Sports Report for Tuesday, 2-19-2019

PC Notes:

  • WBK: High Point 70 – PC 63…  In the first game of a doubleheader of basketball last Saturday at the Templeton Center, the Lady Blue Hose basketball team fell to the High Point Panthers 70-63… PC trailed 35-16 at the half as the Blue Hose were only able to score 4 points in the second quarter… They did outscore the Panthers 12 points in the second half but just could not climb out of the hole that the poor second quarter caused… Trinity Johnson had a career-high 19 points to lead the Blue Hose in scoring… For more information on this game, click here… PC drops to 4-20 overall and 2-11 in the Big South, while High Point moves to 17-7, 10-3… The Blue Hose are in action at USC Upstate tonight with tip-off slated for 6 p.m., and broadcast live on ESPN+.


  • MBK: PC 76 – Campbell 71… Now in the second half of the doubleheader last Saturday the news is better as the PC men’s basketball team took a 76-71 win over the Campbell Camels… Campbell was down as much as 11 points in the second half and rallied to tie 71-71 the game with 1:30 left in the game but PC made free throws down the stretch to take the win… Davon Bolt led the Blue Hose in scoring with 20 points 13 of which came off free throws…. For more information about this game, click here… PC improves to 16-12 overall and 8-5 in the Big South, while Campbell moves to 15-11, 8-4… The Blue Hose will not see action again until this Saturday at UNC Asheville against the Bulldogs… PC defeated the Bulldogs 67-44 back on 2-7-19 at the Templeton Center… The tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. and it will be broadcast live on ESPN+.

Payne Named to Class-AAA All-State Team… Late last week the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association announced its all-state teams for each of the SCHSL classes as well as players of the year fir for each class… Good news for Red Devil fans as JD Payne was named to the all-state team for Class-AAA…. JD averaged 20.3 points per game, 8.5 rebounds per game, 3.1 assist per game and 2 steals per game while helping the Red Devils turn their season around and make it to the second round of the playoffs… Congratulations to JD!

 Laurens Academy:

  • Girls: LA 62 – PHA 21… Yesterday afternoon the Lady Crusader basketball team traveled down to Wilson Hall Academy in Sumter in a quarter-finals game in the SCISA Class-A Basketball Tournament with the Patrick Henry Academy Patriots… As you may recall the same two teams met in the finals last year with the Crusaders taking a 48-36 win to claim the title… Well there is good news for Crusader fans today as the Crusaders rolled to a 62-21 win over the Patriots… Neither team showed a lot of offense in the first quarter as the Crusaders only led 9-5 at its end… However in the second quarter, the Crusaders began to assert themselves as they outscored the Patriots 20-9 to take a 29-14 lead into the locker room at the half… The second half was more of the same as the Crusaders outscored the Patriots in the final 16 minutes of play 33-7 to take the win… Ruthie Moore led all scorers with 21 points and Regan Williamson was also in double-digits with 17 points… Blair Quarles and Jennifer Wu both finished with 8 points each, Payton Breen 4 and rounding out the scoring for the Crusaders were Florence Mitchell and Hannah Stribling with 2 points each… The Crusaders will be back in action in the semi-finals on Thursday at 6:00 pm as they again travel to Wilson Hall to play the Cathedral Academy Generals who defeated Curtis Baptist 45-34 last night.



Pontoon Advances to State Tournament… This past weekend the Laurens Raiders hosted the Class-AAAAA Upper State Qualifying Tournament… While many of the Raiders won more matches than they lost only one qualified to go to the State Championship Tournament this weekend in Anderson and that was Will Pontoon who finished third in the 220-pound class… The Raider senior lost only to Woodmont’s Joseph Fernicola who finishes first… Now if you would like to see more about how the Raider wrestlers did this weekend, click here… Congratulations to all the Raider wrestlers especially to Will!
