinton had the ball out of bounds under their own basket with 8.4 seconds left in the game and got the ball inbounds to an open Sam Tiller who just missed the shot and the rebound came out long to Ahmari bates who got a shot off that that fell short as Seneca then secured the loose ball and the 55-54 win… Payne led all scorers with 23 points and Ahmari Bates was also in double digits with 16 points… Sam Tiller finished with 5 points, Kimon Quarles 4 while Konnor Richardson, PJ Bluford and Qua Quarles all finished with 2 points each… The Red Devils finish their season with a 9-14 record which considering they were 0-4 at the start of the season and at one point were 3-11 this represents a great turnaround by the team and Coach Romines… After the game he commented on how proud of the team he was because of this turnaround and made the playoffs for the third straight year… He also commented on how blessed he felt that God had given him the opportunity to coach basketball at CHS…

Laurens Academy: The Laurens Academy Crusaders opened up their participation in the SCISA Class A basketball playoffs so let’s check up on how they did.

  • Girls: LA 60 – Clarendon Hall 9… The Lady Crusaders started things off Friday night as they took to the court against the Clarendon hall Saints down at Heathwood Hall in Columbia… The Saints came into the contest with a 4-17 season record and I hate to have to say this but probably the only chance the Saints had to win is if the Crusaders did not show up but they did as the Crusaders rolled to a 60-9 win… The Saints were held scoreless in the third quarter and the most they scored in a quarter was 5 which came in the fourth quarter when the Crusader starters were for the most part on the bench… Ruthie Moore led all scorers with 22 points… Jennifer Wu was also in double-digits with 12 points and Blair Quarles 10… Regan Williamson scored 5 points, Payton Breen 4 while Florence Mitchell, Morgan Marlett and Hannah Stribling all finished with 2 points each… Rounding out the Crusader scoring was Emily Abercrombie with 1 point… The Crusaders will travel to Wilson Hall in Sumter today for a 5:30 game with Patrick Henry in a rematch of last year’s state championship game… Go Crusaders!

  • Boys: Dorchester Academy 49 – LA 47… Now the boys did not get into action until noon on Saturday and I am afraid the news is not as good as it was for the girls as the Dorchester Academy Raiders took a come from behind 49-47 win over the Crusaders… The Crusaders trailed 14-13 at the end of the first quarter but rallied to take a 31-27 lead into the locker room at the half… The Raiders cut into the Crusader lead in the third quarter so that when it ended the Crusaders only led by 1, 41-40… As Coach Plowden commented afterwards the Crusaders had too many turnovers in the last 8 minutes of play and found themselves down by 5 with about 2 minutes to go… The Crusaders got the Raiders lead down to 2 (49-47) and had the ball on an inbounds play with about 4 seconds left to play that went to Noah Moore who just missed the shot… However Charlton McCall got the offensive rebound but missed the put-back which Diamonte Grant rebounded and also missed put-back as the horn sounded… Noah Moore finished with a game-high 17 points… Diamante Grant was also in double digits with 10 points… Charlton McCall finished with 9 points, Dawson Foster 7 and Thomas Lowry 4
